Llano Estacado Audubon Society Welcome to the Llano Estacado Audubon Society (LEAS) web site.
We are a chapter of the National Audubon Society
located in the South Plains of west Texas.
The Llano Estacado Audubon Society’s mission is to conserve and restore natural ecosystems –
focusing on birds, other wildlife and habitat –
for the benefit of human heritage and the earth’s biological diversity. LEAS, centered in Lubbock, has a very well-kept birding secret: we have 296 regularly-occurring (non-accidental/hypothetical) species in our territory! Adding accidental and hypothetical birds brings our species tally to 432. To put this in context, the bird list for the entire state of Texas is 621. Positioned within the Central Flyway and encompassing diverse habitats (including canyons, farmlands, grasslands, thousands of playa wetlands, rangelands, reservoirs, riparian areas, saline lakes, and urban areas), the LEAS territory is vital for birds, especially neotropical migrants and wetland birds. Llano Estacado translates to "Staked Plains," a name given by the Spanish explorer Francisco Vasquez de Coronado in 1540. PRAIRIE DOG Management

Birding in Paradise - St. John, US Virgin Islands
My family and I have just returned from a vacation in St. John. This island is located in the Caribbean between Puerto Rico and Anegada. Over half of the island is an United States National Park. Of volcanic origin, the island is very mountainous. Since we visited towards the end of the dry season, many places on the island were brown and dormant. Beginning with the May rains, the trees and flowers (including native orchids) will burst into color and life once again. An online bookstore, The Adventurous Traveler Bookstore has a map of the National Park Over 160 species of birds are listed on the Birds of St. John USVI National Park Checklist

THE ECONOMICS OF BIRDING
Birders who travel to see birds are a significant economic asset to those communities that live close to good bird habitats. There are now good statistics that summarize the economic importance to specific sites of traveling birders. The American Birding Association has compiled these figures and we have posted the statistics on this site. Traveling birders spend considerable amounts of money on food, drink, lodging, gasoline and other local services. The use of important wildlife sites for commercial development may not be the most beneficial use of the land for the local community, but unless the true economic value of a wildlife site is known, local communities supportive of wildlife conservation are unable to argue their case. The American Birding Association is working on a project to ensure that communities have the tools to assess the economic value of their wildlife sites. To start with we have posted some very useful

Namibia Birding - Trek into Africa
From desert dunes to flamingos in the ocean, Namibia is an interesting and unusual country in which to bird, an example of unspoilt nature. It is an country of extremes, from the largest national park in the world to some of the tallest sand dunes, from penguins to flamingos. Created in 1990 after a brutal war with South Africa, Namibia is the first country in the world to include within its constitution the protection of the environment and sustainable utilization of wildlife. As evidence of this unique conservation, about 15% of the democratic country is national parks. Namibia is on the western coast of Africa and borders Angola on the north, Zambia to the west, Botswana to the southwest, and South Africa to the south. January is an excellent time to visit Namibia: being in the southern hemisphere, this is the summer season.

IN OHIO
Excerpts from
BIRDING IN OHIO
(SECOND EDITION)
Published by Indiana University Press,
601 North Morton Street, Bloomington, IN 47404
The following site descriptions and instructions on how to get to the variously described locations are excerpted from the second edition of Birding In Ohio.
Part I directs the birder to to sites in the northern tier of counties, where in many cases birding is influenced by Lake Erie. Part II investigates the west-central counties, and Part III explores the birding possibilities of the unglaciated Allegheny Plateau counties of southern and eastern Ohio.
A number of regional editors provided invaluable data regarding many of the sites and directions on how to get to them. Thanks are especially due to John Schrader, Tom Kemp, Pete and Bill Whan, Bruce Stehling, Gildo Tori, John Pogacnik, Lynn Barnhart, Charles Bombaci, Elsie and Harry Knighton, Marcella and Howard Meahl, Tod Dawson, Ned Keller, Jay Stenger, and Glen Kitson.
Birding sites can sometimes become altered drastically over a few years, just as the ways of getting to them can change. If you are aware of changes that would make these accounts more informative, please don't hyperventilate and throw an adolescent fit, or mean-heartedly and stupidly condemn this entire project. Instead, calmly and in good humor, e-mail your information to: 73174.1766@compuserve.com
