Captive Husbandry and Propagation of the Boa Constrictors and Related Boas David Fogel 1997 HC 97pp Boas are a diverse group of both New and Old World snakes. Adult specimens of certain sand boa species attain a maximum size of only two to three feet, while the green anaconda may exceed 30 feet in length. For decades, humans have maintained boas in captivity. Recreating a suitable environment in which various boas species can thrive and even reproduce has always been a challenge for the herpetoculturist. Captive Husbandry and Propagation of the Boa Constrictors and Related Boas contains detailed information specific to boa species or sub-species. All major captive care considerations are addressed allowing boa keepers to provide for and possibly breed their captives. Back

Pythons and Boa Constrictors
[Some people actually LIKE snakes and even keep them as pets. Here are some little known factoids about them. You can see photos of our resident ball python (Indy) and boa constrictor (Harley) in the Paw Prints Attic Pythons (like boas) are constrictors. They squeeze their victims hard enough to stop the breathing. Just because you weigh 200 pounds doesn't mean you can't be swallowed by a python. Records show that a 200-pound black bear was swallowed by a regal python. Pythons eat leopards Each animal has a familiar name and a technical name. Both for its genus and its species. But only two animals have the same name to cover all these categories: the boa constrictor and the gorilla. (In fact, the mountain variety of what you and I call a gorilla is identified scientifically as a "gorilla gorilla gorilla.") Most snakes breathe in waltz time. No snake is a vegetarian. X-ray a live snake and you'll kill it. Snakes can't back up. http://www.geocities.com/kashalinka/ReadingRm/factoids/

Care Of Pythons And Boa Constrictors In Captivity
Introduction:
Housing:
Being a responsible snake owner starts with an escape proof enclosure. Stacking books on top of the vivarium lid is not adequate and is asking for the animal to escape. An enclosure with the sliding top or front or a hinged lid and locking mechanism is necessary for housing snakes. The size of the enclosure is relative to the size of the snake. Keep in mind that most pythons and boas grow rather quickly and require substantial facilities. Buy or build an appropriate enclosure that has a locking mechanism and prevents escape. The ground material or substrate should be something that is easily replaced or cleaned. Newspaper is often ideal but for a more attractive cage the use of indoor/outdoor carpeting will also work. Hiding material and decorations should also be simple and easy to remove for cleaning such as pieces of wood, cork board, and clay pots. A shallow dish of fresh water is supplied for drinking and should be of sufficient size for the snake to soak in as an aid to thermoregulation and shedding. When the snake is of sufficient size the bathtub can be used as a soak pit once or twice weekly. Misting with a water bottle is also enjoyed by many snakes. Clean the cage and water dish as needed but at least on a weekly basis.

Elands Veterinary Clinic Information Sheet
Boa Constrictors.
INTRODUCTION
The gracious shape, coloration and relative docile nature of this medium-sized snake makes the boa constrictor ( Boa constrictor spp ) one of the most popular reptile pets. Boas are amongst the longest lived of all species of snakes reaching twenty years or more.
VIVARIUM DESIGN AND THE CAPTIVE ENVIRONMENT
The floor area of the vivarium must not be less than the length of the snake. It is recommended that a single adult is kept in a vivarium measuring a minimum of 6'x2'. The vivarium should be of melamine construction. Plenty of height (24") to the vivarium, will allow the provision of overhead lights and heaters. In adequate ventilation resulting in respiratory infections is common, providing a 2" strip of fine mesh along the middle of the back wall of the cage, with two 12"x3" controllable ventilation panels at opposite ends will suffice. Never reduce ventilation to maintain a high humidity. The 6mm sliding glass doors should be mounted on a 6" strip of melamine and kept locked.
HEATING
In order to provide some degree of backup, it is wise to use more than one heater and an accurate thermostat. Provide an accurately controlled thermal gradient which ranges from a maximum basking area at one end to a minimum cool area at the other. Ceramic heaters, soil-warming cables and underfloor heater mats can be used to provide day and night heating, while spotlights can only be used during the day. All heating devices must be screened if fatal or disfiguring burns are to be avoided. Ceramic heaters and spot lights can be housed within mesh cages while heater mats and warming cables can be hidden under a false floor. Proportional auto-dimming thermostats are recommended (e.g. Habi-Stat, Microclimate, and Vivarium Temperature Controller). Check the performance of the thermostat against an accurate thermometer.

Laces, Hooks, and Boa Constrictors
by Lady Melisande of Hali Helping Hand
One always reads about and sees pictures of women being laced into corsets, but this was much less common than you might think. Every corset had fitting laces up the back, but also most had hooks and eyes running up the front. Most women put on a new corset, got someone else to lace it to fit perfectly but comfortably, and thereafter got in and out by the hooks in front. Now, the extremely fashionable, wanting to skim off every eighth-inch and having maids with nothing better to do, did lace and unlace. They wrapped the corset around the torso, hooked it closed, then the maid (sometimes husband or lover) pulled every bit of slack out of the laces. The corset was so tight that the hooks strained at the eyes, and the lacing was best loosened before these could be moved to unhook. So you do not step in and out of a corset: you wrap it around yourself like a belt. Also, if necessary, a woman can very well get in and out of one unassisted. The knot on the laces is at the bottom of the corset in back. The woman need only be able to reach around to her tail bone and pick the knot open, then pull a few crosses loose. Alternately, a corset may have one lace from top down to waist, with a second lace below that, but the knots are still all in reach. The difficult part of undressing solo is not the corset but the zillion little buttons up the back, such as survive often on wedding dresses. The charming and scholarly Janet Burgess is a superb provider of books, shoes, hats, patterns, and dress goods to re-enactors and costumers. She also can't resist using her catalog for Amazon Dry Goods as a forum, as we use this web page. She has dug out reliable evidence that those claimed Victorian 18-inch waists were often much larger.

