earliest recorded about 4000 years ago, in China
supposedly introduced into Europe by the Crusaders, though Aristotle wrote about it
introduced to England in about 860 A. D.
in the 1600¹s, there were a set of rules of ownership - only certain social classes could own a particular type of bird:
  • Emperors: Eagles
  • Kings and Queens: Gyrfalcons
  • Earls: Peregrine Falcons
  • Yeoman: Goshawk
  • Lady: Merlin
  • Priest: ³Sparrow Hawk² (Sharp-shinned Hawk)

Why are Raptors popular?
They have power, grace, beauty and the history of being ³Royal² birds

This is Gulliver, our Great Horned Owl, and a 6 day old owlet that she is fostering. The photo was taken on February 22nd. She has 2 young owlets she is raising this spring and they have each been eating 8 to 10 mice a day for several weeks now. They are almost full grown. Soon they will be moved on to a larger flight mew where they can practice flying and grow stronger. The Avian Reconditioning Center... a specialized wildlife facility where large outdoor enclosures will allow for physical reconditioning and natural weatherproofing of recuperating birds of prey, also known as raptors. In many cases this "physical therapy" is necessary to provide the birds with a more realistic chance of survival once released to the wild. Using traditional falconry techniques, The Avian Reconditioning Center (ARC) will also prepare and pre-release train young orphaned and/or injured raptors to hunt, thereby greatly increasing the odds of their survival in their natural habitat.

Birds of Prey The Order of Falconiformes (Hawks and Vultures) and Strigiformes (Owls) encompass the birds that we generally consider birds of prey. They are a diverse group which share a common place in the bird pyramid, top predators. These birds were, and still are in many cases, misunderstood and persecuted. As we learn and educate people more about these birds and their role in our environment hopefully this will change. Clicking on the highlighted names will take you to more detailed information about the specific bird. I obviously can not provide detailed information about every bird that I hope to include on this site. I have chosen to provide data for birds that are found (resident or frequent migrant) in the state of Ohio where I reside. The majority of these birds will be found throughout the Eastern United States and many found in the West as well. Jump to: Vultures Osprey Hawks Eagles ... Owls Order Falconiformes The birds in the Order Falconiformes are diurnal (daytime) hunters. This order is further separated into 5 families, as well as several sub-families. By each family name there is a small amount of general information about the family and what distinguishes them from other members of the order. Family Cathartidae (7 Species) This family includes the New World Vultures which are distributed throughout North and South America. What distinguishes them from other members of the order is a bare head as well as having perforate nostrils and they lack a syrinx (a unique organ that produces complex vocalizations). There are 7 species found in this family, the most common probably being the Turkey Vulture (

SNAKE RIVER "BIRDS OF PREY" EXPEDITIONS
By WSRT
Our Mission
We have a special interest in the Snake River "Birds of Prey" National Conservation Area and offer a wide variety of tours. We explain, through our tours, why this unique area has become so popular for the nesting raptors. On our field trips, you will get a chance to view many species of "Birds of Prey." Our expert guides will help you identify the many types of raptors, their nests and the different areas where they might be found. This boat trip is much like a Tom Sawyer float; this is not a white water float trip, but a very clam ride in large boats with comfortable seats. The much publicized and very controversial "Birds of Prey" National Conservation Area came into being after a long and extensive research program. The findings were instrumental in setting up and setting aside this large area 482,640 acres of nesting and hunting grounds. Some of the birds we hope you will see include the golden eagle, prairie falcons, red-tailed, ferruginous, marsh and Swainson's hawks, the American kestrels, turkey vultures, bar, great horned, short-eared, screech, burrowing and long-eared owls and ravens. Other raptors that seasonally use the canyon for nesting and feeding include the bald eagles, peregrine falcons, American rough-legged hawks, osprey, sharp shinned, Cooper's hawks and merlin.
STEVE GUINN

He has spent all of these years working and learning with the experts. There is no other licensed guide that knows the area better than he does.

Guidance to Show Organisers and Display Teams These notes have been prepared by the Countryside Alliance and the Hawk Board in consultation with other groups interested and experienced in falconry. These notes are considered necessary, particularly in today's political climate for field sports. In drawing attention to the protected species used in falconry, there is a risk of stimulating a demand for participation that cannot be satisfied. It is hoped that this leaflet will be helpful to both Show Organisers and Display Teams in setting out what is expected of those responsible for demonstrations. Displays must be well organised and well executed. The Hawk Board Jim Chick (Chair)

Any publicity involving birds of prey has a potential for benefit and harm.. Benefit comes from increasing appreciation of birds of prey and the art of falconry. Harm comes from stimulating a desire to possess hawks in those who lack the time and expertise to look after them or who may try to obtain them illegally: or by showing birds in a condition that is detrimental to the birds and possibly to the viewing public.

Florida Audubon began just a few miles away in Maitland in 1900, and the House displays the archives of Audubon's conservation battles in Florida, as well as provides current issues and information on how you can be engaged and help.

Watching Wildlife
As you explore the Refuge you will be amazed at the diversity of animals and plants you see. Seney provides habitat (food, water, shelter and space) for all its residents. Brown watchable wildlife signs have been placed throughout the Refuge. They represent good habitat for the wildlife shown. Observation decks along the Marshland Wildlife Drive also provide great wildlife viewing and additional wildlife information. Binoculars and field guides will help you see and recognize suitable habitat and specific markings on plants and animals you encounter. To improve your chances of being in the right place at the proper time, check out the viewing tips in this guide. Below are the featured wildlife symbols you will see on the trails. Birds of Prey: Bald eagles, osprey, and owls use their talons (feet) to catch and tear their prey - other animals. Eagles and osprey nest, eat, and perch in tall trees such as white pines. Fish are a large part of both species' diet. Osprey and mature eagles both have white heads; immature eagles appear completely dark. Osprey differ from eagles in that they have a distinctive black eye band.

EQUINOX: Life, Love, and Birds of Prey
Dan O'Brien (212 pages) LB
Price $22.95 HB
Feeling a warming sense of purpose, Dan O'Brien decides to devote himself entirely, for the first time in his life, to his greatest loves; falconry, his bird dogs, and the prairie he calls home. He obtains a remarkable falcon chick who immediately distinguishes herself with her ferocity. Her powers of flight are awe-inspiring, her hunting success astounding. She captivates him. What he learns from her and from what happens one wind driven day lead him to see fully things he had only just begun to glimpse. Set in the high plains of South Dakota, Equinox is a lyrical evocation of the grasslands; it is also a story of a life lived closely to the natural cycles of the earth, and of a midlife revelation of the importance of staying connected to all things held dear.
