New Jersey Laws Species There is not one endangered species list, there are many. Growing concern for the world's vanishing species has led to increased conservation action. The governments of many nations have passed protective laws and put aside national parks and other reserves for wildlife. Different governments, associations and international agencies keep different lists . A species can be considered endangered on one list, threatened on another list and not appear at all on a different list. In addition to these Internet resources the Morris County Library has many books and current magazines with detailed species information. Contact the reference department for help.

Massachusetts List of Endangered, Threatened and Special Concern Species Definitions "Endangered" (E) species are native species which are in danger of extinction throughout all or part of their range, or which are in danger of extirpation from Massachusetts, as documented by biological research and inventory. "Threatened" (T) species are native species which are likely to become endangered in the forseeable future, or which are declining or rare as determined by biological research and inventory. "Special concern" (SC) species are native species which have been documented by biological research or inventory to have suffered a decline that could threaten the species if allowed to continue unchecked, or which occur in such small numbers or with such restricted distribution or specialized habitat requirements that they could easily become threatened within Massachusetts. Any native species listed as endangered or threatened by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is also included on the state list. The rules and regulations and precise definitions relative to the establishment of the Commonwealth's list of endangered, threatened, and special concern species are set forth in 321 CMR 10.00 et seq. Species in BOLD TYPE may occur in Massachusetts wetlands. 1. Introduction - The list in 321 CMR 10.60 contains the names of all species of plants and animals which have been determined to be Endangered, Threatened, or of Special Concern pursuant to M.G.L. c. 131A and 321 CMR 10.03.

Threatened and endangered species
There are currently 9702 known species of birds living on Earth. Today the survival of many of these species is threatened for a variety of reasons, mostly man-made. Over the 530 million years of life on Earth, there have been five major extinctions of species, the last of which saw the demise of the dinosaurs 65 million years ago. Each of these were caused by a biological or physical change of global proportions. Currently, we are in the early stages of the sixth mass extinction. This time it is caused by the relentless and unchecked actions and expansion of mankind. According to some estimates, the current extinction rates already parallel those recorded during the dinosaur extinction. Birds vary naturally in their numbers depending on where they live and how high up the food chain they are. The probability of a bird going extinct by chance depends on its population size and range, with the average natural lifespan of a species being 4 million years. The most numerous bird in the world is the red-billed quelea, which numbers 1,500 million individuals and is found over extensive tracts of Africa. Species like this are very secure. At the other extreme are birds endemic to islands, where the whole population of perhaps a few hundred is restricted to one or two islands only. Such species are very vulnerable to any changes in their environment, and hence to sudden extinctions.

Piping Plover
The piping plover in the Great Lakes area is an endangered species. Endangered species are animals and plants that are in danger of becoming extinct. The Northern Great Plains and Atlantic Coast piping plovers are threatened species. Threatened species are animals and plants that are likely to become endangered in the foreseeable future. Identifying, protecting, and restoring endangered and threatened species is the primary objective of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife ServiceĆ¾s endangered species program. The Great Lakes population of the piping plover is at a perilously low level. Since 1983, the number of nesting pairs has ranged from 12 to 19. All of the Great Lakes pairs nest in Michigan.
What is the Piping Plover?
Scientific Name
Charadrius melodus
Appearance
These small, stocky shorebirds have a sand-colored upper body, a white underside, and orange legs. During the breeding season, adults have a black forehead, a black breast band, and an orange bill.
Habitat
Piping plovers use wide, flat, open, sandy beaches with very little grass or other vegetation. Nesting territories often include small creeks or wetlands.

Big Bend National Park is a diverse area containing over 1,200 species of plants, 11 species of amphibians, 56 species of reptiles, 40 species of fish, 76 species of mammals, 450 species of birds and about 3,600 species of insects. The park boasts more types of birds, bats, and cacti than any other national park in the United States. Within Big Bend National Park, seven species are officially considered federally threatened or endangered. The Big Bend mosquito fish, Gambusia gaigei , is an endemic species. The only place in the world it is found is a few ponds near the Rio Grande Village. This tiny endangered fish is at risk from exotic species competition and diminishing habitat. Although never abundant, the Big Bend gambusia population is now considered stable. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service moved some of the Gambusia gaigei to a fish hatchery in Dexter, New Mexico, in the event that something should happen to the population in Big Bend National Park and a source to restock the park became necessary. Two endangered birds are found in Big Bend. Both are considered stable populations. The black-capped vireo

THREATS TO THE RECOVERY OF RARE, THREATENED, AND ENDANGERED BIRDS: STELLER'S EIDER ROBERT SUYDAM DEPT. OF WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT NORTH SLOPE BOROUGH BARROW, AK Steller's eiders were proposed for listing as a threatened species at the same time spectacled eiders were listed under the Endangered Species Act. The listing of Steller's eiders was deferred because of other listing priorities by the USFWS. The Steller's eider may be listed in the near future, perhaps sometime this summer. One reason for the proposal to list Steller's eiders was because they disappeared from the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta as a breeding birdan area where they were once described as a common nester. Currently, the only known location in North America where Steller's eiders still nest in any numbers is in the vicinity of Barrow. Very little is known about the basic biology of Steller's eiders. Thus, the USFWS Northern Alaska Ecological Services Office and the North Slope Borough have been studying the nesting biology of Steller's eiders near Barrow. Steller's eiders do not nest every year at Barrow although they are present. There appears to be a link between the abundance of lemmings and breeding of Steller's eiders. There are several possible reasons: (1) high numbers of lemmings attract nesting snowy owls and jaegers and these birds provide protection to Steller's eiders because they protect their own nests from terrestrial predators such as foxes, (2) the abundance of lemmings provides a vast food base for predators thus reducing the predation pressure on Steller's eiders. Regardless of the reason, Steller's eiders do not nest every year. Therefore relying on aerial surveys to document the presence of nesting Steller's eiders within the NPR-A planning area may not be completely reliable.
