Specialty: Panamanian geology, organic sedimentary deposits, quaternary history and paleobotany. COURSE DESCRIPTION The field course in carbonates is divided into two sections, dealing first with the several modern carbonate environments represented on this part of the high energy, microtidal Caribbean coast, and within the clear, warm waters of Chiriqui Lagoon. Upper shoreface to reef front transects of several types of shoreline are made, using snorkeling equipment. Illustrated lectures relate students' own observations to the various carbonate facies models now current. Laboratory exercises enable students to study physical and chemical attributes of modern carbonates such as primary porosity and permeability, dissolution and precipitation, early cementation, etc.. Students work in small groups during the first section of the course, and are responsible for preparing and presenting a group project to the class after 2 weeks. COURSE STRUCTURE Lectures There will be formal lectures during the first 2 weeks of the course - attendance and note taking mandatory and graded. During the second week, lectures will be interspersed with discussions in which ideas and practical problems will be dealt with. The final week there will be occupied with work on individual projects.

(2) Department of Biology, Laurentian University, Sudbury Ontario bglalonde@ouc.bc.ca The equilibrium theory of island biogeography proposes a balance between extinction and colonization to explain the general phenomenon whereby species diversity increases as a function of habitat area. This theory is frequently used as the conceptual basis for making habitat conservation and management decisions and is a major topic covered in any community ecology course. Consequently, a simple way of demonstrating the species-area phenomenon and its mechanistic basis during one university-level laboratory period has great pedagological value. We describe a simple laboratory exercise, using the community of cynipid gall-inducers associated with wild roses, which we developed to demonstrate species-area relationships. The process of sampling and data analysis can be accomplished in a single three hour period.

The course was delivered by WebCT. Extensive use was made of PowerPoint based on the illustrations available in the course text (Campbell et al). Students were given extra credit for taking part in small group discussion in WebCT. Classroom Assessment activities were constructed for each class. The positive impact of those activities was revealed in an associated research study. Assessment in the course was in large part on essays written in formal examinations. Essay questions were all derived directly from course and lecture objectives to align the teaching with the assessment. Marking was carried out with the help of TAs using the SOLO Taxonomy as a marking guide. The basis for the taxonomy was shared with the students and a worked example was available to them on the course web site.

Fall 2002 Welcome to Biosciences 124, a three-credit course in plant biology specifically designed for the non-science student. The goals and objects of the course are:
  • To gain a basic understanding of the processes through which plants function; To develop concepts concerning the factors leading to the great diversity among plants and the need to maintain this diversity; To understand the complex role of plants in the environment and in our society in order to make informed decisions
  • The course has CORE approval in the science/math area ONLY as a lab science when taken in conjunction with BSCI 125 (Laboratory in Plant Biology, 1 credit hour).
