Burma
Japanese occupation of Burma in had cut off the last land route by which the Allies could deliver aid to the Chinese Government of Chiang Kai-shek. The only supply route available was the costly and dangerous "Hump" route for transport planes over the Himalayas. In the spring of the Allies were finally able to attempt the reconquest of Burma. A force under General Stilwell fought down the Hukawang Valley and reached the vicinity north of Myitkyina, a key communications center and Japanese stronghold, in May . Meanwhile, the 5307th Composite Unit (Provisional), a reinforced U.S. Army regiment better known as "Merrill's Marauders," had circled and was attacking Myitkyina from the south. Japanese resistance and the onset of the monsoon season in June delayed completion of the operation until August. As another phase of the spring offensive, a British force (the so-called "Chindits") under Maj. Gen. Orde C. Wingate had made a successful airdrop near Kotha in March and proceeded to disrupt Japanese communications in central Burma. At the same time, farther to the south, a British Commonwealth force inflicted a considerable defeat on Japanese forces defending against a drive on Akyab, a port of the Bay of Bengal.

The history of Burma is a long and bloody chronicle of ethnic tensions and interracial feuding. Once upon a time, Burma was one of the wealthiest countries in Southeast Asia, with abundant natural resources and a farming-based economy. Today, after 37 years of isolationist military rule, it is filled with people starving and living in miserable poverty.
A land full of beauty and tragedy, Burma is located in Southeast Asia bordering Thailand, India, Laos, and China. It was a colony of Great Britain for over 200 years, but previous to the British conquest, it was not a unified nation with its current borders. Burma is comprised of eight primary ethnic groups: Karen, Shan, Kachin, Chin, Arakan, Mon, Karenni, and the Burmans, as well as minor groups such as the Ahka, Pulau, and Rohingya. Each province once had its own king, and the residents were deemed his property. Except for occasional border trade, there was very little contact made between the different kingdoms, and every ethnic group had its individual system of governance, beliefs, and culture.
Similar to most colonial countries after the end of the 19th century, there were a series of revolts protesting British occupation. Thhese protests were led by a young student at Rangoon University, named Aung San. He believed that the British could be best defeated by toppling the government. He established ties with the Japanese military which was, at that time, sweeping through Asia. In 1941, San returned from Japanese military training and recruited 30 men to expell the British rulers. Known as the "Thirty Comrades," these men were instrumental in forcing the British to pull out of Burma. Four years later, however, Aung San became aware of Japan's imperialistic goals. Changing sides, San and his fellow revolutionaries joined the Allied forces, and the British re-entered Burma.

Brief History of Burma
Burma's history, even to the present day, has been a struggle for supremacy between warring peoples. Almost all of the country's citizens can trace their roots back to tribes that invaded their resource-rich land. First came the Mons from the east, who established the Buddhist tradition in Burma. Then followed the Pyus, refugees from Tibe; the Burmans from the borders of China and Tibet, and the Shans (also known as Tais), immigrants from Thailand. rd century BC Mons cultivate close ties with India through the port city of Thaton. st century Pyu people settle in upper Burma. th century The Tais invade Upper Burma, attacking the capital Halin in 832 and enslaving the population. Very little mention to be found of the Pyus from this point onwards. th century Mramma people (also known as the Bamars) move down the Ayeyarwady river from the China-Tibet border and establish themselves as the major power in the rice-cultivating region of the north. They fortify Bagan from which they can control the Ayeyarwady river and trade routes between China and India.

FRONT PAGE License Plate History of Burma/Myanmar This page is not meant to be definitive. I’m sure that corrections will need to be made and I hope that readers will feel free to contribute to this page. I have had a long correspondence with a man in Rangoon, Burma. This page is based on that correspondence and the excellent book "Registration Plates of the World, Third Edition". The first thing to clear up is the proper name of the country. Myanmar is Burma in the Burmese language. Myanmar is to Burma what Deutschland is to Germany or Côte d’Ivoire is to Ivory Coast. In 1989 Burma changed its country name to Myanmar on its stamps and much was made of this fact but I’ve noticed that whenever my correspondents refer to their country it is always referred to as Burma. The history of license plates in Burma fall naturally into three periods. Nobody is sure when license plates began to be used in Burma but by the mid-1930’s they were in use. The first period is from around 1930 to 1953. During most of this period the British ruled Burma and plates were in western characters. This continued during the early years of independence. It was not until 1953 that plates in Burmese characters were required. The second period lasted until 1996. The third period began in 1996. A fourth period could be added. From 1941 to 1944 Burma was occupied by the Japanese. It is not known what types of plates were in use during this period. This period is outside the scope of this page. It is important to remember that in Burma there are two types of license plates, registration plates and general number plates. Registration plates are issued to a particular vehicle while general number plates are issued to firms representing vehicle manufacturers. They are used on vehicles until the vehicle is registered by its new owner. Supposedly this takes place within a month or so and the plate is returned to the firm for reuse on another vehicle. In many places this type of plate is called a temporary plate but its use is different in Burma.

