Annuals

Quick to mature and many with brightly-colored flowers, most annuals bloom profusely all summer. Many gardeners shun them because they live just one season and are considered 'too easy', but what could be better for profuse summer color than loads of mixed annuals in borders, container gardens or hanging baskets? And they make excellent cut flowers. Go figure! Bulbs, Corms, Rhizomes and Tubers

Bonsai
It was about midday when the herbalist started his descent off the mountain. This trip home was to be a bit different. For instead of filling his backpack with the necessary plants for his shop in town,he left some space near the top.....enough for one small gnarly pine tree. It was a very special tree, one he'd passed by many times on his treks up and down the slopes. From his knowledge of plant cultivation, he knew the time was right for carefully separating the pine from its rocky habitat. Sometime later the herbalist decided to display his moutain treasure in an heirloom ceramic pot at the front of his shop to share with his customers.
This could have been Japan or China and at least a thousand years ago. Oriental aristocrats and commonfolk alike have enjoyed growing trees in pots for centuries.
Bonsai is the art of growing, training and maintaining minature versions of tree forms in containers. Its inception was probably initiated by a plantsman along some remote mountain path. Its development and refinement as a hobby over the centuries has taken different paths influenced primarily by the particular culture who so happened to embrace the art. The Chinese and Japanese view and express their love of nature differently. It is very evident when comparing their own unique styles and presentations of minature trees. Penjing, Chinese style bonsai, are dancing hewned forms. While the Japanese bonsai are flowing and more refined.
Here in the US bonsai have been enjoyed for about fifty years. In that short time we have molded the hobby to reflect our culture. With the tremendous diversity of plant material available to us thru native trees to US grown nursery stock to imported plants, the american bonsai enthusiasts are creating their own individual styling.... some of the wild and some of the mild. The art of bonsai has become so popular now around the world that it is truly an international hobby.

Bulbs for Naturalizing in North Texas
- Bulbs offer every gardener- from novice to expert- a wide and colorful range of year-round flowers. In cold climates, “Dutch” bulbs, like tulips, will return and bloom year after year with little care or encouragement. Not so here in the South. This class focuses on bulbs that will naturalize and perennialize in North Central Texas year after year. Leslie Finical Halleck, Associate Director of Horticulture Research, will use slides and detailed handouts to show you a wide variety of bulb species suited to our climate.
