There are two apple trees in the small garden and hens scratching in a wire coop. It's next to a low white-washed house built on the side of a hill and from the edge of the vegetable bed you can see a jumble of red tiled roofs, the village of Feketic with its skyline dominated by two huge churches. The dry earth is planted with spring onions, peas and parsley. Dogs are barking and cocks are crowing.
It's a village garden like tens of thousands of others in northern Serbia except for one thing: under the apple trees, paintings have been set on simple easels of long sticks lashed together. The canvases are covered with images of violence, intricately painted figures and animals, the dead and the dying in landscapes of burning red.

The importance of pluralist media in the development of a democratic society that respects human rights and the peace process has been emphasized by the international community since the signing of the Dayton/Paris Peace Agreement in 1995. Since 1996 the EC has allocated over 16 MEURO to its media and culture programme. The programme focuses on the strengthening of independent media, progress in the freedom of movement and cross-Entity exchanges, the promotion of human rights, democracy and civil society, and improvement of journalistic standards. In the EC committed 2 MEURO to the Open Broadcast Network (OBN), the cross-Entity independent television network, to assist in fair coverage of the first post-war elections. In addition, 16 smaller scale projects were funded ranging from office equipment, supplies and training for electronic and print media in both Entities, to the funding of programmes and publications that promote human rights and democracy. In approximately 4 MEURO was committed through the EC media and culture programme. In preparation for the 1997 elections and as a long-term benefit, the EC allocated 1.7 MEURO to upgrade the OBN system. A further 2.3 MEURO was allocated to 16 smaller scale projects in support of democracy and the peace process. Financial support was given to small independent media to reduce reliance on the economic and political powers that were dictating programming and content. EC funding also provided equipment, vehicles and salaries, new offices and stations, production of programmes that promote the peace process, and training in international standards of journalism.

Nevertheless, before starting any trip to the locations mentioned in this article, you must always remember the two main dangers in Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH): the roads, and the mines. Too bad for those, who want to take short cuts: there is a real risk in doing that, and it is not worth it.
First of all, BiH offers a large diversity of beautiful landscapes, from the small access to the Adriatic Sea in the South, to the beginning of the great Hungarian plain, in the North. In the middle, the Dinaric Alps surround small valleys and huge plateaux. But what a difference between the karstic landscape of the north western 'polje' (plateau) of the country and the high peaks at the Montenegrin border.
    Nature
Water is present everywhere in BiH. Following a river from its source to its confluence with bigger ones (or to the Adriatic Sea for the Neretva) is always a very beautiful trip, allowing you to admire the different states of its course: sources of the Bosna River and the Buna River (with its famous dervish cloister). Onrushing, when lined by sheer cliffs, like the Sutjeska. Cascading, like in the towns of Kravica, Jajce, Kamenica, Drvar or Skakarac. And slower, when the valley gets wider and the river reaches its mouth. By the way, rafting is an activity that has developed in BiH, especially in the Bihac and Mostar areas.

CROATIAN CULTURAL HERITAGE OF BOSNIA AND HERZEGOVINA IN THE PRE-ISLAMIC PERIOD
    EARLY PERIOD
On their arrival on today's territory of Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Croats search their first shelters in the ruins of Roman buildings; late classical refuges serve as their strongholds for the most necessary defense. Their early traces are found not far from Bijeljina, in Vrbljani near Kljuc and on Gradina around great fields of Western Bosnia. Some time after, the Croats begin to construct their primitive redoubts in plains, called today "gradiste". One of these, protected with dike and paling is found in Ukrina valley near the town of Derventa, and another one in Mahovljani near Banja Luka. The number of discovered edifices is not great. Among them are church on Panik near Bileca, one of the churches in Zavala, on Vidostak near Stolac and in Vrutci near Sarajevo. Rectangular shrinesand on the external walls are common characteristics of all the churches. The church on Panik was covered with frescoes, while the church in Vrutci was equipped with stone furniture enriched with interlaced ornamentation. According to unreliable information, a round six apse edifice was built in Rogacici near Blazuj and although ciborium dates from somewhat later period, the church could be included in the same group of churches. The ruins of the church in Lisicici containing a small apse and two apses on the eastern wall can also be ascribed to the late pre-Romanesque period.