of World War II

Introduction
World War II was the largest and most violent armed conflict in the history of mankind. However, the half century that now separates us from that conflict has exacted its toll on our collective knowledge. While World War II continues to absorb the interest of military scholars and historians, as well as its veterans, a generation of Americans has grown to maturity largely unaware of the political, social, and military implications of a war that, more than any other, united us as a people with a common purpose. Highly relevant today, World War II has much to teach us, not only about the profession of arms, but also about military preparedness, global strategy, and combined operations in the coalition war against fascism. To commemorate the nation's 50th anniversary of World War II, the U.S. Army has published a variety of materials to help educate Americans about that momentous experience. These works provide great opportunities to learn about and renew pride in an Army that fought so magnificently in what has been called "the mighty endeavor." World War II was waged on land, on sea, and in the air over several diverse theaters of operation for approximately six years. The following essay is one of a series of campaign studies highlighting those struggles that, with their accompanying suggestions for further reading, are designed to introduce you to one of the Army's significant military feats from that war.

Strong words, but over the course of their brief four-year career (1979-1983), the band delivered the goods in spades. Rykodisc's three-CD re-release campaign of band's entire Ace of Hearts Records catalog includes the 1981 signals, calls, and marches EP (RCD 10339, with the "Academy Fight Song" b/w "Max Ernst" 7" single appended), the groundbreaking 1982 VS. "Statement upon the award of the 2001 Student Peace Prize to Min Ko Naing and the ABFSU"
Date: January 26, 2001 1). On January 25, 2001, the Norway based Student Peace Prize Committee of the International Student Festival in Trondheim (ISFT)- under the theme of "Global Responsibility", awarded the Student Peace Prize to Min Ko Naing and ABFSU for year 2001 . 2). Min Ko Naing (a) Paw Oo Htun is a significant image of the 1988 peoples revolution of Burma. He has also been recognized as the elected chairperson of the All Burma Federation of Student Unions (ABFSU) since the August 1988 student mass conference in Burma, and in subsequent student conferences in 1989 and 1990. ABFSU Chairperson Min Ko Naing was arrested and detained on March 23, 1989 by the military regime and given a long term sentence, which he has served, in solitary confinement, in several prisons. He is now held in Sittwe prison, located in Arakan State, western Burma and there is serious concern for his health. 4). We, the Foreign Affairs' Committee of the All Burma Federation of Student Unions, deeply feel that the Student Peace prize awarded to Min Ko Naing and the ABFSU is an honor to the significant role that Burmese students have played in Burma's struggle, and to the many students who have sacrificed their lives in movements along Burma's history. We also believe that the Burmese students who gave their lives must be recorded in Burma's history.

The bitter experiences of the Karen throughout our history in burma, especiallyduring the Second World War, taught us one lesson.
http://www.rainbowends.org/karen/history.htm
Karen National Union (KNU) :
A Karen History
Preface
We, the Karen of Burma, have been cornered into fighting against ruling Burmese Governments for the past forty-three years. [in 1992] Holding the reins of all organs of the state, and in full control of the press, radio, and television, the successive ruling Burmese Governments from U Nu's AFPFL (Anti-Fascist People's Freedom League) to the present Military Junta headed by General Than Shwe and his State Law and Order Restoration Council (SLORC), have always painted us as black as they can. They have branded us insurgents, warmongers, a handful of border smugglers, black-marketeers and stooges of both the communists and the imperialists. Even so, to the extent of our ability we have always tried to refute the nefarious one-sided Burmese propaganda of false accusations, and make the true facts of our cause known to the world. In fighting against the ruling Burmese Government, we are not being motivated by narrow nationalism, or by ill will towards the Burmese Government or the Burmese people. Our struggle was instigated neither by the capitalist world nor by the communists, as some have falsely accused us. It has an originality completely of its own. Throughout history, the Burmese have been practicing annihilation, absorption and assimilation (3 A's) against the Karen and they are still doing so today. In short, they are waging a genocidal war against us. Thus we have been forced to fight for our very existence and survival. In this document we venture to present a concise outline of the Karens' struggle for freedom, the Karen case, which we consider just, righteous and noble. We hope that through it, the world may come to know the true situation of the Karen, a forgotten people who continue to fight for our freedom intensively, single handedly and without aid of any kind from anyone.

Early civilization in Myanmar dates back to the 1st century with archaeological evidences of the Pyu Kingdoms of Thayekhittaya (Sriksetra), Beikthano (Visnu) and Hanlin. Myanmar entered a period of greatness in the early 11th century when King Anawrahta unified the country and created the first Myanmar Empire with its capital in Bagan. The Empire, which lasted until the end of the 13th century, produced a glorious civilization whose monuments still endure. The second Myanmar Empire with its capital in Bago was created in the middle of the 16th century by King Bayinnaung. The third and last Myanmar Empire was founded by King Alaungpaya in 1752 and had a number of capitals, the last being Mandalay. In the later years of the Empire, Myanmar was annexed by the British in three stages, in 1825, 1852, 1885 and became a British colony. Myanmar was occupied by the Japanese during World War II, and in the postwar period the independence movement, which had begun in the early 20th century, came to a climax and Myanmar attained independence on 4 January 1948.
