An Introduction To This Web Site
At the current time, this site is almost entirely about the problem of financing Social Security after the boomers begin reaching age 65 in the year 2010. The projected Medicare funding gap is also discussed. Most of the statistics about Social Security are from the March 1999 Social Security Trustees Report (TR99) Most media reporting about Social Security funding that I have seen is confusing and even misleading. Thus I decided to learn about Social Security and Medicare from the primary government source material (the March 1999 Trustees Reports on

    Overview
Welcome to the Budget home page of the United States Department of Education (ED). Here you'll find a wealth of information about the President's FY 2004 Budget request for ED, including a program-by-program description of the request, accompanied by tables showing program amounts and State grant allocations and a statement by the Deputy Secretary. In Budget News ED currently administers a budget of about $63 billion per year and operates programs that touch on every area and level of education. The Department's elementary and secondary programs annually serve nearly 15,000 school districts and more than 53 million students attending over 92,000 public schools and more than 27,000 private schools. Department programs also provide grant, loan, and work-study assistance to more than 8 million postsecondary students. That said, it is important to point out that education in America is primarily a State and local responsibility, and ED's budget is only a small part of both total national education spending and the overall Federal budget, as we explain in a primer on

    NATIONAL DEBT AWARENESS CENTER
Updated 15 March 2003 The National Debt is $6.4+ Trillion! Check it yourself (it changes daily), at the U. S. Treasury Department web site. The interest expense on the National Debt is the second largest expense in the federal budget. *Second only to income redistribution Last year (FY02) the U. S. Government spent $333 Billion of your money on interest payments* to the holders of the National Debt. Compare that to NASA at $14 Billion, Education at $32 Billion, and Department of Transportation at $51 Billion. And now this fiscal year (since 1 October 2002) we've already spent $147 Billion on interest payments! Your money is spent throught Appropriations Bills passed by Congress and signed by the President. This chart is based on the Appropriations Bills. The Government does not have any money, it takes your money from you and spends that! Press Release on Tax Code and the IRS. "Deficit" vs. "National Debt" Suppose you want to spend more money this month than your income. This situation is called a "budget deficit". So you borrow. The amount you borrowed (and now owe) is called your debt. You have to pay interest on your debt. If next month you don't have enough money to cover your spending (another deficit), you must borrow some more, and you'll still have to pay the interest on the loan. If you have a deficit every month, you keep borrowing and your debt grows. Soon the interest payment on your loan is bigger than any other item in your budget. Eventually, all you can do is pay the interest payment, and you don't have any money left over for anything else. This situation is known as bankruptcy.
