Tray Culture Systems
One of the most productive methods of off-bottom culture of single oysters is by means of trays suspended from rafts or longlines. These systems are also widely used for rearing juvenile clams up to the point where they must be seeded on a beach. Over the past twenty years several types of trays have been used in British Columbia and one of the major objectives has been to achieve high levels of efficiency in large scale production systems. Trays require a strictly planned approach to oyster culture because they are relatively labour intensive and cannot be ignored or neglected for any length of time. The pay back is faster growth and good quality products when these systems are well-managed. Properly grown tray-raised oysters are ideal for the half shell market, where they may be sold to restaurants or fast frozen in the half shell and sold in retail outlets. They are a particularly attractive animal to market because they are deeply cupped with a large amount of meat. Delicate fluting of the shells makes an attractive presentation in the restaurant or supermarket. To produce the kind of oyster that can command a high price requires strict control over the culture process. Oyster grown in a tray at Pearl Seaproducts. Tube Culture Systems
In an effort to develop a more efficient system for rearing oysters, an increasing number of British Columbia growers have adapted a re-usable cultch material known as "French tubes". Although this method was pioneered in Europe, high quality tubes (also commonly called "pipes") are now manufactured locally by Polychlor Plastics Ltd. Growers have devised nursery, growout and harvest systems based on the use of tubes. These systems have reduced labour costs with increasing use of mechanized bulk handling. French tubes are plastic tubes about 25mm (1 inch) in diameter and are usually in 2 meter lengths. The outer surface of the tube consists of closely spaced 2mm deep longitudinal grooves. The material and surface of the tube has proven to be an effective substrate for oyster spat settlement.
Conditioning and Constructing Tube Modules
As with any cultch material, tubes must be properly conditioned before they will be effective. New pipes are normally placed intertidally for up to a year to effectively leach the material and then conditioned to allow for a thin layer of microorganisms to colonize the surface. This layer probably acts as an attractant to the oyster looking for a suitable place to settle. Re-used pipes must be clean and free of decaying organic material. Vancouver Travel Tip by Lorry Patton English is the primary language in Vancouver, however, over 36% of Vancouverites speak other languages at home. The Chinese community is the largest. While it's true that there are more Chinese in Toronto (more than 350,000 compared to Vancouver's just under 300,000), according to Stats Canada, Vancouver has the highest per capita. More than 15% percent of Greater Vancouver's residents are Chinese, over 25% in Vancouver proper. However, long before the numbers reached these proportions, Vancouver had a vibrant Chinese community. I remember our family going downtown to dinner, about three decades ago, as a special treat. I was always dazzled by the neon signs, the seriousness of the service and the delicious food. Our Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau was a guest at one of the restaurants one evening and it made all the papers. Most of the neon signs are no longer there, and most of the diners with the chrome counters and tiled floors are gone, however, they have been replaced with exotic vegetable markets, won ton soup kitchens, wicker and jade shops and herb tea gardens. More and more, it's looking like the kitchens, shops and gardens I saw in China when I visited there.
