History
Early History
The area was part of the Roman province of Illyricum. Bosnia was settled by Serbs in the 7th cent.; it appeared as an independent country by the 12th cent. but later at times acknowledged the kings of Hungary as suzerains. Medieval Bosnia reached the height of its power in the second half of the 14th cent., when it controlled many surrounding territories. Bosnia also annexed the duchy of Hum, which, however, regained autonomy in 1448 and became known as Hercegovina. During this period the region was weakened by religious strife among Roman Catholics, Orthodox, and Bogomils . Thus disunited, Bosnia fell to the Turks in 1463. Hercegovina held out until 1482, when it too was occupied and joined administratively to Bosnia. The nobility and a large part of the peasantry accepted Islam.
Foreign Domination
Under Turkish rule, Bosnia and Hercegovina's economy declined. Physical remoteness facilitated the retention of medieval social structure, including serfdom (remnants of which lasted until the 20th cent.). Refusal by the Turkish to institute reforms led to a peasant uprising (1875) that soon came to involve outside powers and led to the Russo-Turkish War The assassination (1914) of Archduke Francis Ferdinand by a Serb nationalist in Sarajevo precipitated World War I. In 1918, Bosnia and Hercegovina were annexed to Serbia. The dismemberment of Yugoslavia during World War II led to Bosnia and Hercegovina's incorporation into the German puppet state of Croatia. Much partisan guerrilla warfare raged in the mountains of Bosnia during the war. In 1946, Bosnia and Hercegovina became one of the six constituent republics of Yugoslavia. Under the Communist regime Bosnia remained relatively undeveloped. Economic problems and ethnic quarrels during the 1980s led to widespread dissatisfaction with the central government.

History:
Yugoslavia section).
The elections that eventually took place in October 1996 asked voters to elect a three-person Presidency (Presidium) for the nation as a whole, as well as individual Presidents and parliaments for the two component entities, the Muslim-Croat Federation and Republika Srpska (see the Government section). The poll produced comprehensive victories for the main nationalist parties representing the three communities: the Party of Democratic Action (KCD) for the Muslims, the Croat Democratic Party (HDZ) and the Serb Democratic Party (SDS).
Subsequent polls in the Republika Srpska (1998) and the Muslim-Croat Federation (2000) saw the emergence of effective opposition parties: Sloga on the Serb side (which is now in power) and the Social Democratic Party on the Croat side which has mounted a serious challenge to the HDZ. The KCD remains the dominant party representing the Muslims. During 2000, the Croat-Muslim alliance, which had vanquished the Serbs five years earlier, started to disintegrate as hardliners in the Croat HDZ started to push for an independent Croat territory within Bosnia. The hostility between the two brought a dangerous new element into the already fragile Bosnian political situation, although international diplomatic pressure seems to have defused the conflict for the time being. In April 2002, the international mediator further undermined militant nationalists by enforcing a court ruling giving equal civil and political rights to all Bosnian citizens in all parts of the country.

Catalog: Book Manufacturer: New York University Press Authors: Noel Malcolm Release Date: September, 1996 Availability: Usually ships within 24 hours List Price: Our Price: Used Price: ThirdPartyNewPrice Price: More Details from Amazon.com Amazon international Product Reviews: Disturbingly accurate portrayal of Bosnia's past It is almost sad that the most accurate historic book about Bosnia was writen, not by a person born in Bosnia, but someone born outside it's borders. In Bosnia today there are three official versions of history, Bosnian, Croatian and Serb, remnances of which we can see in many loaded comments listed bellow, none of which give Bosnian history respect and accuracy it deserves. They are mostly expansions of the myths and deluded ilusions of people who never thought of Bosnia as their home, their homeland. Unfortunately, as it has happened so many times before, the few were able to tint the picture of Bosnia, not only to the world outside, but also tint the picture of Bosnia to people in Bosnia themselves. It is absurd, but true. Malcolm takes a bold step to clear that picture to both insiders and outsiders and bright the historical perspective closer to the truth.

