by Susan Amoy Adult Moringa ovalifolia tree in the wild, Namibia. Succulent plants are fascinating in their diversity of form. In the wild, they range from towering trees, such as Moringa ovalifolia, to inch-high "living stones," like Lithops karasmontana. Many succulents, such as aloes, sedums, and kalanchoes, have become staples in the American garden and home. Now there is growing interest in applying bonsai techniques to succulents. Though it may seem like an odd matchup, bonsai practice can contribute much to our knowledge of succulent species, and succulents make interesting and unusual additions to bonsai collections. Bonsai is an ancient art form that seeks to re-create nature in miniature. It was born out of a deep appreciation for the natural world and a desire to convey the spiritual power and beauty of the larger landscape to more confined domestic spaces. Its practitioners developed proven methods for pruning and shaping plant specimens to exhibit the forms of adult trees molded by their natural environments. There are many reasons why succulents make ideal subjects for bonsai. Native to tropical and semitropical arid regions around the globe, many species are naturally small or undergo "dwarfing" in the wild due to harsh conditions. Growing slowly from crevices and rocky ground and enduring abrasive winds, erratic water supply, dramatic fluctuations in daily temperature, browsing by animals, bright sunlight, and thin, fast-draining soil, mature succulents can actually end up looking like bonsai.

http://www.bonsai-nbf.org/china/assembly.htm
National Bonsai Foundation
How the Chinese Collection was Assembled
Artistic pot plants created in the United States have generally resembled Japanese bonsai. This is because American bonsai teachers have been trained by Japanese masters. They have learned Japanese techniques, studied Japanese pictures and emulated Japanese styles. While many American bonsaiists were aware that the art had originated in China, they tended to regard Japanese masterpieces as the ultimate achievement and Chinese trees as historical footnotes. In the early 1970s, American bonsaiists began to pay more attention to Chinese traditions. This development is due in no small measure to the efforts of Dr. Yee-sun Wu , a student of Chinese literature and art, who for many years maintained a large collection of artistic pot plants at his garden in Hong Kong. In 1969, "fearing that the Chinese art of training pot plants might someday be lost," Dr. Wu privately published a catalogue showing 200 of his trees. His philosophy draws heavily on his familiarity with art and literature: "Those who know about artistic pot plants all agree that in order to produce an exquisite work of art in the form of a pot plant, one has to put in a lot of patient hard work and also possess competent knowledge of horticulture and literary taste . . . . The trainer must be able to grasp the unique qualities of each variety and in the process of dwarfing retain its good points and discard the bad. His work is likened to that of the accomplished artist who, while reserving the major characteristics of the object he paints, brings out the best in the object with inspired five strokes of his brush and makes it even surpass the original in beauty."

http://www.hidatool.com/bonsai.html
The art of cultivating dwarf trees, and the plants developed by this method. Bonsai, developed over 1,000 years ago in Japan, derives from the Chinese practice of growing miniature plants. In bonsai cultivation, the plants are kept small and in true proportion to their natural models by growing them in small containers, feeding and watering only enough for healthy growth, pruning, and forming branches to the desired shape by applying wire coils. The selection of containers, the plant's position in a container, and the choice of single plants or a group are important aesthetic considerations.

"A truly detailed guide to bonsai, as an art, hobby and horticultural practice."
Bonsai...
The millennia-old art form, still going strongly today!
In Japanese, bonsai can be literally translated as 'tray planting' but since originating in Asia, so many centuries ago - it has developed into a whole new form. To begin with, the tree and the pot form a single harmonious unit where the shape, texture and colour of one, compliments the other. Then the tree must be shaped. It is not enough just to plant a tree in a pot and allow nature to take its course - the result would look nothing like a tree and would look very short-lived. Every branch and twig of a bonsai is shaped or eliminated until the chosen image is achieved. From then on, the image is maintained and improved by a constant regime of pruning and trimming. It is the art of dwarfing trees or plants and developing them into an aesthetically appealing shape by growing, pruning and training them in containers according to prescribed techniques. Overall, bonsai is a great interest, hobby or even profession to undertake. Although famous theologians have claimed that it is actually 90% art to a meager 10% of horticulture, it has to be said that a successful bonsai is most definitely a horticultural masterpiece.

U.S. National Arboretum Named Among the Top 10 Botanical Gardens in America The top ten botanical gardens were named and featured in a fully illustrated article in the April 2003 issue of Country Living Gardener . The U. S. National Arboretum was identified and described in this feature. Arboretum Director Dr. Thomas S. Elias attributes this to the concerted efforts by Arboretum staff and support groups over the last ten years to improve the quality of the garden displays, collections, grounds, visitor services, and outreach. The Arboretum Strategic Plan adopted seven years ago and the Arboretum Master Plan are helping to guide the development of the nation’s only federal funded arboretum. Other gardens featured in the article in addition to the U.S. National Arboretum included the New York Botanical Garden, the Missouri Botanical Garden, Strybing Arboretum and Botanical Gardens, Chicago Botanical Garden, and the Denver Botanic Gardens.
