Minnesota's list of endangered, threatened and special concern species
Definitions
A species is considered endangered if the species is threatened with extinction throughout all or a significant portion of its range within Minnesota. A species is considered threatened if the species is likely to become endangered within the foreseeable future throughout all or a significant portion of its range within Minnesota. A species is considered a species of special concern if, although the species is not endangered or threatened, it is extremely uncommon in Minnesota, or has unique or highly specific habitat requirements and deserves careful monitoring of its status. Species on the periphery of their range that are not listed as threatened may be included in this category along with those species that were once threatened or endangered but now have increasing or protected, stable populations.
Minnesota's endangered species law
Minnesota's Endangered Species Statute (Minnesota Statutes, Section 84.0895) requires the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) to adopt rules designating species meeting the statutory definitions of endangered, threatened, or species of special concern. The resulting List of Endangered, Threatened, and Special Concern Species is codified as Minnesota Rules, Chapter 6134. The Endangered Species Statute also authorizes the DNR to adopt rules that regulate treatment of species designated as endangered and threatened. These regulations are codified as Minnesota Rules, Parts 6212.1800 to 6212.2300.

A. Endangered and threatened species and populations.
    1. Diurnal bird of prey species have become endangered or threatened due to poaching, pollution, and habitat destruction. 2. As of August 1994, 18 species of diurnal birds of prey are considered endangered or threatened by the United States Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS). An endangered species is any species of animal or plant that is in danger of extinction throughout all or a significant portion of its range. A threatened species is a species likely to become endangered in the foreseeable future. Following are a few of the federally listed species:
      a. Southern bald eagle populations declined dramatically in the 1940s and 1950s due to the heavy use of organochlorine pesticides, such as DDT. In 1974, only 700 breeding pairs existed in the contiguous 48 states (Johnsgard, 1990). The bald eagle began a slow recovery following the ban of DDT in 1972, dieldrin in 1974, and endrin in 1984. At the same time, federal laws were enacted to prevent poaching and disturbance of nest sites. Today, there are about 4,500 pairs of breeding bald eagles in the lower 48 states. The USFWS has proposed a change in their status from endangered to threatened in all but three of the 48 states. b. Peregrine falcons met a fate similar to the bald eagle's, but their population decline due to pesticides was even more dramatic. By 1975, there were no peregrines breeding in the eastern U.S. and only 39 known breeding pairs in the western U.S. Pesticide bans, regulations, and intensive captive breeding and release programs have resulted in the peregrine's comeback. In 1994, approximately 1,000 breeding pairs were recorded in the lower 48 states (The Peregrine Fund, 1994). The American peregrine falcon

Whooping Crane*
Grus americana Endangered
Florida
*Extirpated from the wild in Florida.
Current Status:
The principal threat to whooping cranes in the wild continues to be the potential of a hurricane or contaminant spill destroying their wintering habitat on the Texas coast. Principal threats to captive birds are disease and parasites.
Achievements:
The whooping crane has responded favorably to management in several locations throughout its range. Its population continues to increase and is now estimated at 237 birds, including 93 in captivity. This success is due, in part, to increased production of young birds at the Fish and Wildlife Service's Patuxent Wildlife Research Center (Patuxent) in Laurel, Maryland. Patuxent currently has a whooping crane population of 49, including 13 young. Captive production in 1992 was approximately double that of 1991, and included five captive-produced birds resulting from natural breeding. Seven chicks were raised at Patuxent from eggs removed from wild nests in Canada. The Fish and Wildlife Service has proposed to reintroduce the whooping crane in Florida in 1993 as part of a program to establish a nonmigratory population in the southeast. Cranes are being reared in captive facilities at Patuxent and the International Crane Foundation in Baraboo, Wisconsin, and conditioned for release to the wild. Additionally, young birds have been sent to the Calgary Zoo to stock the Canadian Wildlife Service's new captive whooping crane facility.

Feed the birds AND let your cat outdoors. The CatStop is a unique product that stops cats from catching wild birds. Invented by a bird feeding, cat lover. It protects wild birds whenever your cat is outdoors.
The peregrine falcon population has dropped dramatically worldwide since the 1940's. Why
the decline ?
There are a number of reasons.
Absorbing DDT which their prey had ingested -causing the production of eggs with thin shells.
Less and less prey because of declining habitats.
Wrongly thinking that falcons kill their poultry or were competing with them, farmers and hunters shoot them during migration.
Illegal taking of young by would-be falconers.
More information from the Peregrine Fund See also Extinct Birds The California gnatcatcher is a year-round resident which primarily inhabits coastal sage scrub.Population declines were due to urban and agricultural development. It was listed as Federally Threatened in 1993 and is a State Species of Special Concern. The species was driving force for the development of the Natural Communities Conservation Program (NCCP) in southern California. There is a dense population known in scrub surrounding Sweetwater Reservoir and limited occurrence around Loveland Reservoir. Recently, US Fish and Wildlife Service proposed "critical habitat" for the species. "Critical habitat" is defined as the specific area occupied by a species that contain physical or biological features essential to the conservation of the species and that may require special management considerations or protection.

To view PDF files. Endangered and Threatened Species Hawaiian Species Pacific Species Critical Habitat Updates The Endangered Species Program conserves endangered and threatened species and the ecosystems upon which they depend. Conserving endangered and threatened species is necessary to preserve our natural heritage for future generations and to maintain our quality of life. Conserving ecosystems benefits all users of ecosystem resources and is essential to maintaining our nation's long term economic prosperity. A species can be listed under one of two categories, endangered or threatened, depending on its status and the degree of threat it faces. Endangered Species are plants and animals that are in immediate danger of becoming extinct and need protection to survive. Threatened Species are those that are declining in numbers and might become endangered if conservation efforts are not immediately taken.
As you browse through the endangered species section, you will learn that island ecosystems are very fragile and that island species depend on one another for survival. It will also become apparent that the major causes for the decline of some species are due to urban development, which takes over the limited habitat of native plants and animals, and the introduction of alien species, which compete for food and habitat and sometimes become predators of native species.

$19.95, paperback Endangered and Threatened Animals of Texas
Their Life History and Management By Linda Campbell Texas possesses an incredibly rich and diverse natural heritage. Its natural assets include 181 species of mammals, 247 species of freshwater fish, and 576 species of birds, living in mountains, deserts, forests, prairies, wetlands, and coastal beaches. While state and federal agencies can provide technical guidance in managing these natural resources, the survival of ecosystems and species will depend on informed Texans who care about and want to help protect the unique natural diversity found only in Texas. This book describes all the mammals, birds, reptiles, fish, amphibians, and invertebrates in Texas that are listed as endangered or threatened by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Following a description of each animal and its habitat and life history, the author covers the threats to the animal, the reasons for its decline, recovery efforts in its behalf, and resources for more information and public involvement. As the state agency responsible for the stewardship of the state's wildlife resources, Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD), through the Endangered Species Program of the Resource Protection Division, seeks to provide current, accurate, and useful information to landowners and managers, educators, and the public concerning endangered and threatened species. This book is an important part of that ongoing effort.
