Star-Bulletin It finally can be said. Brian Viloria has made his breakthrough, and is on his way to becoming the first Olympic boxer from this state since 1956. In fact, if the Olympic final in the light flyweight or flyweight divisions were held tomorrow in Sydney, Viloria would be the gold medal favorite. The 18-year-old Waipahu High product laid claim to that distinction with a startling performance Thursday in Houston at the World Amateur Boxing Championships. He used a relentlessly aggressive strategy to overwhelm 1996 Olympic flyweight gold medalist Maikro Romero of Cuba in the light flyweight final. Romero, who had moved down from his Olympic weight class, was also the Goodwill Games gold medalist and the defending amateur world champion. He had eight years and a three-inch height advantage over the 5-foot-4 Viloria. "Brian is the best I've ever seen from Hawaii," said Eiichi Jumawan, a former two-time AAU champion.

Photograph by Maria Daniels, courtesy of The University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology The ancient Olympics were rather different from the modern Games. There were fewer events, and only free men who spoke Greek could compete, instead of athletes from any country. Also, the games were always held at Olympia instead of moving around to different sites every time.

One young Athenian nobleman defended his political reputation by mentioning how he entered seven chariots in the Olympic chariot-race. This high number of entries made both the aristocrat and Athens look very wealthy and powerful. Max: Most ignored fighter in boxing?
By Max Kellerman
Special to ESPN.com
Best ignored fighter in boxing? He's a featherweight. Undefeated in more than 40 fights, less than 30 years old. Hasn't fought a guy with anything close to a losing record in at least six years. Manuel Medina, who most people felt defeated Johnny Tapia in his last big fight and was ripped off, couldn't make it out of the seventh round with this guy. When Naseem Hamed was on top, he ducked this fighter ruthlessly. The following boxers are W's on his resume: Agapito Sanchez, Darryl Pinckney, Julian Wheeler, Freddy Cruz, Enrique Jupiter, Julio Gamboa, Robbie Peden. Some of them lasted the distance, others didn't. Most observers who watched Freddie Norwood fight this guy thought that Norwood lost. The judges (and, truth be told, this writer) were in the minority who felt otherwise. Okay, so I exaggerated. The boxer to whom I am referring is not officially undefeated but he easily could be. He officially lost to Norwood, who may have been the best 126-pounder in the world at the time. He also officially lost the first fight of his career, a disqualification due to an accidental headbutt in the first round of a fight he would have certainly won. So officially, Juan Manuel Marquez, the least talked-about, most-deserving top contender in boxing, is 40-2 (32). It is a record that has been compiled against fighters who are much more used to winning than to losing. At the time Marquez fought them, his 23 opponents since late-1996 have won almost six times the number of fights they've lost, a combined record of 608-128-18, for an average of 26-6-1. And, with the exception of the Norwood fight, every time Juan Manuel "Johnny Boy" to his camp stepped in the ring, he left no doubt about his superiority.

Max: Forrest now a question after Mayorga loss
By Max Kellerman
Special to ESPN.com
We knew Ricardo Mayorga could take a punch. Andrew "Six Heads" Lewis has never been accused of being a soft hitter, and Mayorga took his best shots. We also knew Mayorga could bomb. Going into his fight with welterweight champ Vernon Forrest, Mayorga had knocked out 23 of the 25 men he had beaten as a professional, including "Six Heads" in his most recent fight. As for Vernon Forrest, we knew he could fight. Going into his tussle with Mayorga, "The Viper" had beaten every one of the 35 professional fighters he had faced, including Ray Oliviera, Vince Phillips and even Shane Mosley twice! We also knew that while Forrest was not a one-punch, lights-out guy, he did have good power in both hands. We thought Vernon could take a good shot too. We had all the answers. Now we are left with questions.
