MIPS Technologies Launches System-Level Solution
To Increase Overall SOC Performance

Integrated Memory Controller and Other Features
That Accelerate SOC Design Cycle
MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., July 29, 2002 - The SOC-it system controller family is one more step in MIPS Technologies' strategy to offer system platforms that enable customers to get to market faster with higher performance system-level products. SOC-it system controllers feature an integrated memory controller optimized to take full advantage of the MIPS core in the SOC design. They also include multiple, high-bandwidth, dual-port interfaces to IP (intellectual property) blocks and modular bridges that provide access to industry-standard buses and customer IP. The result is a complete system-level solution that offers significantly higher performance than other standard system controllers, up to 100-percent memory bandwidth efficiency, and very low memory latency. "High-bandwidth features and functionality such as digital streaming media that enhance a user's experience are creating a huge demand for higher system performance in a broad range of embedded systems. The SOC-it controller family delivers that performance by giving our customers a very flexible, cost-effective, industry-standard solution for quickly moving very high volumes of data across the entire SOC platform," said Kevin Meyer, vice president of marketing at MIPS Technologies.

Eight Leading Consumer Electronics Manufacturers Establish HAVi Organization to Promote Digital AV Home Networking Architecture
HAVi Organization invites interested companies to join.
HAVi specification will be finalized in December 1999.
(Tokyo, Amsterdam, and Secaucus, NJ - November 17, 1999) "We believe that HAVi is one of the most important technologies to realize "Home Networks" for consumer audio/video and multimedia products. As one of the leading companies for HAVi development, we will strongly promote and extend HAVi technology," noted Itsuo Takanashi, Associate Director of JVC and General Manager of Technology Development Division. "We're very excited by the membership interest we've received so far," said Cees Jan Koomen, Chairman of HAVi Organization from Royal Philips Electronics. "We anticipate new members from many industries including computers and peripherals, software, semiconductors, service providers and, of course, consumer electronics." According to industry analyst The Yankee Group, "HAVi is in a good position to become a standard technology on consumer electronics devices simply because it will allow the type of connectivity and application set people have come to expect from these products." Going forward, the mission of the HAVi Organization will be to promote the adoption of the HAVi architecture and to develop interconnecting "bridges" with other home networking standards such as Jini and Universal Plug and Play (UPnP). The HAVi Specification was developed for home entertainment AV networks, providing high bandwidth for transmitting multiple AV streams and featuring easy "plug-and-enjoy" functionality, using an underlying IEEE1394 digital interface (i.LINK™ or FireWire™). The HAVi specification defines a set of APIs and middleware capable of automatically discovering devices on the network, coordinating the functions of various devices, installing applications and user interface software on each appliance and ensuring interoperability amongst multiple brands of devices

Professors Robert Hermanson and Julio Bermudez, with architecture student Cecilia Parera and Graduate School Dean William Miller (l to r) on exchange in Santa Fe, Argentina. A deep appreciation for Latin culture and a five-inch binder packed with slides aren't all that U architecture professor Robert Hermanson brought back from his semester teaching in Argentina. He also carries with him a fresh perspective that will affect his future research, his class lectures, and his curriculum. "An experience like this enriches in a covert way," he says as he catalogues the unforgettable moments and observations that have led to his rethinking of architectural and educational norms. Hermanson is one of several U professors and students of the Graduate School of Architecture who have taken advantage of an International Program for Academic Exchange with one of Argentina's oldest universities, Universidad Nacional del Litoral (UNL). All architecture students at the U are encouraged to spend time studying overseas and exchanges to Japan and Germany are also available. But the Utah-UNL exchange is unique in that it also involves the exchange of faculty, resources, and knowledge between the two schools, enriching the diversity and breadth of the teaching and curricula at both.

