Molecular Systematics , Second Edition. Sinauer Assoc., Massachusetts. This edited book has been widely used in the field of molecular systematics providing a comprehensive guide to the protocols, analyses, applications and limitations of the major methods used in the reconstruction of historical relationships based on molecular data. The second edition includes a unique chapter discussing (in detail) the methods currently available for actually reconstructing the phylogenies once the molecular data is in hand.
Chapters and Reviews Mable, B.K. 2001. Molecular Evolution: Methods. Encyclopedia of Life Sciences, MacMillan, London. This chapter provides an overview of some of the major techniques involved in the study of molecular evolution (DNA and protein sequencing, allozymes, fragment analyses, DNA hybridization). The printed and final on-line versions will not be available until April 2001 but there is an embryonic version that currently can be accessed (by subscription) at www.els.net

History of Systematic Botany in Australasia
Edited by P.S. Short.
Case bound, 326pp, ASBS, 1990. REDUCED TO CLEAR!
$10 + $10 postage
For all those people interested in the 1988 ASBS symposium in Melbourne, here are the proceedings. It is a very nicely presented volume, containing 36 papers on: the botanical exploration of our region; the role of horticulturalists, collectors and artists in the early documentation of the flora; the renowned (Mueller, Cunningham), and those whose contribution is sometimes overlooked (Buchanan, Wilhelmi). The Contents, Preface and an article by J.H. Willis are available here.
Evolution of the Flora and Fauna of Arid Australia
Edited by W.R. Barker and P.J.M. Greenslade.
Soft cover, 392 pp, ASBS and ANZAAS, 1982.
$20 + $5 postage. This collection of more than 40 papers will be of interest to all concerned with Australia's dry inland or the evolutionary history of its flora and fauna. In addition, it should appeal to those involved in the biology of arid lands outside Australia and in evolutionary studies as well. The first of six sections provides an ecological and historical background. Subjects covered are vegetation, soils, geomorphology, new material on the development of aridity in Australia, the Cainozoic flora and vertebrate fauna of the arid zone, the role of climatic factors in determining patterns of distribution and diversity, including a new biological approach to the classification of Australian climatic environments, and a review of previous studies of the biogeography of arid Australia.
