ASME NEWS
W ith the assistance of a Bobsled Start Simulator designed by a team that included five ASME members, U.S. Olympians ended a 46-year medal drought in bobsled competition.
When the members' role in the design of the simulator was covered last month in ASME NEWS, the result of the Simulator's role in sled design and athlete preparation was unknown.
Now that Olympic medals for the 2002 Games have been awarded, some credit for ending the medal drought for U.S. bobsledders can be given to the simulator designers, known long before the Olympics officially began as the Gold Team.
The Gold Medal went to the female team, the first women's bobsled competition in Olympic history. The male team won the Silver Medal. Members of both medal-winning teams used the simulator in training.
Vonetta Flowers, who also used the simulator, was a member of the Gold Medal-winning two-woman bobsled team. Flowers also became the first African-American athlete to win a Gold Medal at the Winter Games.

  • Bobsledding is one of the oldest Winter Olympic sports and debuted at the first Winter Olympics ever. Although its earlier wooden ancestors probably originated in the United States, England and Switzerland can claim the invention of the modern sport of bobsledding. The four-man race was the first Olympic bobsled event in 1924. The two-man race was added to the Olympic schedule in 1932. Women's two-man bobsledding will debut at the 2002 Winter Olympic Games in Salt Lake City, Utah. The early details of the history of skeleton sliding and bobsledding is widely disputed. One such account credits the first metal skeleton sled to an American tourist, Stephen Whitney, in 1888. Women's skeleton will debut at the 2002 Winter Olympic Games in Salt Lake City, Utah, along with the debut of women's bobsled.

The unheralded duo's two-run total time in their bobsled — USA 2 — of 1 minute, 37.76 seconds at the Utah Olympic Park easily beat the two German teams that walked away with the silver and bronze medals. The better-known American team of driver Jean Racine and brakeman Gea Johnson, in USA 1, finished fifth. Johnson was hobbled by an injured left hamstring and could not push that sled as hard and as fast as she needed to for that team to gain the gold or any other Olympic honors.

Past How did it start? - in the late 1880's in Albany, New York racing lumber sleds. At that time, the sport also became popularized in Swiss winter resorts. The first sleds had rope steering and no brakes. They were stopped by using a garden rake. Bobsled first appeared in the Olympics in 1928 when Billy Fiske of the USA won a gold in the five-man race. The last U.S. Olympic medal was won by Art Tyler in the 1956 Cortina, Italy Games. He took a bronze in four-man. A Kodak engineer, he designed, built and raced his own sleds, the first sled ever to use an articulated front and back. Shimer, 35, has been among the leading drivers in the two- and four-man competitions during this World Cup season. If these Olympics have a trap door, it would seem to be the two uphill portions of the Spiral bobsled and luge track. Said the wary Shimer: "Nobody seems to be able to do that part right two times in a row." Saturday, February 21, 1998 Brian Shimer fails again to medal by two-hundredths of a second NAGANO, Japan (AP) Nobody should have to endure this much pain. A decade ago, Brian Shimer watched Brent Rushlaw lose an Olympic bobsled medal for the United States by two-hundredths of a second. Four years ago, Shimer became the only man in Olympic history to be disqualified from a four-man bobsled race for having sled runners that were warmer than the rules allowed. On Saturday, Shimer lost an Olympic medal that was within his grasp. Incredibly, it, too, was by two-hundredths of a second.

If you've been inspired by those begoggled daredevils hurtling down the bobsled runs in Nagano, there's a fast track waiting for you. Many of the cities that spent millions to build the twisted tracks for previous Winter Olympics are happy to sell you a ride. Every host city since 1980 has had to build a brand new track. The bill for Nagano's Spiral track ran to $79 million, and it could cost as much as $2.5 million annually just to keep it from becoming a total writeoff. Since it's hard to fill a high school stadium with bobsled fans, it's unlikely they'll bring in that kind of cash hosting future competitions. To help pay the bills, and to keep themselves on the bobsledding and luge maps after the Olympics end, a number of past Olympic sites sell rides. Even the course that will be used for the Salt Lake City games in 2002 has started public rides to help defray costs years before the Games begin. Tracking History Not all Olympic tracks have survived. Since bobsledding is not a popular sport in Scandinavia, the committee planning the 1952 Games in Oslo decided they didn't want to inflict a huge concrete eyesore on the city for decades after the games left. So the Norwegians carved a channel from ice that melted away.

    Vonetta Flowers
Vonetta Flowers became the first African-American to win a gold medal at the Winter Olympics, as part of a two-woman bobsled team. On February 19 th , 2002, Flowers and her partner, Jill Bakken, became the first American women to win a gold medal in the bobsled competition. This is also the first bobsled medal for any American since 1948. Bakken and Flowers, driver and brake-woman respectively, had a two-run combined time of 1 minute, 37.76 seconds. At the age of 28, her goal was to make the Summer Olympics but she said that God had other plans. Flowers was a track star from the University of Alabama, Birmingham, but had two knee operations and ankle surgery. Never in her wildest dreams did she think that after answering an ad for bobsledding, she would become one of the most highly recognized athletes in the sport.

Nutricise Although the sport is sometimes thought of as being relatively new, sled racing is actually one of the oldest of all winter sports. The word luge comes from the French word for sled. In Germany the sport is known as rodel, and it is in the alpine countries of Europe that the sport began. References to sled racing first appeared in chronicles from Norway in 1480 and the Erz Mountain area in 1552. The first international luge race took place in 1883 with 21 competitors representing seven nations, including the United States. The race was organized by hotels in the Swiss resort of Davos and took place over the 4-kilometer (2.5 mile) road from St. Wolfgang to Klosters. At the turn of the century, luge was actually governed by the International Bobsled Federation, which administered all ice-track sports. In 1953 the sport gained its own international governing body with the formation of the Federation Internationale de Luge de course (FIL), and in 1964 luge was inaugurated as an Olympic sport at the IX Winter Olympic Games in Innsbruck, Austria. Having no formal luge program at the time, the United States' first Olympic luge team consisted mainly of American soldiers who were stationed in Europe at the time of the Games. Back in the United States, luge attracted a small number of athletes who were relegated to training on the 1932 Olympic bobsled run in Lake Placid, New York. With no formal national organization to support, develop and promote luge, American sliders remained in relative obscurity over the next couple of decades.

With the first Olympic Winter Games an enormous success, it was no surprise that the St. Moritz Games attracted an 84 percent increase in the number of participants including a 100% increase of female athletes. The Games started poorly due to extremely mild temperatures caused by the "fohn", the warm wind that sweeps the Swiss mountains from the south. The 1928 Winter Games in St. Moritz marked the first time Germany was allowed to participate in any Olympic competition after World War I; the Soviet Union was still notably absent. The Germans won a disappointing one bronze medal. Bobsledding was in the news at the 1928 Games. A new event, the skeleton sled, was upgraded from a demonstration sport and added to the program. In addition, teams in the four-man bobsled event had an option to include a fifth member. They all took up that option.
