"Therapy is like holding up a mirror in which a client can see themselves. I relate more deeply to my clients the more I see myself in them: my pain, my struggles, my courage...and I always do, because we are more alike than we are different. The empathy of sharing this experience in the process of therapy; of being so very human together; therapist and client...it is from this 'place' that healing and change occur."

    Bulimia Nervosa
What is bulimia nervosa? Bulimia nervosa is a serious eating disorder marked by a destructive pattern of binge-eating and recurrent inapproriate behavior to control one's weight. It can occur together with other psychiatric disorders such as bipolar disorder, self mutilation, obsessive-compulsive disorder, or dissociative identity disorder. Binge-eating is defined as the consumption of large amounts of food within a short period of time. The food is often sweet, high in calories, and has a texture that makes it easy to eat fast. "Inapproriate compensatory behavior" to controle one's weight may include purging behaviors (such as self-induced vomiting, abuse of laxatives, diuretics, or enemas) or non-purgning behaviors (such as fasting or excessive exercise). For those who binge eat, sometimes any amount of food, even a salad or half an apple, is perceived as a binge and is vomited. People with bulimia nervosa often feel a lack of control during their eating binges. Their food is usually eaten secretly and gobbled down rapidly with little chewing. A binge is usually ended by abdominal discomfort. When the binge is over, the person with bulimia feels guilty and purges to rid his or her body of the excess calories.

Induced vomiting known as purging allows the eating to continue without the weight gain; it may continue until interrupted by sleep, abdominal pain , or the presence of another person.
The person is usually aware that their eating pattern is abnormal and may experience fear or guilt associated with the binge-purge episodes. The behavior is usually secretive, although clues to this disorder include overactivity, peculiar eating habits, eating rituals, and frequent weighing. Body weight is usually normal or low, although the person may perceive themselves as overweight

    What is bulimia nervosa?
Bulimia nervosa, often simply called bulimia, is an eating disorder. People with bulimia consume large amounts of food and then rid their bodies of the excess calories by purging (self-induce vomiting, misuse of laxatives or diuretics) or by non-purging (excessive exercise, fasting) behaviors. Some bulimics use a combination of purging and non-purging behaviors. The cycle of overeating and purging can quickly become an addictive behavior. Often, the individual will feel a loss of control during over eating and the purging/nonpurging behavior becomes a way of regaining control.
    Who suffers from bulimia nervosa?
As with anorexia, bulimia typically begins during adolescence. The condition occurs most often in women, but is also found in men. Many people who suffer from bulimia "binge and purge" in secret. They may maintain normal or above normal body weight. Others may experience significant weight fluctuations. Bulimia can occur in those with anorexia nervosa or it can occur as a separate condition. The chances for recovery increase the earlier bulimia nervosa is detected.
