Social Structure
Maldives was a caste society well into the 1920s. Modernization efforts however, have helped make Maldives more homogeneous in the early 1990s. Traditionally, a significant gap has existed between the elite living on Male and the remainder of the population inhabiting the outer islandsthose atolls distant from Male. President Gayoom's development philosophy has centered on decreasing this gap by raising the standard of living among the 75 percent of Maldivians who live in the outer atolls as well as making Maldives more self-sufficient. Fortunately, social tensions that might have affected these two distinct societies were lessened by the isolation of the outer islands. The geographical advantage of having many islands, for example, has enabled Maldives to limit the impact of tourism to special resorts. Male, the traditional seat of the sultans and of the nobility, remains an elite society wielding political and economic power. Members of the several traditionally privileged ruling families; government, business, and religious leaders; professionals; and scholars are found there. Male differs from other island communities also because as many as 40 percent of its residents are migrants.

07 - February 12th thru February 18th 2001, Vol XI Flash of Insight Into a Unique Spiritual Journey: Hadramaut's Ziyara Al Nebi Hud Festival By: Karen Dabrawska
Yemen Times

Peter Sanders is the first man to photograph the annual Ziyara Al Neb Hud Festival in a remote part of Hadramaut. But this humble, unassuming convert to Islam, who has taken over 100,000 photographs in 22 countries, is not interested in international acclaim: his life is centered around a spiritual journey of discovery.
'I wanted to go to this festival, which is like a mini hajj, for about five years', Sanders told The Yemen Times. His dream came true in 1998 when he combined a trip to the Prophet Hud's burial place with an assignment for Aramco World about gamariyas, characterized by round windows, glazed with very thinly cut alabaster panels used instead of glass.
'It is a five-day event in a place, which is only inhabited at the time of the festival. I was impressed by the behavior of the people. They were very devout and sincere and there is something very beautiful about the place. You feel that the stars are so close you can touch them'.
Hud was a pre-Islamic prophet. He lived among the people of Ad, who inhabited an area between Yemen and Oman. They were renowned for their craftsmanship, especially the construction of tall buildings with lofty towers. Political power was in the hands of unjust rulers against whom no one dared raise a voice.

" The Constitution states that, ‘The religion of Brunei Darussalam shall be the Muslim religion according to the Shafeite sect of that religion : Provided that all other religions may be practiced in peace and harmony by the person professing them in any part of Brunei Darussalam.’ In recent months, the Government has sporadically voiced alarm about ‘outsiders’ preaching radical Islamic fundamentalist or unorthodox beliefs. Citizens deemed to have been influenced by such preaching (usually students returning from overseas study) have been ‘shown the error of their ways’ in study seminars organized by orthodox Islamic religious leaders. The Government seems more concerned about these so-called Islamic ‘opportunists’ than unwelcome political views. Moreover, the Government does not hesitate to investigate and to use its internal security apparatus against these purveyors of radical Islam.

Traditional Chinese Opera Traditional Chinese opera has a history of more than 800 years. It is an art form which integrates singing, music, dialogue, acting and acrobatics. There are more than 300 different operatic forms in China. Among the local operatic forms staged nationwide are Beijing Opera, Pingju Opera, Shaoxing Opera and Henan Opera. The best-known is Beijing Opera, which has a history of more than 200 years. It originated in Beijing, then capital of Qing Dynasty. There are different schools, styles and forms of singing in Beijing Opera. In acting and acrobatic fighting, different roles follow different patterns, and their movements and gestures are stylized, suggestive and symbolic. For instance, the actions of opening a door, going up the stairs , rowing a boat or climbing a bill, are done purely through the dance-like movements of the actors with the help of props. String and percussion instruments also provide a distinct characteristic of Beijing Opera. (To enjoy Beijing Opera, click here for audio file.) Modern Chinese drama has developed under the influence of foreign dramatic literature and conventions . In the 1910's, drama troupes were formed in the country. The most popular plays staged in the 1930's and 1940's are Thunderstorm, Sunrise, Qu Yuan and Twin Flowers.

General Profile of the Philippines
INTRODUCTION
T he visitor to Metro Manila commonly sees the Philippines as the most westernized of Asian countries and in many ways it is. But there is also a rich underlay of Malay culture beneath the patina of Spanish and American heritage. National cultural life is a happy marriage of many influences, as the indigenous Malay culture is assimilated and adapted to different strains in a practice typical of Malay temperament. An upsurge of Philippine nationalism stimulated a desire to preserve the ancient heritage without restricting its openness to foreign artistic influence. The Philippines is an archipelago of 7,107 islands. It stretches from the south of China to the northern tip of Borneo. The country has over a hundred ethnic groups and a mixture of foreign influences which have molded a unique Filipino culture.

The Singapore Economy and currency Small countries with no natural resources usually have to fight harder than most to survive. Singapore has takenee a pragmatic and carefully-planned approach to economic developmentbuilding on its traditional strengths in entrepot trade and shipping, while gradually diversifying into banking and financial services and other high-value-added sectors. It has worked hard to become one of the busiest ports in the world in terms of shipping tonnagewith 700 ships in port at any time and with more than 600 shipping lines with links to more than 800 international ports. It has no natural energy resources, yet it runs more than 10 refineries and is one of the largest oil-refining centres in Asia. The pace has been fast and furious, with virtually a different focus in each decade of the island's modern history. In the 1960s, especially in the wake of separation from Malaysia, there was a need to create jobs. Thus began the heyday of the labour-intensive industries. By the 1970s, there was full employment and there was a shift towards higher-skilled jobs. In the 1980s, manufacturing capabilities were emphasized. The focus on manufacturing continued to the 1990s, with the addition of the service and electronics sectors. By 1993, Singapore had begun to grow its "external economy", with several investments and cooperative projects in Asia, including China, Indonesia and Vietnam.
