For all of the major sports covered by NBC each of these Olympics, IDS provided state-of-the-art broadcast interface systems. These systems simultaneously process scoring and timing information from the official results system and from the official timing system. This data was made available instantly on the NBC graphics systems for broadcast and was also databased for later access. Due to the time difference between Sydney Australia and the United States at the Summer Olympics, NBC produced a large amount of broadcast material on tape. This required an interface system that let NBC go back to a completed event and access information at any point in time during the event. The IDS broadcast interface used the official results to create an event database. This gave NBC the flexibility to edit previously recorded events and insert graphics as if they were receiving live data.

    Sports Factor

    With Amanda Smith
    Summary:

What’s hot and what’s not when it comes to which sports are in or out of the Olympic Games?
A recent report by the Programme Commission of the International Olympic Committee puts baseball, softball and modern pentathlon on the chopping block. The new favourites are golf and rugby.
So how are these decisions made – especially when no sport wants to be thrown out of the Olympics, and plenty of others reckon it’s their turn to be on the O-List? Details or Transcript: Amanda Smith: We’re starting The Sports Factor this morning with a question: What do the following sports have in common: cricket, croquet, motor-boating, polo and tug-of-war? MUSIC: ‘Time to Say Goodbye’ Amanda Smith: Yes, they’re all sports that at one time have been part of the Olympic Games, but that got the chop. Other discontinued Olympic events include live pigeon shooting, rope-climbing, an obstacle race and something called the plunge for distance, in swimming. So if you’re one of those people who thinks synchronised swimming is a strange and silly thing to have in the Olympics, well, there’ve been plenty of others in the past that you could put in that category as well. Now, late last week, the Programme Commission of the International Olympic Committee released a report with its recommendations for what sports it wants in, and out, of future Olympic Games, for Beijing and beyond. On the out-list: modern pentathlon, which has been in a shaky position for a while. The more surprising exclusions though are baseball, and softball. And those favoured for inclusion: golf and rugby. They’ve been recommended ahead of a long list of other Olympic aspirants, including squash, surfing, dance sport, bowling and chess.

    Bowler goes to extremes
Kim Adler climbs steep sandstone cliffs. She rides a mountain bike on twisty desert trails. She glides on her snowboard through deep Colorado powder. For Adler, the 1991 tour rookie of the year and 15th on the all-time money list with $500,000 in winnings, adventure sports are very compatible with big-league bowling. ''Cross-training clears my mind and sharpens my mental focus,'' she says. ''It keeps me fresh.'' Staying fresh is important on the 23-tournament women's pro tour, where bowling is intensely physical. Attacking the pins ''It takes a long time to get good at this sport,'' says Adler, who recently turned 31. ''Many pro bowlers' careers don't peak until their late 30s. To last that long, to take the pounding, you have to be an athlete.'' To that end, Adler and her husband, Tommy, have chosen an extreme approach. Gear and groceries They cruise the tour in an RV loaded down with mountain bikes, surfboards, snowboards, climbing gear and lots of healthy foods.
