Basic bonsai gardening techniques
Here are a number of bonsai gardening tips for your use. Pruning: Bonsai gardening technique #1. To prune a small to medium-sized branch. It is important to use very sharp tools. They should be sterilized by soaking them in methylated spirits for a few minutes. Use special branch pruners to cut the branch off close to the trunk. It will heal more neatly if you create a slight hollow in the exposed wood. Clean the edges with a very sharp knife. Seal the wound thoroughly especially around the edges. Repotting: Bonsai gardening technique #2. It is possible to repot any time during the dormant season. If the bonsai has filled the container with roots it will need to be root pruned. The ideal time to root prune is in the spring. This allows the wounds to heal quickly. After repotting, it is advisable to wait two weeks before heavy pruning, and delay feeding for four to six weeks. Wiring: Bonsai gardening technique #3. The principle of wiring is simple, but it takes a little practice. Practice on a branch from a garden shrub that is similar to your bonsai. It will show you what gauge wire you will need and how far the branch will bend without breaking. Always hold the wired part of the branch with one hand and coil the wire with the other. When you bend the branch, do it gradually with your hands spread. Hold as much of the branch as possible and use both thumbs as leverage points. Remove the wire with bonsai wire cutters.

The Beauty of bonsai
Ancient art adds 'special kind of energy' to garden by Mavis Noble Most people have the basic idea of bonsai - it's a tiny plant in a small pot. However, the depth and complexity of bonsai gardening goes way beyond that. "Bonsai is an ancient art," said Mike Baker, a Pleasanton resident and third-year bonsai student. "Our sensei (instructor) says it takes a year to learn to water, three years to learn to wire. Some bonsai are handed down generation to generation; they can be 300- and 400-year-old trees." The word bonsai (pronounced bone-sigh) is derived from the Japanese word "hom," meaning tray, and "sai," meaning tree, and Baker says the practice need not be expensive. "My trees are almost all new trees," he said. "I purchase nursery stock. A plant can cost as little as $8 to $10 and you can put it in an $8 pot. I have a tool bucket with $1,000 in tools but beginners should get cheaper tools until they're sure they're going to stick with it." The ideal is a miniature version of a full-sized counterpart. Roots are pruned to limit size. Branches are pruned, wired and peeled to create gnarled, wind-blown and age-worn effects.

Art in Miniature The art of creating miniature indoor trees began over two thousand years ago in China. Now known as bonsai, this term derived from the Chinese word Delivery Watering Location Think carefully before deciding where to stand your bonsai. It will need lots of light but should be kept out of the midday sun. The temperature should be warm, so avoid windowsills, where conditions can fluctuate. If your chosen location has only once source of light, remember to regularly turn your tree to ensure balanced growth. Rethink the location if your tree starts to lose its leaves. Fertilizer Pruning Repotting Make sure you repot your bonsai every two or three years, preferably in the spring. Trim away a small amount of the root, and replace the old soil. Troubleshooting

Why Winter? We may not welcome winter with its dark days and grey weather, but the plants in our gardens do. Stephen Anderton looks at just what this season's good for!
Gardeners must never be depressed at the thought of winter. Be depressed at the thought of last year's lousy, non-existent summer if you will, but not by winter. Winter may be less busy than summer, especially for us gardeners, but there is so much going on, visibly and invisibly. Underground it's business as usual. Tulip and daffodil and crocus bulbs , which spent the summer resting in the dry ground, are busy putting out a whole new set of roots to anchor and feed themselves when in leaf and flower later in the year. Trees that have lost their leaves will not be drawing much water now, and the ground will be wetter below them and cool, telling those bulbs it's time to take a deep breath and start to put out roots and flower again. But evergreen trees and shrubs are still using water, especially when it's windy. And their roots are still growing, even if the branches are not. Potted evergreen
