Ireland's Olympic History
J.J. Keane, then one of Ireland's leading sports administrators was elected to the International Olympic Committee in 1922 and it is now generally accepted that the Irish Olympic Council as t was known at the outset, came into existence in 1923 but due to the loss of the minutes of the early meetings of the Council, the exact date is now not known. Ireland was given formal recognition as an independent nation in the Olympic Movement at the IOC Session in Paris in 1924 and it was at the Paris Games that Ireland made its first appearance in an Olympic Games as an independent nation.

Potted History Some early history about women and the Olympics
  • Married women were barred from the Ancient Olympic Games but prostitutes or virgins were allowed to spectate. Kallipateria was the first female Olympic boxing coach in 440 BC. The first female Olympic champion was a Spartan princess called Kynisca, in 392 BC. She was also the first woman to become a champion horse trainer when her horses and chariot competed and won in the Ancient Olympic Games. Women had their own athletic games of Hera from about 1000 BC. Women were originally the prizes Ballooning, croquet and golf (1900) were once Olympic events in which women competed. Old programmes of the Paris Exposition show that women also participated in ballooning, croquet, equestrianism, golf, tennis and yachting. Bearing this in mind, we take the view that all women who took part in these sports were Olympians.

The Augusta Recreation and Parks Department, with assistance from area law enforcement agencies, implemented the Augusta Boxing Association/ Augusta Police Athletic League (P.A.L.) in an effort to curtail drug abuse and crime among young adults and children. This program uses sports, specifically boxing, as a tool to attract young people who have been given the opportunity to build self confidence, develop self discipline, learn to function as a team, develop good sportsmanship and experience the rewards of always striving to do their best. In its 20 plus year history, several hundred children and young adults have benefited from their participation in the Augusta Boxing Association. The program is preventative in nature as opposed to rehabilitative, with its participants coming from the entire Central Savanna River Area (CSRA). The majority of these children have had no prior contact with the court system. We are able to go beyond the athletic aspects of the program and provide tutoring and drug counseling, take them on field trips and require attendance at a variety of educational programs. Through the boxing tournaments, many of our participants have had the opportunity to travel extensively in the United States and abroad. Several members of our team have qualified to represent the United States Olympic Boxing Association and have competed in locations such as Russia, Germany, Sweden, Poland and England. Jacob Hudson, currently ranked # 1 in the United States, one of our participants, represented the U.S.A in the 1998 Goodwill Games in New York, New York. We are an official affiliate of USA Boxing, the Olympic Authority. We are also a Chapter Member of the National Police Athletice League.

How The Olympic Games Began
Nearly 3,000 years of Olympic history
The Olympics first started nearly 3,000 years ago in Ancient Greece . The ancient Greek civilization enjoyed many sports—including running, boxing and wrestling—because they believed physical activity and competition were very important. Every Greek boy was expected to participate in sports , because the Greeks believed the skills they learned in sports would make them better warriors.
In honour of Zeus
The ancient Greeks also believed religion was very important. Zeus was their greatest god. The ancient Greeks built a shrine to honour Zeus in the Valley of Olympia. Greeks gathered at the shrine to play their favourite sports as part of their religious ceremonies.
In 776 B.C. the ancient Greeks first recorded the results from their sporting events held in honour of Zeus. Every four years after that these Games were held, and because they took place in the Valley of Olympia , they became known as the Olympic Games

The Olympic Games as we know them have been around for over 100 years. But did you know that the Games go back to a tradition that began in the eighth century B.C.? This article picks up where Part I left off. Read on to find out about the end of the original Olympic Games, and how they came back, better than ever, after 1,500 years!
This week:
The Games Are Banned
After Rome conquered Greece in 146 B.C., the Olympics diminished in importance and religious significance. Many athletes became interested only in winning money. In A.D. 393, the Emperor Theodosius I banned the Games because they had declined in quality. Over time, people forgot about the Olympics, and no Games were held for more than 1,500 years. Then, in 1875, a group of German archaeologists came upon the ruins of the Stadium of Olympia. Seeing the ruins inspired Baron Pierre de Coubertin, a French educator, to organize a modern international Olympics. He believed that individuals needed to test their athletic skills against others.

"A DREAM BECAME A REALITY"
In 1977, a Chicago businessman named George Randazzo decided to raise money for a struggling local Catholic youth program. The results were so overwhelming that another local businessman, the late cheese “czar”, Don Ponte, encouraged Randazzo to start a hall of fame to honor all Italian-American athletes. One year later, the National Italian American Sports Hall of Fame (NIASHF), held its first banquet, honoring Lou Ambers, Eddie Arcaro, Charlie Trippi, Gino Marchetti, Dom DiMaggio, and the famous “Yankee Clipper” Joe DiMaggio; also Mrs. Vince Lombardi accepted the posthumous induction of her late husband Coach Vince Lombardi.

As a sport fighting has been around for thousands of years where it first arose in parts of Africa and Egypt before spreading to parts of Southern Europe. The Ancient Greeks, who held the belief that fighting was a game played by the Gods on Olympus, made fighting a part of the Olympic Games in 688BC. The Romans The Romans had a keen interest in the sport and fighting soon became a common spectator sport. In order for the fighters to protect themselves against their opponents they wrapped leather thongs around their fists. Eventually harder leather was used and the thong soon became a weapon. The Romans even introduced metal studs to the thongs to make the cestus which then led to a more sinister weapon called the myrmex (‘limb piercer’).

