  • Andrews, J. R. H. THE SOUTHERN ARK Zoological Discovery in New Zealand 1769-1900
*** The Southern Ark surveys 130 years of discovery, description and illustration of New Zealand's unique fauna. It begins with the voyages of Captain Cook and concludes at the end of the Victorian era.
The fauna was not as large or as exotic as that of some countries, but the Kiwi, the Moa, the Takahe and the Tuatara attracted maximum attention from scientists and public alike and leading nineteenth century naturalists took part in the description of New Zealand species.
John Andrews integrates the writings of Sir Joseph Banks, Sir Richard Owen, the Reverend Richard Taylor, and numerous resident collectors with the fine illustrations of Parkinson, Forster, Lear, Gould, Wolf, Martyn, Keulemans and Donovan. He shows the trials and tribulations of some of the early naturalists and artists, the ways in which they collected and preserved their material, and the ways in which they described and illustrated it.
Abundant illustrations give a clear picture of the technique and progression of natural history art.

Pulp and Adventure Heroes: B Bagley. Bagley was created by Howard Smiley and appeared in Blue Book All-Story Magazine , and possibly other magazines from 1907 to 1909. Bagley is an eccentric inventor whose creations never quite seem to go as planned. He creates a separate-stage rocket, one actually plausibly described, but it lands in South Dakota rather than the moon. (Bagley and his friends are initially fooled by the landscape, of course, into thinking they've actually landed on the moon) Bagley creates an earth borer that gets three miles down but is repelled by a pocket of natural gas. Bagley creates a super airplane, but the controls end up getting jammed, leaving the plane to fly in circles until it runs out of fuel, thirty years in the future. And so on. Ruth Lenore Marting created the Baileys under the name of "Hilea Bailey;" they appeared in four books beginning with What Night Will Bring (1939). The Baileys were a married pair of American amateur sleuths. Bailey Twins The Bailey Twins (don't know their names) were created by divers hands and appeared in the five-book "Bailey Twins" series which appeared in 1930 and began with The Bailey Twins at Farnham Hall . The Twins were military cadets who encountered adventure and criminous furriners at Farnam Hall, in the Philippines, and at an army base.

Kennedy is a reporter for the Free Press Macdonald, Lynn. Lynn Macdonald was created by Kay Strahan and appeared in seven novels, beginning with The Desert Moon (1928). She is a red-haired "crime analyst."

    CHAPTER FIRST.
The End of a much-applauded Speech. - The Presentation of Dr. Samuel Ferguson. - Excelsior . - Full-length Portrait of the Doctor. - A Fatalist convinced. - A Dinner at the Travellers' Club. - Several Toasts for the Occasion.
There was a large audience assembled on the 14th of January, 1862, at the session of the Royal Geographical Society, No. 3 Waterloo Place, London. The president, Sir Francis M - - , made an important communication to his colleagues, in an address that was frequently interrupted by applause.
This rare specimen of eloquence terminated with the following sonorous phrases bubbling over with patriotism:
"England has always marched at the head of nations" (for, the reader will observe, the nations always march at the head of each other), "by the intrepidity of her explorers in the line of geographical discovery." (General assent). "Dr. Samuel Ferguson, one of her most glorious sons, will not reflect discredit on his origin." ("No, indeed!" from all parts of the hall.)
"This attempt, should it succeed" ("It will succeed!"), "will complete and link together the notions, as yet disjointed, which the world entertains of African cartology" (vehement applause); "and, should it fail, it will, at least, remain on record as one of the most daring conceptions of human genius!" (Tremendous cheering.)

It is a long low stretch of land, carefully cultivated, and celebrated as the place where Mendez Pinto landed when he found his way to Japan in 1543. Until modern times firearms were colloquially known in Japan as " Tanega-shima," in allusion to the fact that they were introduced by Pinto. An authoritative biography is Samuel Tyler's Memoir of Roger Brooke Taney (Baltimore, 1872). TANGA (" the sail "), a seaport of German East Africa, lying opposite the island of Pemba in 5° 6' S., 39° 7' E. The town is regularly laid out on elevated ground on the southern shore of Tanga Bay, and has a population of about 6000. Among the public buildings are the administrator's residence, the hospital, the boma (barracks), Protestant and Catholic churches and the government and mission schools. Tanga is the port of the Usambara district, where are many thriving plantations. The harbour is entered by a broad channel five to eight fathoms deep. It is a port of call for the German mail steamers, and the starting-point of a railway to the Usambara highlands.

He graduated with his B.A. 1714, Trinity College, Dublin and Ordination about 1719. Dramatis Personae
    Aaron Abulafia
A cabalist based in Whitechapel. Edwards consulted him with questions about golems in Jewish tradition (after hearing of the ``Limehouse Golem'' on the streets). This lead to the investigation of Mina Bergson , who had stolen the skull of the murderer John Williams from a tavern in an effort to build a homonculus. However, this was apparently unrelated to the Limehouse Golem. Months later, the Golden Dawn confessed to the theft and attempted creation but the ritual failed and they burned the remains. Soon after, we consulted Abulafia in finding a kosher butcher who would be suitable for ritual killing this for sacrificing a bull in the basement of Milverton's lair to sanctify the place as a figure of the Sun/Mithra.
    The Afterlife Club
A set of patients of Dr. Konrad Lorenz , who were altered and presumably made immortal by his experiments. They all are officially died, but their burials were apparently falsified. Their purpose remains unknown. They had an underground home under a hotel owned by Philip Ashcroft which was apparently destroyed in January 1889. Several members apparently survived, including Dr. Victor Gotham who now haunts the East End.
Lorenz's notes give the names: Sir Philip Ashcroft ; Catherine Boyle ; Dr. Peter