History of Balkan conflict
Yugoslav Republics: Serbia and Montenegro remain joined in a truncated Yugoslav federation. Slovenia, Croatia, Macedonia and Bosnia-Herzegovina have each declared independence. Fighting: War erupted in June 1991 after Slovenia and Croatia declared independence. Slovenia's war ended in less than a month with under 70 dead. Croatia's war of secession against Serb rebels backed by the Yugoslav army lasted six months and killed an estimated 10,000 people. A tenuous cease-fire took hold in January 1992. In April 1992, Bosnian Serbs rebelled against Bosnia's independence and an estimated 200,000 people have died and millions lost their homes in their war against the Muslim-led government. People and religion: Serbs are Orthodox Christians; Croats are Roman Catholic; Bosnia's Muslims are Slavs who adopted their faith during centuries of Ottoman Turkish rule. History: Croatia was under Austro-Hungarian rule until Yugoslavia was formed in 1918. Its Serb minority - about 12% of the population - was introduced by the Habsburgs into border areas as good fighters against Ottoman incursions. Bosnia-Herzegovina was under Ottoman, then briefly under Austro-Hungarian rule before 1918. In 1991, its population was:

Deployed reservists will record history of Bosnia mission
WASHINGTON - It started with a combat cowboy striding onto the battlefields of World War II, pen ready and spiral notebook open to document the war as it happened. The equipment is more high-tech now, but the dozen U.S. Army and National Guard reservists on notice for possible deployment to Bosnia will essentially perform the same duties as S.L.A. Marshall, the first soldier dispatched by the U.S. military to detail battles as they happened. "We're not Ernie Pyle or Walter Cronkite on the front lines," Capt. Tom Jensen said, referring to the two famous war correspondents. "We're not journalists. We're collecting data and doing interviews for posterity." The commander of the Army National Guard's 102d Military History Detachment of Topeka, Kan., Jensen served as a reservist in the 1991 Persian Gulf War, too, heading a 200-man ordnance unit. "I'm glad I'll be doing military history this time," said Jensen, a 46-year-old history teacher who saw four soldiers die from a Scud missile attack. The Army has 15 reserve military history detachments and one active-duty, with one officer and two enlisted men in each unit.

Browse Powells History Books Waging Modern War: Bosnia, Kosovo, and the Future of Combat by Wesley K. Clark, General Wesley K. Clark Listed under Modern Warfare Safe Area Gorazde: The War in Eastern Bosnia 1992-1995 by Joe Sacco, Christopher Hitchens (Introduction) (Paperback January 2002) Blood and Vengeance: One Family's Story of the War in Bosnia by Chuck Sudetic "There is a method to presenting the reality of war in [New York] Times style," writes Chuck Sudetic, "a restrictive method but a perfectly valid one just the same. It focuses mainly on institutions and political leaders and their duties and decisions, while leaving the common folk to exemplify trends, to serve as types: a fallen soldier, a screaming mother, a dead baby.... The method is described by various terms: detachment, disinterestedness, dispassion, distancing, and others with negative prefixes engineered to obliterate any relationship between observer and observed." Although Sudetic was able to maintain his detachment for the numerous stories he filed from the frontlines of the Bosnian war for the Times, it could not ultimately last. Blood and Vengeance examines the events leading up to the July 1995 genocidal massacre that took place in and around the town of Srebenica from the perspective of the Celik family (to whom the author is related by marriage). Sudetic ably blends the intimate chaos and terror of the Celiks' lives with broader historical and contemporary accounts that provide a fuller context for what happened. The people here are not types, but vividly portrayed individuals in whose lives the reader gradually becomes absorbed. This book ranks with Peter Maass's Love Thy Neighbor as one of the closestand most chillinglooks at the tumultuous events that shattered post-cold war Eastern Europe.

Mirror to History: Confronting War Crimes in Bosnia Bosnia .
A country of rich ethnic heritage, ruled over time by the Roman Empire, the Ottomans, and the Austro-Hungarians. The area was originally settled by the Illyrians, and later the Slavs. Throughout the middle ages, they were to adopt different religions and political allegiances. From the patchwork of different tribes that migrated into and influenced the region, three had by modern times attained the greatest influence: the Orthodox Serbian peoples, the Catholic Croatians, and Bosnian Muslims. None these groups claim a clear majority in modern Bosnia.
After the collapse of communism, nationalist politics unleashed the darkest terror to engulf a European country since WWII. The modern Yugoslavian traditions of tolerance and mixed marriages gave way to greed for power and war crimes of the worst sort.
The 1992 descent into nationalist war resulted in expulsions, concentration camp detentions, and the destruction of religious and cultural heritage, policies commonly known as ethnic cleansing. The disturbances over a quarter of a million dead.
On the surface, modern Yugoslavia was relatively peaceful.
