The comeback of the bison from near extinction in 1900 to over 300,000 animals today has been a testament to the foresight of a few dedicated individuals and the efforts of hundreds of private ranches and public herds. After millions of years of evolution, once again the bison’s great strengths are beginning to be recognized:
  • Their perfect adaptation to their environment
  • The low fat and low cholesterol qualities of the meat
  • The great durability of the leather
  • Their hardiness to withstand extremes in climate
The National Buffalo Foundation was founded in 1995 at the time of the merger of the National and American Bison Associations. The National Buffalo Foundation has been formed to help insure the future for this magnificent animal and to help continue its remarkable recovery in the 21at century. 85. Ask Jack - Are Buffalo And Bison Different Names For The Same Animal?
Question Are buffalo and bison different names for the same animal? AnswerYes, buffalo and bison are different names for the same animal.
http://www.jackhanna.com/askjack/askjack8-12-00.html
Question: Are Buffalo and Bison different names for the same animal? Answer: Yes, Buffalo and Bison are different names for the same animal. The American Buffalo or Bison once roamed all over America. It is only natural for an animal that is seen by people from different parts of the country to have different names. Pumas, Cougars and Mountain lions are also different names for the same large Cat that roams all over America. This is why scientist give each animal a specific scientific name to avoid confusion when speaking to other scientist from around the world. The Scientific name for the American Buffalo is Bison. Thanks for the great Question. Congratulations!

91. Buffalo Nations Bison Update 11-24-97
Our newest project is to place bison Safe Zone signs in locals' yards tolet the DOL know they are not allowed on their land to kill buffalo.
http://www.forwolves.org/ralph/bison/buffalonation11-97.htm
Buffalo Nations update 11-24-97 Greetings from West Yellowstone, For the last two weeks, Buffalo Nations volunteers have patrolled the Park boundaries for buffalo. We have 10 very enthusiastic and energetic activists from around the U.S. who are out with the buffalo everyday from sunrise to sunset. So far, the Department of Livestock (DOL) has made only one appearance. Before they stepped out of their trucks, two Buffalo Nations shepherds were asking them who they where and what they were doing there. Needless to say, very little was debated and after some quick photos of our buffalo shepherds, the DOL employees took off. Local support is tremendous. We have a weekly column in the local newspaper "The Yellowstone News." We get encouraging phone calls everyday from locals that want to help in anyway they can. Our newest project is to place "Bison Safe Zone" signs in locals' yards to let the DOL know they are not allowed on their land to kill buffalo. It also gives us areas toward which we can shepherd bison to safety. About eight big bull buffalo have been travelling in and out of the Park daily. The snow is here, and with it comes more buffalo. The DOL could be here to kill buffalo any day, and we will be here waiting. 10 activists is a great number, but 50 would be so much better! The more people we have here, the safer the buffalo will be. Make your plans to come out and help save the last wild buffalo this winter. We have plenty of room and food, and all that get the calling are welcome.

The Plains Indians followed herds sometimes up to 200 miles across the prairies. The Indians depended on the animal for survival and used every part of the buffalo. They used: hides for tipis and clothing, bones for tools and toys, the meat for food, tendons and muscles for sinewy sewing thread and bowstrings, horns for cups and spoons. They used the brains for hide tanning, the eyes for liquid paint thickener, and the buffalo chips for fuel and baby powder. The destruction of the animal, leading almost to extinction, began in 1830 when government policy advocated their extermination to subdue the "hostile" tribes through starvation. By 1900, less than 1000 buffalo remained. But thanks to federal regulation and careful breeding, there are now about 30,000 buffalo in national parks and privately owned rangeland such as Bear Country U.S.A.
A buffalo's habitat varies. They live primarily on plains, prairies, river valleys and sometimes forests. Free ranging buffalo occur only in national parks and reserves such as Yellowstone and Custer. While we often call these animals buffalo, their proper name is bison. True buffalo only live in Africa and Asia.
