The Llano Estacado Audubon Society’s mission is to conserve and restore natural ecosystems – focusing on birds, other wildlife and habitat – for the benefit of human heritage and the earth’s biological diversity. There are now good statistics that summarize the economic importance to specific sites of traveling birders. The American Birding Association has compiled these figures and we have posted the statistics on this site. Traveling birders spend considerable amounts of money on food, drink, lodging, gasoline and other local services. The use of important wildlife sites for commercial development may not be the most beneficial use of the land for the local community, but unless the true economic value of a wildlife site is known, local communities supportive of wildlife conservation are unable to argue their case. Part I directs the birder to to sites in the northern tier of counties, where in many cases birding is influenced by Lake Erie. Part II investigates the west-central counties, and Part III explores the birding possibilities of the unglaciated Allegheny Plateau counties of southern and eastern Ohio.