By Robert Cassidy W HEN FIDEL CASTRO banned professional sports from Cuba in 1962, the dreams of thousands of fighters died along with the notion that El Presidente would establish a democratic government. In the decade that preceded Castro's revolution, many world-class fighters came from Cuba. Who knows how many more would have emerged if not for the ban.
The legendary Teofilo Stevenson in action at the 1976 Olympics.. As the revolution triumphed and Communism took hold of the island, new dreams were being sold to fighters. He will feel a warm summer breeze or hear the ocean gently wash up on the sand, and suddenly it brings him home. Even after four decades, the beauty of his homeland remains vivid. The memories are both pleasant and painful, as they send him back to places and faces he wishes to see. But he knows that some wishes aren't meant to come true.
The Great Kid Gavilan, at right, attends a Ring 8 awards ceremony in New York with Beau Jack. "I miss Cuba very much," he said. "I miss the family and friends I left behind. I miss the beaches, the beautiful people, the view of Malecon [Havana's busiest street]. I miss the Cuba of 42 years ago." Fernandez was among a few dozen professional fighters who left Cuba after Fidel Castro's rise to power. The lot included Luis Rodriguez, Benny Paret, Isaac Logart, Doug Vaillant, Sugar Ramos, Jose Legra and Jose Napoles. They represent the finest and until some recent defections - the last generation of pro boxers the island nation has produced. There had been great Cuban fighters before and a spate of great Olympic champs since, but never was boxing as saturated with Cuban talent as it was in the early to late 1960s. The legacy of those men is measured by the success they achieved in the ring, but also by the sacrifices and hardships they endured by the sudden, and permanent, separation from family, friends and the country of their birth.

Fist-fighting as a sport stretches back into the early reaches of human history. Early forms of boxing took place 6,000 years ago in what is currently Ethiopia, and it is believed to have spread from there to Egypt, where depictions can be found on the walls of ancient tombs. It was introduced in the ancient Olympic games in 688 BC. The Greeks wrapped heavy leather strips around their hands and fists and fought without a break until one competitor was beaten unconscious or raised his hand in surrender. The Romans turned boxing into a blood sport. In a typically Roman twist, the leather wraps were studded with nails for maximum carnage and competitors often lost their lives or were permanently maimed.

    Development of Amateur Boxing
Marquis John Szolto Douglas, the developer of the "Queensberry" Rules, initiated the first amateur boxing competitions in 1867. In 1880 the Amateur Boxing Association (ABA) was founded and since 1881 the first regular championships had been arranged among amateurs. In 1888 in the USA the Amateur Sporting Union (AAU) was founded and since then annual national championships among amateurs had been conducted.
In 1926 the "Chicago Tribune" paper arranged the "Golden Gloves" amateur competitions with the status of national championship, which were competing with bouts arranged by AAU. The law forbidding the AAU to control more than one Olympic kind of sport was passed in 1978 in the USA. That resulted in the USA Amateur Boxing Federation (USA/ABF) establishment, which nowadays takes control over the American amateur boxing. The amateur boxing quickly spread out in all countries worldwide. That resulted in the arrangement of international tournaments, held every year, every two years, or as in the Olympic games case, every four years. European Games, Commonwealth Games, Pan-American Games, All-African Championships, World Military Games are among internationally recognized competitions among amateur boxers.
All amateur competitions are conducted under the control of Association Internationale de Boxe Amateur - AIBA), established in 1946 with its headquarters in London.

Boxing's rich Olympic history didn't begin until the 1904 Games because the 1896 Games organisers ruled it out as "ungentlemanly, dangerous and practised by the dregs of the population". However, it has gone on to be associated with many great names, and is hailed by some as the last of the “warrior” sports. Olympic-style "amateur" boxing differs from its more high profile "professional" cousin in several ways: competitors must wear protective headgear, referees are more likely to stop a bout if a boxer is taking heavy punishment, and bouts consist of fewer "rounds". Previously there were three three-minute rounds with a minute interval between each. A 1998 ruling, applying to all amateur competition, means that bouts at the Sydney Games will be run as four two-minute rounds, with a minute's break between each.

Troubled times for boxing at Sydney Games By PAUL MULVEY
8:29PM, Oct 01 Felix Savon made history, the Australians made fools of themselves and, finally, officials made a mockery of Olympic boxing. Amateur boxing's seedy image had regained some cleanliness until the last day of the Games when Russian referee Stanislav Kir sanov was banned for four years. The ban came after the US team claimed he had robbed featherweight Ricardo Juarez of what would have been its only gold. Instead, the US left without an Olympic boxing gold for the first time since 1948 while Savon led the Cuban charge to top the medal table with four gold. Although Kirsanov was deemed biased enough to be banned, the International Amateur Boxing Association upheld the fight's result and retained Bekzat Sattarkhanov as one of two gold medallists from Kazakhstan.
