Archived Columns Bonsai Gardening Can Make for Mini Masterpieces If you crave a little peace after the holidays, following the gardening path of ancient Japanese Buddhist monks might be the answer. Bonsai, the practice of growing tiny trees in containers, has served as both a meditative tool for the past 2000 years, and a beautiful enhancement for the garden. Although the ancient art of bonsai began in China in the third century B.C. and was developed and perfected in Japan, bonsai cultivation is an enjoyable and rewarding pastime for modern gardeners too. In Japanese bonsai is literally translated as 'tray planting,' referring to the shallow dish usually used to cultivate the petite plants. Bonsai are miniaturized trees with very characteristic growth and cultivation requirements. A delightful and entertaining art and hobby, it involves dwarfing trees and developing them into aesthetically appealing shapes by pruning and training them in containers using special techniques. The tree and pot are viewed as a single harmonious unit with shape, texture and color complimenting each other. Every branch and twig of a bonsai is carefully shaped or eliminated until the chosen image is achieved, and then the image is maintained and improved by pruning and trimming.

bonsai. Creating the appearance of aging is another of the basic tenetsof any good bonsai gardening. Many bonsais take years to grow.
http://home.epix.net/~einet/
The word bonsai translated means "tree in a pot or tray." Though the word is Japanese, the art itself has much deeper roots. In order to experience the feeling of nature and the beauty of trees found in the wild, the art of bonsai was born. Minature trees were cultivated in pots in japan in the ninth centuary, but NO-ONE knowes exactly when the first bonsai was grown.
The art of bonsai is the art of imitating the spirit of nature. It has as one of its basic elements the idea of balance, of bringing all the elements of tree growing, of line and form, into an element and pleasing effect. The word also carries connotations of patience, since there is no such thing as instant bonsai. Creating the appearance of aging is another of the basic tenets of any good bonsai gardening. Many bonsais take years to grow.
Bonsai has become to most of us a Japanese art of dwarfing trees, of miniaturizing plants to make them easily accessible. This is done by trimming the branches, leaves, trunks and roots to keep them in a compact size and container. But there are many misconceptions about the art of bonsai, not the least of which is origin.
No-one knows exactly when the first bonsai was grown, but we do know that the Chinese cultivated minature landscapes in shallow contaniers called penjing, in ancient times. And that the firs record of penjing was around 200B.C. single tree plantings called pen-sai(the Chinese translation of bonsai) came later.

Leading Strategic Change by Lance Kurke and James Hoffman
Part one of a two-part series
The enemy invariably attacks on one of two occasions: when you're ready and when you're not. In which situation do you find yourself? This month and next we'll discuss two diametrically opposed perspectives on planning: Bonsai gardening and the Art of War. Your particular industry and situation will lend more relevance to one over the other, but considering both may make you think differently about your business and planning process. Let's start with bonsai, the small, groomed Japanese trees. "Bonsai?" you ask. "How in the world ...?" Bonsai gardening effectively illustrates the dichotomy between short- and long-term planning that occurs in business. It starts with an individual's desire and vision of how the bonsai should look several years even hundreds of years into the future. This original bonsai gardener/designer must decide how to plant it, taking into account the terrain and the environmental conditions. Is this environment suitable for this type of bonsai? How will the seasonal effects and prevailing winds act upon it?
