Quick Start If your WELL account includes Web page publishing, setting it up to serve Web pages involves three basic steps. If you are already familiar with telnet and FTP you can get up and running with the Quick Start section, otherwise skip down to the next section.
  • Telnet to host well.com, log in, and type !makeweb at the OK prompt to create a WEB directory in your WELL home directory. This only needs to be done once.
  • FTP your html and image files to the WEB directory you just created.
  • Set your file permissions by typing !websecurity at your WELL OK prompt. Permissions must be set each time you upload a new file to your WEB directory.
Publishing Your Web Page on the WELL When you publish your Web page on the WELL your URL or Web address will be:
http://www.well.com/user/username To get started you will need to telnet to your WELL account in order to prepare it for serving out Web pages. Open your telnet program and connect to host "well.com" using a terminal type of vt100. After you have connected to the WELL and logged in you will need to type !makeweb at your OK prompt. This creates a directory in your WELL home directory named "WEB". This procedure only needs to be done once in order to set your account up. You can now start transferring your prepared html files to this directory.

    Welcome to Adept Scientific plc
The Technical Computing People Adept Pressroom 26th October 2000 A Giant Step Forward In Technical Web Publishing MathSoft and IBM Collaborate to Revolutionise Mathematics Publishing on the Internet A worldwide standard for a maths, science and technology enabled web browser has moved a step closer with the announcement of an ambitious partnership between IBM and MathSoft, developer of Mathcad, the world's most widely used mathematics software. The project centres around IBM's techexplorer hypermedia browser, the plug-in for web browsers which reads and translates technical formulae written in expression codes of mark-up languages such as TeX, LaTeX and MathML.
Under the joint agreement, MathSoft will licence one million copies of techexplorer to integrate into its technology. The tailored product will enable MathSoft customers to publish technical documents as HTML with MathML, using techexplorer. Dr. Paul Bragg, managing director of UK Mathcad distributor Adept Scientific, said: “MathML has offered considerable potential for some time as being the way of providing true mathematical objects on the web which the scientific community so badly needs. This exciting development is a big step towards being able to publish editable formulae in a vendor-independent format.
"With Mathcad's massive user base and the acclaimed technology of IBM's techexplorer, the MathML standard for which we've all built up our expectations should reach critical mass."

However, for appropriate applications, dynamic publishing methods offer great advantages over websites constructed from static HTML pages. Instead of a website comprising a collection of manually constructed HTML pages, server-side scripting and database access techniques are used to piece together web pages directly in response to requests from users’ browsers. The development and implementation costs of dynamically generated websites are can be substantially higher than the alternative. However, for appropriate applications, there will be savings in running costs including efficiency gains in the management of content updates and changes to the site structure.

    Content and Organization

The general principles of good writing and design hold true in electronic media. However, writing and designing in HTML has its own rules that differ from traditional print media. Keep that in mind when reading the following recommendations.
    • The Web is a public resource
      Determine your audience before content

When composing pages ask yourself, "Who am I trying to reach?" "What does my reader want to learn?" Then, identify the information that must be included in your site that both addresses the target audiences' needs and accomplishes your communication goals. Use terminology and language mainstream audience members will recognize. The over-use of technical and Web jargon usually acts as a deterrent and draws attention away from the true mission of a site.
      Search Tools
Due to this wide variety, Web project coordinators should consider adding key words to headlines, titles and metatags to accommodate all types of search engines.

    Building Web Pages with Composer
Composer helps you create and edit your own web pages and place (or "post") them on the web. Composer looks and acts like a word processing program, and is just as easy to use. Behind the scenes of each page on the web is code called HTML, which stands for Hypertext Markup Language. This name means that HTML is is the computer language used for marking up documents with links in them. The code, called HTML source code, tells the web browser how a page should look and act. You don't need to know how to write HTML code to make a web page. Composer enables you to work in a WYSIWIG (what you see is what you get) environment - just like a word processor - and it automatically generates the HTML code you need to make your page do what you want it to do. The basic elements of a web page are text, pictures, and links. You can put all of these and more on your own pages, and then publish those pages on the web.

Microsoft Makes Web Publishing Easier for Millions of Office Users New No-Charge Add-Ons for Microsoft Access, PowerPoint and Schedule+ Enhance Microsoft Office's Status as Leading Internet Suite REDMOND, Wash. - April 8, 1996 http://www.microsoft.com/office/ under Internet Tools. "When it comes to creating documents for an intranet or the Internet, users want to make full use of their knowledge and investment in the tools they understand and use every day," said Robbie Bach, director of marketing for desktop applications at Microsoft. Bringing the Power of a Desktop Database to the Web With more than 10 million users, Microsoft Access for Windows 95 is the leading desktop database for managing and reporting on structured data from a wide variety of sources. With the release of Internet Assistant for Microsoft Access, users can easily publish information stored in corporate databases, making data such as product catalogs, price lists and customer information readily accessible to Web browsers. Now, with a simple wizard, users can automatically publish a rich array of Microsoft Access reports, form datasheets, queries and tables in HTML and share them on the Web, thus eliminating the time-consuming and complex task of manually rekeying information and coding complex HTML reports. Microsoft Access Internet Assistant also uses templates created in Microsoft Word Internet Assistant to provide rich formatting that is easy to customize.

    Guidelines for Information Providers
Michigan State University provides a mechanism for each member of the campus community (student, faculty, and staff) to establish a presence on the Internet's World Wide Web. The mechanism is employs the campus-wide file system, which is based upon the Andrew File System, or AFS. This document describes:
    • What personal Web publishing is Why a member of the campus community might want to participate in personal publishing A summary of the responsibilities assumed by a user of the personal publishing service An overview of the steps involved in beginning to publish Web pages using this service
What is personal publishing on the World Wide Web?
Traditionally, "publishing" on the Web required each information provider to either run a server, or have direct access to a server's file system in order to post documents for delivery to users worldwide. Personal Web publishing is a simple mechanism that allows you to publish your documents on the Web without running your own Web server, and without having direct access to a Web server. The personal Web publishing scheme implemented at MSU allows you to prepare Web documents and store them as part of your AFS space. By placing your documents in a special folder under your AFS directory called "web" (prior to July 30, 1996, called "public/web") you are making your documents available to anyone on the World Wide Web. Thus, personal Web publishing allows any of the 50,000 or so members of the MSU community to make their documents available on the global Internet through a series of simple steps.
