T he I nstitute of E conomic B otany A Focus on Human Needs T he NYBG Institute of Economic Botany (IEB) was founded in 1981, to focus a portion of the Garden's research enterprise on applied botanical questions of great human concern. The field of economic botany, with its allied discipline ethnobotany, involves the study of the relationship between plants and people. Economic botanists pursue research projects on useful plants, from a variety of interdisciplinary perspectives. The IEB of The New York Botanical Garden comprises 28 scientists, staff (including adjuncts) and students, 7 interns, 7 volunteers, and over a dozen honorary research associates at other institutions around the world. Many of the IEB staff members reside outside the United States for long periods of time, because of the nature of their research. The projects of the IEB encompass seven principal activities, each supporting the primary mission of the IEB: understanding the relationship between plants and people.
  • Collecting and identifying plants, and gathering information on their uses through field research focused in the tropics. Studying natural resource management on regional and national levels.

and approximately 1 million pages of journal literature in the environmental sciences and reach back more than 130 years. In setting fees, JSTOR's fundamental aim is to match the contributions institutions make to the value they derive from participation. In the United States, institutions are classified into groups based on the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education. The Carnegie Classes "group American colleges and universities according to their missions," and thus offer an opportunity to relate fees to the degree to which an institution regards research as a fundamental aim. The Carnegie Classes are used to place institutions into one of five JSTOR fee classes ranging from Very Large to Very Small. There is no equivalent to the Carnegie Classification for grouping academic institutions outside of the United States. Nevertheless, just as we have done with the U.S. fee structure, we aim to match the contributions non-U.S. institutions make to the value they derive from participation. Through analysis of JSTOR usage and collecting patterns at participating libraries, we have developed a methodology for setting value-based fees for libraries around the world. Institutions are first placed into JSTOR classes ranging from Very Large to Very Small. Fee levels are then set taking into account the relative value of the JSTOR journal titles to the higher education community in the country as well as the local availability of fiscal and technological resources.
