Pre Presidency On April 23, 1791, James Buchanan was born in Stoney Batter , close to Mercersburg, Pennsylvania. He was born in the same year that George Washington was president, so he was James Buchanan's hero. James was the second of eleven children, though the first child died less than a year after birth. When James was young, he worked at his father's store. He wasn't as serious a student as his brothers and sisters and his parents expected more of him. He worked as hard as he could at what he did.
His father worked with lawyers and in politics and James got very interested in this.
James Buchanan went to Dickenson law school in Carlisle. Pennsylvania. He entered Dickenson at the age of sixteen. He studied Law and he also studied Latin, Greek, English as well as Reading, Writing, and Math. When he was 23 years old, he started working in politics. James' father's interest in politics and the political conversations he was used to hearing around home, made his choice to work in politics a natural one. Some of the positions he held were Secretary of State, U.S. Senator, Pennsylvania House of Representatives, Ambassador to Russia, Ambassador to Great Britain, and a lawyer.
In 1819, James Buchanan had a girl friend named Ann Coleman. They got engaged and were to be married, but her father said no. Unfortunately, she died a couple weeks later while visiting her sister . Perhaps James never loved again.

    http://www.who2.com/jamesbuchanan.html
JAMES BUCHANAN 15th U.S. President Buchanan was the last American president born in the 18th century, and his term (1857-61) was the last before the Civil War. Buchanan came to the presidency after a distinguished public career: 10 years as a U.S. representative and another 10 as a senator, ambassadorships to both Russia and Great Britain, and service as James K. Polk 's secretary of state. In the 1856 elections he whipped both former president Millard Fillmore and frontier hero John C. Fremont , no small feat. But as president Buchanan couldn't handle the bad blood between North and South; his attempts to find a legalistic solution were never effective. By the election of 1860 Buchanan was tired of the presidency and did not seek re-election. Rightly or wrongly, "Old Buck" has been tagged as one of history's least effective presidents. He was succeeded by Republican Abraham Lincoln
Extra credit : Buchanan was a lifelong bachelor and the only president never to marry... His vice-president, John Cabell Breckinridge of Kentucky, was the youngest ever: just over 36 years old when he was inaugurated. POTUS Index: James Buchanan

Early Career. A Federalist in politics, Buchanan was twice elected to the Pennsylvania General Assembly (1814, 1815), and in 1821 he entered the U.S. Congress. Eventually joining the coalition that in 1828 elected Andrew Jackson president, he became a loyal Democrat, although he generally remained a moderate on such partisan issues as tariff and bank policies.
The Presidency. top Millard Fillmore in their bid for the presidency. Acceptable both to Northern Democrats and Southern moderates, he ran on a platform of popular sovereignty (the right of settlers in a territory to decide whether or not to sanction slavery). Within two days of his inauguration, however, in the Dred Scott Seeking to steer a middle course between the widely divergent philosophies of the South and North, Buchanan was unable in 1860 to prevent the breakup of his party or afterward to reunite the factions, one of which supported Vice-President John C. Breckinridge and the other Sen. Stephen A. Douglas. In the secession crisis following the victory of Republican Abraham Lincoln , Buchanan sought to gain time to allow passions to cool. Declaring that secession was illegal but that he had no power to prevent it, he attempted to preserve the peace by not provoking secessionists. Stiffening somewhat after the reorganization of his cabinet, he refused Southern demands that federal troops be ordered to abandon Fort Sumter in the harbor of Charleston, S.C. His efforts to supply the fort failed, however, as did his plans for a constitutional convention. He left office disappointed and discredited.
