    History
Brunei is one of the most ancient states in Asia and was probably originally settled as early as the 8th century. Islam came to Brunei via the Sultanate of Tumasek in the early 15th century having arrived there through merchants and travellers from the Middle East. With Islamic rule, Brunei rose to the heights of its power during the 16th century under one of the greatest Sultans in its history - Sultan Bolkiah. He made a number of expeditions with his fleet to Java and Malacca and made conquests not only in Borneo but also in the Philippines.
Trade with outside countries increased and by the early 1800's the British began to show an interest in Borneo. In 1838 the famous Victorian explorer James Brooke arrived in Borneo, at a time when piracy was rife. Brooke fought against piracy and successfully quelled a rebellion. In return, the ruling Sultan ceded him an area known as Sarawak and made Brooke the Rajah. From then on, the Sultanate came under increasing pressure from the Brooke regime in the south and American and European speculators in Sabah, to release more territory. These pressures culminated in the seizing of Limbang in 1890 which split Brunei into two parts. Sandwiched between the North Borneo Company to the northeast and the Brooke state in the southwest, the formerly powerful Sultanate of Brunei was reduced to little more than 5,700 square kilometers - the size it is today.

    Growth of Airline
Established on 18 November 1974, Royal Brunei Airlines is an independent corporation wholly owned by the government of Negara Brunei Darussalam. The airline continued on its flight path to growth with the acquisition of three wide-bodied, extended-range B757-200 aircraft, launching services to Taipei (1986), Dubai (1988) and Frankfurt (1990). Meantime, as services continued to expand frenetically, the B737s were sold and the first extended-range B767-200 was delivered in June 1990. The delivery flight broke the world distance record for a civil twin-engined airliner when it flew from Seattle to Mombasa/Nairobi in 17 hours and 51 minutes. Royal Brunei Airlines held this world record until the introduction of the longer range B777 nearly ten years later. With the arrival of the B767, operations expanded to London Gatwick (1990) and Perth (1991). In May 1991, the airline began flying to London Heathrow (1991) instead of London Gatwick.
Subsequently, seven other B767-300ERs were delivered, bringing the total fleet to eight B767s and two B757s. The B767-300ER aircraft has 34 tons cargo capacity while the B757 has 10.9 tons.

    Timeless and Tranquil
In 1991, Brunei, with its enlightened conservation policies, hosted a unique 14-month rainforest study project which was jointly organised by Britain's Royal Geographical Society and the University of Brunei Darussalam. The study site is now known as the Belalong Rainforest Field Studies Centre. Other nature and recreation reserves include Batang Duri, Sungai Basong, Sungai Liang, Ulu Mendaram, Wasai Wang Kadir, Luagan Lalak, Anduki Silver Jubilee Park at Seria and the Berakas Forestry Recreation Park. The Museum of Forestry lies off the coastal road to Seria, and national parks are located at Ulu Temburong and Tasik Merimbun. Although many areas are accessible only to the most resourceful natural historian, the casual visitor can enjoy locally organised tours of the Temburong district, including excursions to the interior by jeep and long boat. Venturing along the Belait and Tutong rivers can be arranged, and, in Bandar Seri Begawan, sunset dinner cruises regularly ply the Brunei River.

    WHY BRUNEI?
"Brunei is one of the oldest existing polities in Southeast Asia," observe D. Ranjit Singh and Jatswan S. Sidhu in their excellent Historical Dictionary of Brunei Darussalam (1997). It has a "rich historical heritage," they continue, "and is the longest surviving sultanate in the region." If that's not incentive enough to introduce your students to this unit on Brunei, compare the third curriculum standard listed below with this further assessment by Singh and Sidhu: "Through the ages … Brunei acquired an astute sense in the use of international diplomacy. The monarchy especially made effective use of this tool to steer the kingdom out of very tight situations and, in the process, has managed to save and preserve the identity of the state … to bring it to the status of a full sovereign nation." Clearly, Brunei is an excellent topic for teachers working on any standard of learning (SOL) that deals with the impact of globalization on traditional societies.

Early influence. Millennia ago, the lush tropical islands of Southeast Asia were populated by Malays and other peoples who became skilled in cultivation (tea, spices, rice) and handcrafts East meets West. When European merchant ships first arrived (1521), Brunei controlled most of Borneo, many nearby islands, and part of the Philippines. But this empire did not last. Dazzled by the region's resources, Dutch, French, and British traders urged their governments to colonize (or otherwise control) Southeast Asia. And while Brunei never became a colony, it lost much territory. Brunei did become a British protectorate in 1888. But in 1959, it proclaimed its right to govern itself under a new constitution. And in 1984, it regained full independence. Independence.
    And now....
Still, there's reason for concern. The country's fossil fuels may run out in 20 years. To offset that loss, Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah's government works hard to diversify the economy by promoting other industries, such as eco-tourism and international financial services. But that presents a challenge, too. Service industries involve one-to-one interactions with people all over the world. And Brunei's leaders worry about the impact that this aspect of globalization could have on their kingdom's cultural traditions.
So: Will Brunei "close its doors"? Hardly. Its sultan is a supporter of free world trade. Brunei is active in APEC, the UN, the Association of Southeast Asian Nations and other international groups. And it supports ASEAN's guidelines:

History Brunei is an independent nation ever since 1984. Its history is long and colorful and is one of Southeast Asia's oldest sovereign nations. Brunei has a recorded history of over 600 years. The country rose to prominence in the 15th and 16th centuries with the size covering Borneo and the entire present day Philippines. The first sultan to embrace Islam in Brunei was Sultan Muhammad I who reigned for 39 years in the 14th century. Around the year 1478, the sultans in the region managed to free themselves from the clutches of Hindu rulers and soon after that, Islam became rooted in Brunei. The first capital was established during the pre Islamic era. It is known as Puni, in the district of Temburong. The capital city was later moved to Kota Batu where the Brunei Museum now stands. The final move came during the reign of Sultan Muhyiddin I during the 17th century. Now, Bandar Seri Begawan is the country's capital. Brunei's past wealth was based on the export of camphor, pepper and gold.

History: In ancient times, Brunei was a powerful trading nation controlling most of Borneo and part of the Philippines archipelago, with extensive connections throughout South-East Asia. The country was occupied briefly during the late 16th century by the Spanish, part of whose colonial mission was always the vigorous dissemination of Catholicism: in the previous century Islam had been adopted in Brunei as the principal religion. In the mid-19th century, Brunei came under British influence when the seafarer James Brooke was granted control of the Sarawak region (now part of Malaysia) in return for protection against pirates. The island of Labuan was also ceded to Britain, thereby reducing Brunei to its current borders.

In the mid-19th century, Brunei came under British influence when the seafarer James Brooke was granted control of the Sarawak region (now part of Malaysia) in return for protection against pirates. The following year, a treaty was signed formalising British assistance.
In 1888, Britain declared 'North Borneo' to be a British Protectorate under which the territory was governed by a British resident with purely nominal powers available to the Sultan. This arrangement continued - apart from a period of Japanese occupation between 1941 and 1945- until Brunei's transition to independence began in 1959. That year, a new Anglo-Brunei agreement was signed under which the UK assumed responsibility for defence and foreign affairs but passed control of all other matters to the Sultan. Three years later, the North Borneo Liberation Army instigated rebellions, during which a state of emergency was declared. As a result the Sultan assumed the power to rule by decree. Since then, with the benefit of its vast oil wealth, Brunei has undergone steady, if somewhat unequal, development. The country is in many respects comparable to the Gulf sheikhdoms - small, exceedingly wealthy and more or less surrounded by larger, poorer nations.
