Architecture in the Slide Library
The Slide Library has extensive coverage of architecture starting with prehistoric architecture (e.g. Stonehenge) and classical architecture (Greek, Roman and Islamic). Pre C15th architecture is divided into countries, and Pre-C15th British architecture has a drawer of its own. (Look here for castles, abbeys and cathedrals.) C15th architecure is divided by countries. C16th architecture has a section by architect, e.g. Michelangelo, then a section of countries which is subdivided by place, e.g. Fontainbleau in France. C17th architecture is primarily in alphabetical order of C17th architects, e.g. Bernini, Inigo Jones and Christopher Wren. This is followed by a section on countries, again subdivided by place, e.g. St Peters in Rome under C17th Italian architecture. C18th architecture also starts with architects in alphabetical order, followed by a 'miscellaneous' section which includes bridges, churches, country houses, Gothic architecture and Greek Revival. Finally there is a section on the architecture of different countries. (Find the White House here under USA.) C20th architects have 3 drawers. Look here for Le Courbusier and Frank Lloyd Wright. The C20th 'miscellaneous' section fills a whole drawer and includes airports, bridges, ecclesiastical (including the Liverpool Cathedrals), cinemas, National Exhibition Centre at Birmingham, pubs, railways, roads, seaside architecture and steel houses.

Throughout the industry, the JavaBeans component architecture is the architecture of choice. More than 2,000,000 developers around the world have already embraced the Java TM platform. And no wonder. The Java platform has opened up an entirely new world of opportunities for building fully portable network-aware applications. Yet many developers are not yet sure how best to take advantage of the capabilities and benefits the Java platform delivers without sacrificing their existing investment in legacy applications. The Answer is the JavaBeans Component Architecture The JavaBeans component architecture is the platform-neutral architecture for the Java application environment. It's the ideal choice for developing or assembling network-aware solutions for heterogeneous hardware and operating system environmentswithin the enterprise or across the Internet. In fact, it's the only component architecture you should consider if you're developing for the Java platform.

Faculty taking part in the discussion were asked to identify pressing issues that could be addressed by marshaling the intellectual and creative resources of the school. Prominent among the concerns they raised were the increasing disparity between rich and poor, continued degradation of the environment, and the growing homogenization of the world. The places where we live, work, and conduct business are becoming more and more alike and more and more unlikable. People are put off by their environment and feel powerless to change it, the Envision participants observed. The rise of heritage tourism is a sign that we are desperate to find places of enduring value. Other specific issues that surfaced in the Envision discussion include the following: Sprawl and its effect on our quality of life The need to preserve and steward historic and cultural resources Imbalance in modes of transportation (i.e., over-dependence on automobiles) and its effect on the environment

Presentation
The Beginnings
Living Bridges was founded by three students in Paris in the winter of 1997/1998. It was cold out in the streets of the French capital (now that ´s a dramatic beginning!), when Italian Luca, English Nat and German Max were sitting around a bottle of French wine, thinking of what to do with their lives. The wine was cheap, the night got late, when suddenly a light filled the room of the old tavern and a brainchild was born: Living Bridges.
From the idea to the first conference, it took seven months of organising, conceptualising and philosophising. Here are some of the initial concepts. If you read closely, you can surely spot the influence of the red wine...
The Philosophical Aspect of Bridges
Our own Bridge
The Relevance of LB
In Living Bridges, we are trying to become aware of these opportunities, of our legacy and our responsibility. Maybe first it was curiosity. Then there was friendship and the desire to establish something long-lasting, a continuous crossroad and a meeting place. To invest in the future by living bridges together.
What has happened since
The first LB conference took place in Paris in July 1998. The streets were still buzzing (France had won the world cup, remember), when 40 LB pioneers arrived from all over Europe. Some had spend three days in a bus (!), others came from as far as Georgia and Portugal, and we all had one thing in common: we had no idea what was going to happen. What then happened was a wonderful week in Paris, where we all agreed that LB must go on.
