International Religious Freedom Report
Released by the Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights, and Labor
The Constitution states that, "The religion of Brunei Darussalam shall be the Muslim religion according to the Shafeite sect of that religion: Provided that all other religions may be practiced in peace and harmony by the person professing them in any part of Brunei Darussalam;" however, the Government imposes some restrictions on non-Islamic religions. There was no change in the status of respect for religious freedom during the period covered by this report. The official religion is Islam, as practiced by the Shafeite School. Other religions, such as Christianity, Buddhism, and Hinduism, also are practiced; however, non-Muslims are not allowed to proselytize, nor are parochial schools allowed to teach the religions of their respective faiths. The Government detained several Christians in late 2000 and early 2001 for alleged subversive activities. The country's various religious groups coexist peacefully, although they do not interact regularly. The U.S. Government discusses religious freedom with the Government in the context of its overall dialog and policy of promoting human rights.

However, there are several Christian-based schools and eight Chinese schools managed by the Chinese community. The Government detained several Christians in late 2000 and 2001 for alleged subversive activities. These individuals subsequently were released, the last of them in October 2001 after taking an oath of allegiance to the Sultan. The country’s various religious groups coexist peacefully, although they do not interact regularly.

Media Organizations in the Philippines
INTRODUCTION
G overnment and private media organizations co-exist in the Philippines. Owing to the free-market orientation of the Philippine economy, however, the number of private media communication networks far outnumber their government counterparts. As such, there is no strict "hierarchical" structure mandated by law for the private media industry as a whole. Any semblance of "structural order" in the private sector is self-imposed through the various trade organizations in broadcasting, print, advertising, and public relations. However, vital sectors of media which partake of the public domain are regulated or monitored by government quasi-judicial bodies, as in the case of the broadcast airwaves, videograms, and movie production and distribution.
