Chicago Educator Jan/Feb 2003 Mustangs officially poised to become top bowling team By Charles C. Campbell Before the Illinois High School Association sanctioned boys bowling for state competition this year, Morgan Park's boys bowling team already laid claim to state supremacy. Last year, the Mustangs convincingly won the Public League title and went on to beat 20 teams Downstate in an unofficial state tournament. Despite the sport's lacking official recognition, the competition was still fierce. This year, the Mustangs are continuing their winning ways. In their first state-sanctioned season, Morgan Park boys finished with a perfect 49-0 sectional record. Already, Morgan Park is positioning itself in the state annals of bowling history as the premiere team in Illinois. They topped off the regular season by winning their consecutive sectional and city championships, en route to a possible state championship. "Even though we did not get an automatic berth into state competition this year after winning city, it's still feels good to be the best in the Public League," said long-time assistant coach James Carraway. "We don't get a lot of time to enjoy the city victory, because we have to still fight to make to state competition. So it was a different kind of joy for us." In the Public League championship held Jan. 22 at Waveland Bowl, Morgan Park outscored everyone with a series high 2887. Whitney Young came in second with 2697 points, while Chicago Vocational clinched third place with a score of 2506.

Despite inexperience, Bowling team strives for championship By Corey Davis
Echo Staff Writer The N.C. Central University women’s bowling team may not get the publicity of other sports teams, but the team is aspiring to finish on top. Head coach Lin Stewart, has confidence his women’s team has what it takes to win the CIAA championship. But he knows it’s going to take patience and dedication from his players.“I feel we have the team to take it all,” said Stewart. “It’s just a matter of performing.” The women’s bowling team knows that when they face Division 1-A schools they are at a disadvantage. The team does not have the facilities or the recruiting power as other schools such as Duke or UNC. But they have a successful record so far. Stewart knows that success often depends on that single player who can step up and lead in critical situations. According to Stewart said that player is his captain NeClea Coleman. “I feel NeClea is probably my best bowler. She’s had the most experience of all the bowlers when we started. I feel she is a player who leads by example.”

Born:
October 29, 1956, Evergreen Park, IL
Personal:
My first sport love is skydiving. I made my first jump March 14, 1981 at Perris Valley Paracenter, Perris, CA. Almost seventeen years and 3500 jumps later, it's hard to believe I only wanted to do one jump, especially since at one time I was too scared to jump . I played softball and basketball in high school, tennis as a undergraduate and was on the Purdue bowling team while I was working on my Masters degree. Now, I cross train in bowling and weight lifting and, of course, jump nearly every weekend. Sports and competition provide me with experiences that build my self confidence and muscles. I just plain feel good after playing sports. My body breathes easier and is more relaxed after a bike ride to work, bowling or skydive. I'm more alert during the day and sleep better at night. I hope my future holds these events for me: do 10 chin-ups by my 42nd birthday next October (I can do 2 now), compete on an all woman skydiving team, be part of a World Record, bowl a 600 series and bench press my weight. I'd like an athletic shoe named after me, called the Meyer Flyer (he he he).