May 31, 2001 Plugin Offers Seamless Access to Real-Time 3D Painting App
MAXON Computer, May 31, 2001 - MAXON Computer is pleased to announce the release of a new plugin that integrates its BodyPaint 3D professional 3D painting application with Discreet's 3DS MAX versions 3 and 4. This new plugin enables 3D artists to combine two powerful applications to improve and expand production workflow. Adding fine detail to textures in a 3DS MAX scene is now easier than ever before. Artists can even paint in raytraced mode for the ultimate real-time feedback.
BodyPaint 3D allows texturing of everything from low-poly game models to complex 3D objects with millions of polygons. The BP MAX exchange plugin supports conversion of complete 3ds max scenes, including objects, hierarchies, lights, cameras, common material properties and UV tags. The scene is translated from 3DS MAX to BodyPaint 3D with the click of a button. All UV manipulation and painting of textures are then passed back to MAX with another click.
BodyPaint 3D has garnered numerous awards since its release in late 2000, including MacWeek's Best of Show for MacWorld 2001. MAXON's unique RayBrush technology enables users to paint onto a raytraced image in three dimensions in real time. Reflectivity, bump, transparency, specularity and other channels can be painted in real time with direct visual feedback in multiple 3D views. Up to 10 material channels can be painted concurrently to create compound effects like rust and scarring. Advanced UV manipulation tools allow easy manipulation of UV through Optimal and Interactive Mapping as well as detailed point editing. Additionally, BodyPaint 3D takes full advantage of the advanced features of Wacom's Intuos intelligent graphics tablet system. Users can map most aspects of brush characteristics to the pressure, tilt and angle of the Wacom pen.

'Inner Architecture'
- September 2002 A personal reporting by Peter Anderschitz on the International Forum of Young Architects (IFYA) with focus on Auroville's International Zone. This annual international design forum took place in Auroville under the label of 'Inner Architecture' from Sept. 15th until 29th 2002.
Why they came..?
Why they all came together - with a lot of effort from both the participants and the organisers - and for a rather unknown adventure? Those young professional architects from far away: from Vietnam, Germany, USA; as well as those young architecture students from India and Europe who by joining unexpectedly added even more spice to the learning exercise..? They came to learn from each other and from this richly inspiring environment called Auroville, which is a City with a Vision, yes, but also a place and a people just beginning to learn how to become citizens - of a new world.. They came to learn, and it turned out that everybody, participants and organisers, became student during these two weeks.
An other dimension to architecture
Naturally, the intention and the topic of the forum 'Inner Architecture', was the signal and call to look for another dimension to architecture, and urban and environmental design, with another intention, another way of action. Focusing the work on Auroville's International Zone, which only recently got another push by the

Fritz Leonhardt: master of bridges
Fritz Leonhardt, who died at the end of 1999, was regarded by many as one of the greatest bridge designers in the world. Shortly before his death, he talked to Helena Russell about his life and his work
Waiting in the wood panelled office for Fritz Leonhardt to arrive takes me back to my school days. It's a bit like waiting for the headmaster when you weren't quite sure whether you had been summoned for punishment or congratulations. The thrill I felt when he first agreed to be interviewed has been replaced by a mixture of excitement and fear and I have run through the interview so many times in my mind that I am word perfect.
Although he now visits his practice only occasionally, Leonhardt's office is kept exactly as he likes it. From outside in the corridor, the room even has the forbidding appearance of a headmaster's office; on the door is a large wooden frame with one carefully written word - LEONHARDT - inside it. The wood panelled room is hung with numerous pictures of his bridges and television masts, and portraits of some of his lecturers. Various messages on the desk await his response, and the latest bridge books are ready for perusal.
Leonhardt's involvement in bridge design stretches back sixty-five years over a well-documented career in which he has been at the forefront of numerous technological developments - not just in bridges but also in other sectors of structural engineering - written many highly regarded books, including his seminal 'Bridges: Aesthetics and Design', and founded and led his internationally respected design office Leonhardt, Andrä und Partner.
