Besson brass instruments
Gustave Auguste Besson was a genius in the science of acoustics who in 1837, at the age of eighteen, produced and registered a new model cornet which was universally recognised as a revolutionary development superseding all previous instruments of its kind. The immediate success was tremendous and formed a prelude to a lifetime of work during which over fifty inventions relevant to wind instruments were accredited to him and patented.
Another great influence on wind instrument design was Adolphe Sax. Believed by many to be the greatest of all musical instrument innovators, he moved from Belgium to Paris in 1839. Perhaps the most famous of his achievements was the invention of the Saxhorn, the principle of which still prevails in the modern tuba.
, together with restructured and modernised sales and distribution departments to handle increased requirements. This new factory is an important step towards the future of modern instrument manufacturing.

Band Instruments
The phenomenal rise of the brass band in mid-nineteenth-century America can be better understood if we trace its antecedents and some of the technical developments that produced the type of brasswind family from soprano to bass that was the staple of our bands in the Civil War era. Boston Musical Gazette of July 25, 1838: Full well do I remember when I first heard the sound of a Clarinet French Horn and Bassoon : it was at a regimental muster, where I went with my father, as a spectator. It was reported all around the country for weeks beforehand, that the Boston Band was to be at muster, being hired at great expense by Capt. Taylor , the liberal and noble-spirited commander of the new troop of Cavalry. This band was all the topic of conversation among the boys, and many a luckless urchin had to do penance for listening to the wonderful stories of its performances, instead of attending to his task. I recollect that I was sent to mill, two miles distance, a day or two before the parade. I went whistling the Rogue's March all the way, which a famous old revolutionary fifer in our neighborhood had learnt to me. The crusty miller took off my bags; but I kept on whistling. "What the deuse ails ye, John, heh?" said he. "Capt. Dusty, ye goin to muster to hear the moosic?" I replied, and kept on whistling. "Hang your music! go to grass with your whistling!" cried the miller, as he shouldered my meal bags and carried them to the hopper. . . .

    INTRODUCTION
Brass bands played an important and interesting role in the community life of Australia during the latter half of the 19th Century and the first half of the 20th Century. The origins of the ensemble known as a brass band lie in the development of a range of valved conical brass instruments by Adolf Sax in Paris in the middle of the 19th Century. These instruments were melded into a saxhorn ensemble which became popular as a means of gaining employee loyalty in certain industries in the North of England. Interested readers should consult Trevor Herbert's useful collection of essays "The Brass Band Movement in the 19th and 20th Centuries", Open University Press, 1991, ISBN 0-335-09703-0. Many British migrants to Australia in the 19th Century were mine workers or industrial workers and they brought with them the brass band tradition. Brass bands prospered in Australia to an extent rivalling their popularity in Victorian and Edwardian England. Many mining towns and country areas had their own brass band which played an important role in entertainment and ceremonial occasions. In particular, the industrial centres such as Newcastle in NSW, and Geelong in Victoria, boasted of healthy and competitve brass bands of a very high calibre. With the advent of radio and amplified music, the public presence of brass bands has declined since their heyday at the turn of the Century. Band-stands from this era are often preserved as historical monuments, but unfortunately the Sunday afternoon brass band concert is now a rarity.

    94. Washington Cornett & Sackbutt Ensemble
Performs repertoire ranging from 15thcentury wind band music to sophisticated Baroque chamber works on early brass instruments.
    http://www.earlymusic.net/WCSE/
The Washington Cornett and Sackbutt Ensemble is dedicated to the performance of music that was written during the heyday of the cornett and sackbut (c.1475-1750). The ensemble performs a repertoire ranging from 15th-century wind band music to sophisticated baroque chamber works. In addition to its own concert schedule, the WCSE often adds its characteristic sound as support for choral groups or soloists in the DC area. The instruments played by the group, the cornett and sackbut, were very popular throughout Europe and the colonial Americas. The versatility of these instruments is demonstrated by the fact that they were used for outdoor entertainment and civic ceremonies as well as for religious services and chamber music.
