History
Wheelchair athletics has its roots in World War II. Before then, rehabilitation for any type of spinal cord injury was rare with fewer than one person in five surviving more than three years. World War II, responsible for sending many thousands to veteran's hospitals as paraplegics, quadriplegics, or amputees produced an awareness that more than medicine was needed to return some semblance of normalcy to, and extend the lives of, these men. A form of rehabilitative therapy was required that was more than just developing muscle tone from the exercise apparatus positioned above their bed. People whose body image and self-worth were devastated by their condition needed mental and physical therapy to restore a positive quality of life attitude. A difficult challenge, especially when it is realized there is no known cure for paralysis. In this chasm, athletics for wheelchair users was born. Wheelchair racing and wheelchair basketball preceded wheelchair bowling as a form of rehabilitative therapy. All succeeded in providing physical and emotional exercise. Social contact was stimulated.

IOC Team Inspects Facilities, Venues and Communities in Beijing
IOC Team Inspects Facilities, Venues and Communities in Beijing On a foggy Thursday, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) inspectors set their feet to the proposed venue for 2008 Olympic Games women's soccer final and tried their skills on a world record-breaking bowling alley in Beijing , which is bidding for hosting the 2008 Games.
The IOC inspectors also visited a prestigious high school and listened to "green angels" singing about making their hometown city clean and beautiful.
After spending the whole morning hearing presentations by Beijing's Olympic bid campaigners, the IOC team came to Beijing's largest waste-water processing facility "Gaobeidian Sewage Treatment Center". The visitors watched with intense interest goldfishes swimming in a glass bowl filled with water already treated in the center. The Gaobeidian facility is a major environment project with a daily processing capacity of 1 million cubic meters, 40 percent of the Chinese capital's total sewage discharge. The plant undertakes waste-water treatment covering a total area of 9,661 hectares, ranging from the downtown section to the eastern suburb to serve a population of more than 2.4 million.

Issue 44 November 2nd thru Novemver 8th 1998, Vol VIII I take part in championships on my own expense." Wa'el Hussein 'Amer, 30, is fond of bowling. He played this game for many years, and is looking forward for it to become popular in Yemen. Wa'el represented Yemen in the International Bowling Championship (1997) held in Cairo, paying wholly for himself.
Yemen Times met this young man to know his story with this game, which is new in the Yemeni spots fields. Q: When and where did you start playing the game?
A:
I started playing bowling while studying in Jordan in 1987. My level improved noticeably, with continuous training, after participation in the Jordanian University championship (1988). After graduation, I returned back to Yemen and stopped playing bowling, because of the lack of bowling facilities. During my travels abroad, I participated in some championships held in Amman and Cairo. Q: Do you wish to make bowling more popular in Yemen?
A:
Yes, this is my ambition. Bowling is an interesting, commercially profitable game, but the cost of a bowling alley is pretty high.
In the year 2000, bowling will be included in the international Olympic games. I presented a project for establishing a bowling center to the Yemen Olympic Committee and the Ministry of Youth and Sports.

South China's Guangdong Province have set a target of retaining the top rank at the gold medal tally at the 2nd Non-Olympic Sports National Games slated to open on Saturday in Mianyang, of southwest China's Sichuan Province.
Guangdong scored a shining triple by top-ranking for the total gold medal, medal tally and team standings at the inaugural Games held two years ago in Ningbo of east China's Zhejiang Province.
This year Guangdong are determined to secure a second ranking while trying to defend their number one place, by winning a total of 28 gold medals. They are to face 53 other delegations from across the country.
A total of 6,000 athletes and coaches are expected to be in Mianyang, which is 120 kilometers northeast of Chengdu, Sichuan's provincial capital.

Benched at Bowling Green
More victims of Title IX. n Mother's Day this Sunday, Debra Downey won't be relaxing at home with her family. Instead, she'll be on the campus of Bowling Green State University, wearing a " Save BG Track " T-shirt, handing out buttons, and otherwise getting her message out by lobbying parents of graduates and alumni.
"From the look on his face I originally thought someone had died," Mrs. Downey recalls of the night of March 19, when her junior son, Drew, arrived home from school to tell his parents that his track team was being cut. In late March, Bowling Green State University announced that it would eliminate men's tennis, track, and swimming and diving. That's 16 scholarships cut and 55 student athletes affected. In recent years, Bowling Green has also eliminated men's wrestling and lacrosse. Division I hockey, football, and tennis all cost major money, Bowling Green explains, and so they just can't afford all their teams. But that's the thing about track — and what makes it such an odd sport to cut. As Eric Peterson, father of a senior on the track team — and who, while living in Kansas City a few years ago, helped run an inner-city summer program for track — points out: "It would cost the university very little to continue to support track." You don't
