22. Boa Constrictors In Yellowstone???
Boa! By Carl Core. A houseboat on wheels rolls to a stop at the gateof Yellowstone. You can't be too careful. Bizarre Boa Facts!
http://www.griztrax.net/ravenimages/boa.html
Boa!
By Carl Core
A house-boat on wheels rolls to a stop at the gate of Yellowstone. The ranger smiles at the winnebago captain and takes his twenty bucks, exchanging it for a "warnings for morons" packet. "Don't fall off cliffs. Please don't look directly into the cone at Old Faithful. Bears have teeth, and buffalo have horns!" The "captain" takes the packet and complains about the price. The ranger politely reminds the man in the road-condo that there is much to see in Yellowstone. (The ranger thinks to himself, in a better world he would be allowed to deny entry to certain individuals). But instead of voicing this opinion to the "captain", he smiles politely and asks a young girl that has appeared in the captains porthole, "What would you like to see in Yellowstone?" With big, wide eyes staring back at the ranger, the little girl excitedly replies: "Why, a boa constrictor of course!" I don't think so... When visitors entering Yellowstone are asked what animal they would most like to see, the answer is often the grizzly, or the wolf, and many times the bison. It's almost never the boa constrictor. In fact, most people coming to Yellowstone would think this is the "last place on earth" they would run into a boa. I mean, this isn't the Amazon after all.

Red tailed boas ( Boa constrictor constrictor ) are commonly found in the pet trade, and Boa constrictor imperator can be found as well, among other less common subspecies. The care for all the species is fairly similar. Before committing to ownership of a boa constrictor, be sure you will be able to handle the size and strength of a full grown snake for the 25-30 years your snake might live. A full grown boa constrictor (red tailed) will reach 8-10 feet long and weigh up to 50 pounds. These are very muscular and thick bodied snake. While generally quite docile in temperament, it is important to respect the inherent strength of these animals and that could inflict serious injury to a person. As a general rule, for a constricting snake over 6-8 feet it is a good idea to have a second person present while handling the snake, just in case assistance is required. Keep in mind also that large, secure housing is required for these snakes, and as adults need large prey such as large rats or even rabbits.

This discussion topic submitted by Jeff Eakin ( eakinjl@po.muohio.edu ) on 2/28/99.
My discussion will be dealing with a snake of the family Boidae, an animal that we will probably encounter on our trip to Costa Rica. During our trip we will encounter many of the different species of this snake. They have many different appearances and adaptations that set each specie apart. My presentation will present the traits unique to each specie. First, however, I will be talkingabout generalities for both reptiles and then constrictor snakes. Rant - Puppies Fed to Boa Constrictors
Does your classroom have any pets? Would you have any problems watching a puppy being fed to a snake? That's not something every kid can handle but it didn't seem to stop one teacher. A biology teacher in Kansas keeps two boa constrictors in his classroom. Sometimes he feeds them during class so students can see how they eat. He took it too far when he planned on feeding them three puppies . It doesn't make a difference that the puppies were unwanted. They had been donated by a school board member who operates a shelter where animals are put to sleep. Matthew Parton, the teacher, certainly wasn't being sensitive when it came to his students. Some students can't handle watching snakes eat rats and mice . Watching an animal that's normally considered a pet be devoured by a snake is asking too much from students. If it's during class time, do the kids have the option of not watching the eating process? There's a campaign to have Matthew fired, which may be a little harsh. Matthew needs to keep away from pets and stick to his snake's normal diet. Unless you're in China, puppies aren't part of the food chain. Hey, my name is Alicia and I am a student in Kentucky. My class and I visited this Web site and clicked on "Puppies fed to boa constrictor," and I almost had a heart attack. First, that is absolutely pathetic for that kind of news to even be revealed over the internet. Those puppies were innocent and should not have been fed to anything when they are so helpless and harmless. A snake should be fed rats or something that it is actually supposed to be fed, not puppies that are supposed to have homes, families, and love just like any human would want or need. I think that that teacher should be sued and fired. What kind of school would want to have a reputation like that? What school would allow something this disturbing to go on?

http://wonderclub.com/Wildlife/reptiles/BoaConstrictor.html
World Wonders Atlas Wildlife Celebrities ... WonderClub.com BOA CONSTRICTOR The boa constrictor kills its prey by constriction. Once it catches its victim, the snake wraps its body around the prey in coils, tightening its grip each time the victim breathes out. Eventually no longer able to breathe, the prey dies by suffocation. HABITAT The boa constrictor's preferred habitat is rainforest, but it it also found in semiarid savannah. Because its range covers such a large area, the boa constrictor varies considerably in color, marking, and size. On Hog Island, off Central America, the boa constrictor is seldom longer than 3 feet; in most of Central America, it reaches 10 feet, while in Trinidad and Venezuela, it can grow to 20 feet. In the warmer areas, the boa constrictor is active throughout the year. However, in the cooler climes, it may spend long periods of time inactive. BREEDING After fertilization, the eggs remain in the female's body, where they develop over several months inside thin membranes. Unlike its close relative, the python, the boa constrictor gives birth to live fully formed young. The protective membranes rupture as the young are released. As many as sixty snakes are born at one time, each measuring 17-20 inches. The young boa constrictor begins feeding within a week or two after its birth and grows quickly, usually reaching a yard in length after several months. It is sexually mature at 2-3 years when it reaches 6-10 feet.
