Other cities -Bobo- Dioulasso (250,000), Koudougou (70,000).
Terrain: Savanna; brushy plains, and scattered hills.
Climate: Sahelian; pronounced wet and dry seasons. Burkina Faso is a landlocked Sahel country that shares borders with six nations. It lies between the Sahara Desert and the Gulf of Guinea, south of the loop of the Niger River. The land is green in the south, with forests and fruit trees, and desert in the north. Most of central Burkina Faso lies on a savanna plateau, 198- 305 meters (650-1,000 ft.) above sea level, with fields, brush, and scattered trees. Burkina Faso's game preserves-the most important of which are Arly, Nazinga, and Park W-contain lions, elephants, hippopotamus, monkeys, warthog, and antelopes. Tourism is not well developed. Annual rainfall varies from about 100 centimeters (40 in.) in the south to less than 25 centimeters (10 in.) in the extreme north and northeast, where hot desert winds accentuate the dryness of the region. Burkina Faso has three distinct seasons: warm and dry (November-March); hot and dry (March-May); and hot and wet (June- October). Rivers are not navigable.

Burkina Faso COUNTRY DESCRIPTION: Burkina Faso, previously known as Upper Volta, is a developing West African country that borders the Sahara Desert. The official language is French. Facilities for tourism are not widely available. ENTRY REQUIREMENTS: A passport and visa are required. Travelers should obtain the latest information and details from the Embassy of Burkina Faso, 2340 Massachusetts Avenue, NW, Washington, D.C. 20008, telephone (202) 332-5577. There are honorary consuls for Burkina Faso in Decatur (Georgia), Los Angeles and New Orleans. Overseas inquiries should be made at the nearest Burkina Faso embassy or consulate. SAFETY AND SECURITY: U.S. citizens traveling to and residing in Burkina Faso are urged to exercise caution and maintain a high level of security awareness at all times. The capital of Ouagadougou periodically experiences demonstrations and civil unrest. Although the demonstrations are generally peaceful, there have been several incidents of violence and destruction within recent years. U.S. citizens should avoid crowds, political gatherings and street demonstrations and contact the consular section of the U.S. Embassy upon arrival to register and to obtain the latest information on travel and security. CRIME INFORMATION: Street crime in Burkina Faso poses high risks for visitors. Most reported incidents involve purse-snatchers and street scam artists, who target wallets, jewelry and other valuables. Thieves are especially active during international meetings or events, which draw large crowds to the capital. The areas near and around the U.N. Circle and the Central Market in Ouagadougou, experience the highest incidence of purse snatchings and muggings. Travelers should stay alert, remain in groups and avoid poorly lit areas. Be especially cautious at night.

This activity was used with pupils in key stages 3 and 4, years 7 to 11.
Context
This school is an inner-city, mixed 11-18 comprehensive school where about half the pupils come from various minority ethnic backgrounds (mainly Caribbean or African). This case study describes a number of activities undertaken over two years. Some of these develop pupils' knowledge, understanding and skills in French, while others extend into work in citizenship, PSHE and geography.
Aims
  • To introduce the culture of a non-European French-speaking country (Burkina Faso). To counteract stereotypical views of France and French culture. To produce a resources pack for teachers of French based on life in Burkina Faso. To encourage comparison between the experiences and perspectives of people in Burkina Faso and young people here.
Activity objectives
  • To become aware that French is a language spoken in a number of countries with widely differing cultures and economies. To communicate with people in and from Burkina Faso.

Ouagadougou, also Wagadugu, city in central Burkina Faso, capital of the country and of its Kadiogo Province. A commercial and administrative center, it is connected by rail with Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire, on the Atlantic Ocean, and by road with Niamey, Niger. Livestock, grain, cotton, vegetables, and shea nuts are produced in the surrounding area, which also has granite and lignite deposits. Industries include cotton ginning, textile weaving, and the manufacture of foodstuffs, beverages, clothing, rugs, soap, and metal handicrafts. The city is the site of the University of Ouagadougou (1969), several research institutes, a sports stadium, and the palace of a Mossi chief. Ouagadougou became the center of a powerful Mossi state around 1400. In 1896 the city was captured by the French, and it served as the capital of France's Upper Volta protectorate from 1919 to 1932 and from 1947 to 1960, when the country (now Burkina Faso) became independent. Population (1991 estimate) 634,479.
