The Olympic Games were held every four years for more than 1,000 years, until a.d. 393, when a Roman emperor stopped them.
Some Modern Olympic Firsts The first modern Olympic Games were held in Athens, Greece. A total of 312 athletes from 13 nations participated in nine sports. Women competed in the Olympic Games for the first time. For the first time, medals were awarded to the first three people to finish each event The Olympic flag was raised for the first time, and the Olympic oath was introduced. The five interlaced rings of the flag represent: Africa, America, Europe, Asia, and Australia. The first Winter Olympics, featuring skiing and skating events, were held. The Olympic flame was introduced at the Olympic Games. A relay of runners carries a torch with the flame from Olympia, Greece, to the site of each Olympics. Starting with the 1994 Winter Olympics, the winter and summer Games have been held two years apart, instead of in the same year.

The State and Sports . Sport in Turkey is being encouraged and supported by the state and sports clubs are given financial aid. The main targets of the sports policy of the state are to increase the number of athletes, to attain superior successes at international sports competitions, to prepare suitable sports environment for encouraging and providing for every individual at every age to engage in sports activities. Large sports facilities and investments in Turkey are realized by the state to a great extent. However, an important increase in the number of sports facilities of sports clubs and private organizations can be mentioned with the start of the development of the perception of sponsorship and marketing of sports in recent years. Of the total 2,574 sport facilities in Turkey, 261 belong to the private sector. Galatasaray Football Team, the Champion of 1999-2000 season UEFA Cup. The Directorate General of Youth and Sports.

Amateur Boxing Worldwide
I think that the long-term future of women's boxing depends on amateur boxing being accepted as a challenging sport for young women. Women's amateur boxing faces a crossfire of political correctness aimed both for and against it. It has become fashionable in many countries to support women's sports in general, but at the same time many are also reluctant to encourage boxing. Some have vocal movements attempting to ban the sport, considering it unsafe and uncivilized. Women's boxing also must deal with the predictable male chauvinism ("women take gym space and trainers' time away from male boxers, who are more deserving ..."). It also faces some genuine concerns about the safety of female participants in a dangerous sport. But instead of using these concerns as a wedge to keep women out of the ring, I hope they can be channeled into making boxing safer for participants of both genders. I know it's dangerous ... but so are sky diving, show jumping, horse racing .. and we don't hear about banning those sports, or women in them, because of fears that we will be hurt. Properly supervised amateur boxing can be a great way to instill self-confidence and encourage physical fitness and self-discipline in young women, as out male counterparts have known for a long time!

  • By Pamela Rice Hahn
It's almost time for Olympic Fever. The kids will barely be back in school when from September 15 to October 1, 2000, most of us will be glued to our television sets, watching the games taking place in Sydney, Australia.
The 2000 Summer Olympic Competition events fall within the following categories:
  • Featured Competition: Modern Pentathlon
    Debut Sport: Trampoline
    Individual: Men Only
    Individual: Women Only
Team Events: Men Only Team Events: Women Only Team Events: Men and Women Equestrian Debut Sport: Triathlon Featured Competition: Rowing
  • Featured Competition: Modern Pentathlon This event isn't for slackers. It also helps if you're a morning person, too. Competition starts at 5:30 A.M. with a pistol shoot at a bull's-eye target 10 meters away. After that, there's the dueling and fencing for "first blood," where a single touch wins. Then it's on to the pool, where competitors swim a 200-meter sprint; stroke style is each competitor's choice. Without even taking time to dry off, competitors head to the equestrian arena where they each coax an unfamiliar horse around and over a course of fences. Then, after "resting" atop that horse for a bit, there's a final, two-mile cross-country run. The entire competition takes about 12 hours.

Referee Stanislav Kirsanov (centre) has been suspended
The Olympic boxing competition has been cleared of claims of corruption - despite two referees being suspended at Sydney. The International Amateur Boxing Association found no evidence of corruption at the Games, AIBA general secretary Loring Baker revealed. Yugoslav Sreten Jabucanin and Russian Stanislav Kirsanov were both banned for four years following debatable decisions in favour of fighters from Kazakhstan. Baker says that the federation had found no evidence of corruption but would welcome any proof of wrongdoing. "If anyone has proof of such things, we'd love to have it, against anyone, myself included," Baker said. "I'm sure any official would be removed if we had proof." Protested The US team protested at the handling of the featherweight final in which Bekzat Sattarkhanov posted a 22-14 points win over US world champion Ricardo Juarez, which was officiated by Kirsanov. Kirsanov was immediately suspended, but the result was allowed to stand and Sattarkhanov kept the gold medal for Kazakhstan.

    Scoring
Olympic-style boxing is vastly different than professional boxing. The scoring system in Olympic boxing awards one point to the fighter when he can connect with a punch and move away before his opponent can do the same. To count, a punch has to be delivered by the white part of the glove, which covers the knuckles. All legal blows are scored equally. Moves like pushing or pinning an opponent against the ropes, which are allowed in professional boxing, are not permitted in Olympic boxing. Competition
Olympic boxing matches, or "bouts," consist of three three-minute rounds. Five judges score the bout individually. In the case of a tie, judges drop the highest and lowest scores. If the score is still tied, a five-member jury chooses the winner based on a combination of skill and style.

Cuban Boxing Federation cites 'technical difficulties'
    Associated Press
SAN JOSE, Calif. The eight-man Cuban boxing team has withdrawn from the Titan Games, which begin next week. The Cuban Boxing Federation notified the U.S. Olympic Committee last week that "due to technical difficulties within our organization, we will not be able to attend.'' Because of the late cancellation by Cuba, USA Boxing and USOC officials were unable to bring in another international team on such short notice. Cuba still is expected to send competitors in weightlifting and wrestling. "It's unfortunate that the Cuban boxing team chose not to fulfill their commitment of competing at the Titan Games,'' said USOC official Jim Scherr. "The event will be a great test for U.S. athletes as they are busy preparing for this year's Pan American Games and the 2004 Olympic Games. "It is unfortunate our young U.S. boxing team won't have the chance to face Cuba. ''

The 2003 Titan Games will take us back to a simpler time; a competition stripped of such glamour sports as swimming, basketball and gymnastics, and focused on combative sports steeped in Olympic history and teeming with intriguing and flamboyant personalities. Add in a circus-like element of four simultaneous competitions plus the lure of the world's best, and what you have stuffed into the Event Center at San Jose State University is positively Titanesque.
Played out over three days, Feb. 13-15, the Titan Games are Cupid's antithesis as there will be no love lost between combatants battling for over $80,000 in prize money and for the title of Ultimate Titan. The "Road To Athens" for America's elite boxers, fencers, shot putters, wrestlers, weightlifters and judo, taekwondo and karate athletes matches them up with the world's powers in each of these respective sports.
The female titans of this event are sure to be a marquee attraction. Led by 2000 Olympic weightlifting bronze medalist Haworth, all but two (boxing and shot put) of the eight sports on display will have female competitors. Two women wrestlers will compete as well, and their Road to Athens is the sport's first as their event wasn't added to the Olympic program until after the 2000 Games in Sydney.
