Northern British Columbia is a land of myths and legends. Out of the vast land of white water, creeping glaciers and dense, ancient forests come tales of a wilderness steeped in mystery and adventure. The North is a land where ancient totems loom in the forests and aboriginal culture is not just vibrant, but alive and well. It is a place where humble grizzly bears shamble along creeks and trophy salmon hurl themselves upstream. The North is a long-lost land of dinosaurs, a place where the Northern Lights mesmerize the most hardened travellers and the people still live off of the land. The stuff of legends and tales all around the world, Northern British Columbia's mystique comes from its enormity and close ties with the wilderness. As a region it is largely undeveloped and populated by small communities nestled amongst steep mountains.

What is Folklore?
R ichard M. Dorson was the pre-eminent professor of folklore until his recent death. In a 1960 critique of Dorson's book American Folklore a Harvard professor of American Civilisation wrote that folklore was, "The most sentimental, and the most anti-intellectual scholarly discipline in America today." T folklore F F olklore is common to all people. Understanding, appreciating and sharing another culture's folklore transcends race, colour, class, and creed more effectively than any other single aspect of our lives and, as an element of our past and present society it is something we can all relate to. Its value is no less than any other part of our history and heritage and as such must be documented and preserved as a legacy for our future. T hat being said, it is almost impossible to give a succinct definition of folklore. I t is relatively easy to create an operational definition - one that describes folklore on the basis of ones own, personal interests. For instance, oral literature is one of the aspects of folklore, and by oral literature we mean such things as legends, tales, proverbs, sayings, dialect speech and folksongs. But if you are only interested in collecting proverbs your definition of folklore may be somewhat restricted.
F or a proper understanding and definition of folklore and folklife it is essential to look at its separate parts. Amongst these parts are...

The history of Vancouver Island is an interesting amalgamation of First Nations and European culture.
It began with Captain Cook's arrival at Nootka Island in 1778 and, subsequently, as English and Spanish explorers found their way to the lush paradise of the Pacific Northwest.
Today, the combination of Aboriginal, Spanish and English heritage is reflected in the place names along the coast.
Saturna, Galiano and Estevan have exotic Spanish derivation, while Cook, Douglas, Chatham and Cavendish hearken back to English discovery and governance. Indian names like Cowichan, Songhees, Haida and Sooke (T'Sou-ke Nation) come from an Aboriginal population that has inhabited the Island since the ice age. If you stare out at the smoky Sooke Hills on a misty day, or visit Goldstream Park during the salmon run in November, it is easy to imagine the life of the First Nations people on the Island prior to European arrival. In the Rainforest, where old growth areas have been preserved, one gets a glimpse of the past, unadulterated by the changes wrought in this century.

The History Department at the University of British Columbia offers a complete range of programmes, including a Bachelor of Arts, a Bachelor of Arts with Honours; a Master of Arts; and a Doctor of Philosophy.
The geographical foci and intellectual approaches of the thirty faculty members who comprise the department's teaching faculty vary widely. The Department's primary strengths lie in Canadian, Asian, European, American and Latin American history. In temporal terms its greatest emphasis is on the modern period (since 1800), though it has strength in the history of early modern Europe and North America.
The research and teaching interests of the department's faculty centre on a diverse set of problems and topics, including religion; gender; popular culture; the history of ideas; comparative nationalisms; migration; political culture; the history of science and technology; the family; native history; labour; international relations; resources and business; and urban history. Faculty research and teaching in these areas are supported by long-established and well-maintained designated collections in one of Canada's leading university research libraries.
The History Department's primary academic goals can be grouped under five headings.
