The Architecture of Downtown Pittsburgh
By Martin Aurand, Architecture Librarian and Archivist, Carnegie Mellon University Libraries
Pittsburgh's architecture begins with a topography of hills ranging above narrow plains lining three rivers. The rivers meet at Downtown Pittsburgh. Historic railway inclines and tunnels connect the hills to the river plains while bridges link the river plains to the "Golden Triangle." The countless bridges serve as a gallery of bridge design and technology: the picturesque Smithfield Street Bridge (1883) is a rare lenticular truss; the "three sisters" bridges at Sixth, Seventh, and Ninth Streets (1925-1928) are a lyrical sequence of self-anchored suspension bridges. Surrounding the Hilton Hotel, Point State Park and the office towers of Gateway Center lie at the apex of the triangle. Products of Pittsburgh's "Renaissance" of the 1950s, they act as a forecourt for the city and a setting for remnants of the British Fort Pitt (1759). Low-rise buildings from the mid-nineteenth century remain along the triangle's southern fringe, and in the vicinity of Market Square, a break in the city grid laid out in 1784. The Greek Revival Burke's Building (1836) on Fourth Avenue is a survivor of Pittsburgh's Great Fire of 1845 Industrialization brought oil and steel money to Pittsburgh, one of the world’s richest cities at the turn-of-the-century. Fourth Avenue, "Pittsburgh's Wall Street," comprises low-rise banking houses that alternate with turn-of-the-century skyscrapers. Financial functions are now largely gone, but elaborate architectural facades, marble-lined lobbies, and a few banking halls remain, most notably Dollar Bank's jewelbox building (1871) at Fourth and Smithfield Streets.

Amsterdam, City of Bridges
Water and bridges are of vital importance to Amsterdam’s unique position among the historic cities of the north. Along the banks of the river Amstel a city developed that depended on the water for its survival. At one time water was even more important than dry land. After all, it was the water that allowed tradesmen to transport goods from A to B; it served to keep the enemy out and last but not least it contributed to the beauty of the city. No wonder Amsterdam is often called the Venice of the North In the course of time the number of bridges steadily increased. A map, prepared by Cornelis Antonisz in 1544, shows that 16th century Amsterdam had 52 bridges and 6 culverts. Pieter Bast’s map of circa 1600 includes 110 bridges and 10 culverts. As a result of the large-scale urban expansion of the early 17th century this number nearly doubled. When Gerred de Broen prepared his map, circa 1732, the urban expansion projects had been completed. By then there were 297 bridges and 9 culverts. After the 17th century expansion plans had been realised, the size of the city remained stable until the developments which followed the Industrial Revolution of the 19th century required a new approach. From circa 1860 onwards Amsterdam’s territory was extended beyond the Singelgracht and large residential areas were built to accommodate the needs of the ever increasing population. At that time the city centre underwent far-reaching changes as well. Several canals were filled in, a measure initially motivated by the stench and the atrocious hygiene. At a later stage canals were filled in in order to accommodate the needs of modern traffic and to create adequate thoroughfares which gave access to the newly built parts of the city. As a result many bridges were demolished. In many other cases the steep slopes of the original bridges were levelled to a certain extent in order to allow for the electrical trams to pass.

Danet builds bridges for system environments using optimal EAI architecture At Billing Systems 2002 Danet will launch b.bridge, an optimised blueprint for Business Support Systems that builds proven bridges for system environments. As investment in telecommunications declines, cost reduction, ROI (return on investment) and getting optimum value for money become more and more important. Business Support Systems are best able to meet these criteria if their life cycle is as long as possible. At the same time however, they have to constantly cope with requirements arising from innovative technologies and new products. Because of its EAI architecture, b.bridge can handle all of these prerequisites. In developing b.bridge Danet has created an optimal architecture that integrates components from leading vendors on an EAI bases, often incorporating them with legacy systems. And b.bridge is tried and tested: Danet has already implemented a number of working versions that are operating successfully for customers. Danet is now able to offer these implementations as standard solutions. They include various components from Danet’s own portfolio, for example the mediation device VMD (Vendor Mediation Device) and the document generating system DSS (Document System Solution), as well as award winning products from selected vendors such as ADC, Daleen, MetaSolv and Vitria.

Faculty And Students Of Architecture Schools At The U And At A University In Argentina Are Building Bridges Today For Joint Ventures Tomorrow Faculty and students of the U's Graduate School of Architecture assemble in front of a large projection screen and computer terminal for a video-conference with three U students studying in Argentina as part of the school's International Academic Exchange. Professors Robert Hermanson and Julio Bermudez, with architecture student Cecilia Parera and Graduate School Dean William Miller (l to r) on exchange in Santa Fe, Argentina. A deep appreciation for Latin culture and a five-inch binder packed with slides aren't all that U architecture professor Robert Hermanson brought back from his semester teaching in Argentina. He also carries with him a fresh perspective that will affect his future research, his class lectures, and his curriculum. "An experience like this enriches in a covert way," he says as he catalogues the unforgettable moments and observations that have led to his rethinking of architectural and educational norms. Hermanson is one of several U professors and students of the Graduate School of Architecture who have taken advantage of an International Program for Academic Exchange with one of Argentina's oldest universities, Universidad Nacional del Litoral (UNL). All architecture students at the U are encouraged to spend time studying overseas and exchanges to Japan and Germany are also available. But the Utah-UNL exchange is unique in that it also involves the exchange of faculty, resources, and knowledge between the two schools, enriching the diversity and breadth of the teaching and curricula at both.

ODOT CULTURAL RESOURCES FAQ Why we are here? What do we do? The ODOT Cultural Resources staff identifies and evaluates historic resources along highway projects to determine potential eligibility to the National Register of Historic Places. We examine the proposed project effects on those resources, and work with designers to evaluate possible alternatives which would avoid or minimize effects to the historic properties. We advise and coordinate with project teams on cultural resource issues, and when project effects cannot be avoided, we prepare requests for Determination of Eligibility (DOE), Cultural Reports, Section 106 Finding of Effect reports, Section 4(f) documents, and Memoranda of Agreement (MOA). We coordinate directly with the two regulatory agencies, the State Historic Preservation Office and FHWA. The cultural staff also reviews all findings, recommendations, and documents prepared by consultant forces prior to distribution to the regulatory agencies. What historic resource types need to be evaluated? What types of projects involve cultural resources?