http://www1.kwic.com/~retic1/boas_index.htm
Most boas are found from Central Mexico through Central and South America, but not all. You can find them virtually around the globe. Boas are constricting snakes, which means they wrap their prey and over power it until it becomes unconscious, then dies. They don't crush their prey as some people may think. They are a primitive snake with vestigial pelvic girdles and hind limbs present within. You can see this on either side of the vent as a pair of "claws or spurs." These claws are usually longer in males and are used in courtship and copulation. Boas are ovoviviparous, meaning giving birth to live young. Boas are a prolific animal. Some litters of several dozen young can be produced depending on the size of the female and the size of the babies. Boas come in all sizes, colours and from different habitats. There are Tree Boas, Sand Boas, Ground Boas, Water Boas, etc. A couple examples to show how different boas can be are the Central American Dwarf Boa at about 30" as an adult. This rainforest loving creature(Ungaliophis panamensis) is one of 4 genera of the subfamily (Tropidophinae). It is a pale brown in color with greyish and rust tones. It is a very rare and interesting boa.

Selection
Signs of Disease
Pale mucous membranes (lining of the mouth)
Mucous or white discharge in the mouth
Lumps on body
Retained dry skin Thin appearance with prominent spine Check for external parasites i.e. mites and ticks Size / Growth Neonates (newborns) are 12 to 24 inches and grow rapidly reaching 3-5 feet in one year and 4-7 feet by the second year. Adult boas range from 4-10 feet, with 15 feet possible and pythons can reach lengths in excess of 20 feet!!!! Growth is directly related to diet and housing conditions. Diet can be used to control growth. The more frequently the snake is fed, the faster it will grow. Care must be taken in that excessive feeding of a confined snake can lead to obesity and the associated health problems. Many cities, subdivisions, and counties have laws regulating the ownership of reptiles that exceed certain lengths. Investigate these laws before purchasing a reptile. It can save a lot of frustration down the road.

Why Study This Topic?
What I want to find out is the Boa Constrictor's habitat; it's length, ability, strength, and how dangerous it is. I want to know if it is easy for them to find food, and if it is, what do they eat? Why do I want to know this? I'll tell you. I think snakes are interesting, even if I think they're scary. Boa Constrictors sound amazing, and that's why I'd enjoy studying them.
What Was Already Known
I already knew Boa Constrictors were dangerous. I knew they could wrap themselves around animals and suffocate them. They are likely to crush one's bones by doing this. Boa Costrictors are endangered probably because humans are scared of them and want to get rid of them. I know that Boa Constrictors are able to grow to be heavy snakes. These are snakes you don't want to meet up with in the wild.
Search for Information
On the internet, I learned that Boa Constrictors are typically grey or silver with a series of brown or deep red saddles along their back. They are found in the warmest parts of the Americas, from Mexico to Argentina, and can reach lengths up to eighteen feet. Boas feed on birds, reptiles, and mammals. A Boa Constrictor will sieze its prey with his mouth, swiftly coil around it, and tighten its grip so that the victim can not expand its chest to breathe. Then, he will eat the victim.

These are a smaller striatus subspecies that reaches 4-6 feet in length. Altogether, they are a very close relative of the Bimini Is. Boa E.s.fosteri . Their neonatal/adult husbandry and reproduction are quite similar as well. These two subspecies vary only slightly in color and pattern. To the untrained eye, these two boas can be easily confused. Berry Island Boas are yet another of the many overlooked insular boas.

57. Bimini Island Boa Constrictors
They have the demeanor and iridescence similar to their Rainbow relatives andthe arboreal tendencies and vigor of an Amazon Tree Boa (Corallus sp.).
http://www.spitfirereptiles.com/biminiinfo.html
As with many insular Epicrates species, these boas are rarely kept in captivity. Published info is even more rare, virtually nonexistant. This subspecies ranges from the Bahama Islands, Easter Cay, and the group that makes up the Bimini Islands.
Bimini Island Boas are a medium sized, semi-arboreal animal. They reach 4.5-7 feet with a few specimens documented at just over 8 feet. These boas are only rarely bred by only a handful of herpetoculturists. Multiple males are often used to induce successful copulations. Some breeders who have worked extensively with the insular
Epicrates species have concluded that the use of multiple males is almost a neccessity. Females usually have approximately 8-22 offspring in the Summer or Fall, yet parturition has been recorded at almost any time of year. Neonates are about 112 inches in length. They are so spindley and thin that even the smallest newborn pinky mouse will put a substantial lump in them. Often, neonates require scenting of the mouse with that of a frog or an anole until they can recognize unscented mice as a prey item. Hideboxes are used by these boas and we highly reccommend them.
Bimini Island Boas are yet another of a wide group of boid species that have been very much overlooked by the eye of the everyday herper. They have the demeanor and iridescence similar to their Rainbow relatives and the arboreal tendencies and vigor of an Amazon Tree Boa
