Jeremy isn't driving a new Mercedes or sporting a $60 million Nike contract like Tiger. "I am amazed," said Jeremy, "at the people who ask for my autograph" Jeremy didn't disappoint the dozens of fans... who cheered him on as he shot yet another 300 game to add some excitement to the event. "The idea that we can all have such a great time bowling while raising thousands of dollars for a worthy cause like leukemia research gives me a really great feeling,"
October 21, 1997 Collegiate bowler registers "firsts" by Jan Leasure What Jeremy may not realize is that the tremendous visibility that he received under the spotlight of bowling the "900" has reflected in a most unique and positive way for the sport of bowling itself. Jeremy may unknowingly end up being the single-most positive catalyst that helps shine new respect on a sport that has traditionally fought for it's place to be viewed as more than a pizza and beer recreation. "I am amazed," said Jeremy, "at the people who ask for my autograph whenever I walk into a bowling center. It warms my heart when junior bowlers ask me questions about bowling and tell me that they would like to bowl as well as I do. I understand because I still feel this way about the pros that I admire like Amletto Monacelli. I almost couldn't believe it myself when I had the honor of conducting a junior bowling clinic with Amletto just prior to the Lima Ohio Regional in September at a local middle school. For me this was a dream come true."

USA Bowling, YABA join efforts of fitness program
December 1998
U SA Bowling and YABA have joined forces to back the Mayors' Olympikids for Fitness Program, an exciting new initiative to get youths active in sports and encourage physical activity throughout their lives. The program is a joint program of the United States Olympic Committee (USOC) and the U.S. Conference of Mayors. It stresses many of the same goals as USA Bowling and YABA. Deedee Corradini, Salt Lake City mayor and U.S. Conference of Mayors president, is working with USOC to promote fitness and the Olympic movement to America's youth. The program's intent is to get children exercising, encourage family fitness activities and create a program which can be implemented in schools and neighborhoods in any U.S. city. They also hope children take responsibility for their lifelong fitness habits and ensure they reach their highest potential. "YABA is proud to join USA Bowling and America's mayors to promote this important program," said YABA Executive Director Jim Zebehazy. "The physical well-being of our youths is vital not only for the future of organized bowling, but for the future of our country."

FROM THE DESK OF THE PRESIDENT... PRESIDENT'S MONTHLY REPORT
President's meeting with the IOC President, Dr. Jacques Rogge
April 25, 2002
: This will be the first in a series of articles to follow. It is planned to be monthly but would be flexible depending on the availability of "you-are-the-first-to-know" news. In the latest of our longstanding and wide ranging efforts to be inducted as a medal sport in the Olympic Games, a small delegation of us from the FIQ and the WTBA (Mr Jerry Koenig, the President of FIQ, Mr. Ad Ophelders, the President of the European Tenpin Bowling Federation (ETBF), Mrs. Vivien Fung, the President of the Asian Bowling Federation (ABF) and I) met with the President of the IOC Dr. Jacques Rogge at his office in Laussane, Switzerland on the 9th of April with Mr Gilbert Felli, the Executive Director of the IOC, in attendance. It was a very revealing meeting, with Dr Rogge being his usual friendly, frank and forthright self. There were no political side-steppings. His bedside manners did not desert him. Indeed it was in full flow. He began with "You have the floor", much like taking a history from his patients. After listening intently to our polite and well versed but guarded revelations on why we had come, he began, doctor fashion, with the aetiology of the 2 Commissions he had set up, viz. the Olympic Games Programme Commission and the Olympic Games Study Commission, the dates of their meetings, their mandates, the investigations that are being undertaken by his Sports Department, the possible diagnoses that would eventually ensue from the reports of the commissions, before making the startling revelation that: No new Sport would get on the Olympic programme unless one or more of those already on the programme as a medal sport, are first removed.

Bo-Fish Bowling News the Positive Source for Bowling Worldwide Wright In The Heart Of Texas
by Don Wright September I have written several columns on my feelings about bowling and the Olympics. I would have loved for bowling to be a medal sport in the Olympics. It meets all the necessary International Olympic Committee rules - The IOC insists that the sport be played on all five continents; played in at least 75 countries and is played by both men and women. Bowling does all of that. In fact, bowling could be a sport in which the men and women compete equally. At the present time equestrian is the only sport to have that. See you on the lanes.

Bowling, The Wright Way - September 9, 2002
by Don Wright Olympics and Other Musings I have written several columns on my feelings about bowling and the Olympics. If bowling were to make the Olympics I would have wanted to see amateur bowlers competing, not Parker Bohn III, Walter Ray Williams, or Pete Weber. It aggravates me to no end to see our professional basketball players dominate the sport and humiliate the players at the Olympic level. But, it was an American amateur basketball team losing in the games that changed the rules and allowed for professional athletes to compete. American's try to justify professional athletes by saying that foreign National teams are really professionals. That's a weak argument at best. However, don't look for bowling in the Olympics in the near future and I would guess, ever.

Bowling
Canadian Special Olympics recognizes both 5-Pin and 10-Pin Bowling as Official Sports, and hosts these at National Games. Nova Scotia is severely limited in the number of 5-Pin facilities across the Province, and the virtual non-existence of 10-Pin alleys. The majority of bowling facilities in Nova Scotia are "Candlepin" and as such, our athletes often train and compete in this discipline. Where possible, Nova Scotia Special Olympics encourages athletes to train and compete in 5-Pin facilities. In each year preceding a National Summer Games, all athletes will compete in an official 5-Pin facility, if they wish to be considered for advancement. As with all Special Olympic sports, we strongly encourage our coaches to obtain NCCP Certification, and strive to deliver the best quality sport programs.

Let's not be smug. Bowling has more than its share of sports miscreants. Consider the sandbaggers who plague our handicap and divisionalized tournaments. What about the bowling proprietors who intentionally aid these creepy characters with "accommodating" lane conditions.
