January 8, 2002
President Leitzel's Remarks
Good afternoon and welcome to the University of New Hampshire on this exceedingly significant occasion. Today, we welcome the President of the United States to our campus. We have had vice presidents visitin fact, Vice President George Herbert Walker Bush was here in 1987 as our commencement speakerwe have had wives of presidents, Presidential candidates from every conceivable party, but not a sitting president for many years. Welcome, President George W. Bush. It is a great pleasure for the University to have you on our campus. And, welcome to all of you who have joined us today. Today is a benchmark day for education. This morning, in Ohio, President Bush signed an education reform package, which is the largest educational initiative undertaken since the War on Poverty in the 1960s. We are especially proud that Senator Judd Gregg, from the great State of New Hampshire, sponsored this initiative in the U. S. Senate. Now there will be new ways to insure that all children achieve at the highest levels possible. The reform initiative provided in the new education bill had bipartisan support in Congress demonstrating that education is not a political party issue in our countryit is an issue that affects our children and the future of our nation. These historic reforms will ensure that every child has a chance for a bright future, not just for themselves but for their communities and their families.

George Herbert Walker Bush was born June 12, 1924, in Milton, Mass., to Prescott and Dorothy Bush. The family later moved to Connecticut. The youth studied at the elite Phillips Academy in Andover, Mass. In 1945 Bush married Barbara Pierce of Rye, N.Y., daughter of a magazine publisher. With his bride, Bush moved to Texas instead of entering his father's investment banking business. There he founded his oil company and by 1980 reported an estimated wealth of $1.4 million. Throughout his whole career, Bush had the backing of an established family, headed by his father, Prescott Bush, who was elected to the Senate from Connecticut in 1952. The family helped the young patrician become established in his early business ventures, a rich uncle raising most of the capital required for founding the oil company.

Bush pledges $200m to Aids fund:
US President George W Bush has announced a $200m donation to a global fund to fight Aids and other diseases afflicting poor countries
The fund has been set up by the United Nations with the aim of raising between $7bn and $10bn - the United States is the first country to commit to it. Referring to the spread of Aids in Africa, Mr Bush said: "In a part of the world where so many have suffered from war and want and famine, these latest tribulations are the cruellest of fates. We have the power to help." But Aids activists have criticised the American donation - which will also be used to help fight malaria and tuberculosis - as paltry. War chest President Bush said the fund would seek to form "partnerships across borders and across public and private sectors". Private corporations and individuals would also be tapped for funds, along with international foundations, non-government organisations and faith-based groups. The announcement was made at a White House ceremony to greet the visiting Nigerian President, Olesegun Obasanjo.

U.S. President George Bush Sends Ramadan Greeting
to Muslims Around the World
President of the United States George W. Bush extends greetings to Muslims around the world as the holy month of Oraza begins. U.S. Ambassador to Turkmenistan Laura E. Kennedy and the Embassy of the United States in Turkmenistan also extend warmest wishes to the Muslim citizens of Turkmenistan. Tonight Ambassador Kennedy hosts an Agyz Achar dinner for invited guests to celebrate this holy time. Text of President Bush's statement: I send greetings to Muslims in the United States and around the world as you observe the holy month of Ramadan. Islam is a peace-loving faith that is practiced by more than one billion people, including millions of American Muslims. These proud citizens contribute to the diversity that makes our country strong, and the United States is grateful for the friendship and support of many Muslim Nations that are vital partners in the global coalition to fight against terrorism. The Qur'an teaches that Ramadan is a time for fasting, prayer, worship, and contemplation. Muslims observe this month by renewing their dedication to caring for those in need, doing good deeds, and strengthening family and community ties. These actions reflect many of the values that Muslims share with people of other faiths across our Nation and around the world, including courage, compassion, and service.

Quote by U.S. President George W. Bush on black carbon
On May 18, 2001, the Office of the President of the United States requested and received a draft copy of the paper, "Control of fossil-fuel particulate black carbon and organic matter, possibly the most effective method of slowing global warming," first drafted in August, 2000. One of the findings of the paper was that controlling fossil-fuel black carbon (BC) plus organic matter (OM) was possibly the most effective method of slowing global warming over the next several decades in terms of the speed and magnitude of its effect. The paper also cited health and mortality problems associated with aerosol particles. As such, the paper concluded, "Reductions in BC+OM emissions from fossil-fuel sources will not only slow global warming, but also improve health." On June 11, 2001, U.S. President George W. Bush presented a speech in which he explained why the United States would not take part in the Kyoto Protocol. In the speech, he stated, in part, "Kyoto also failed to address two major pollutants that have an impact on warming, black soot and tropospheric ozone. Both are proven health hazards. Reducing both would not only address climate change, but also dramatically improve people's health."

NEWS YOU WON'T FIND ON CNN Iraqi families file Charges against Former U.S. president George Bush for War Crimes BRUSSELS, March 18 - With a new U.S.-led aggression hanging over their heads, seven Iraqi families filed a lawsuit in Belgium Tuesday, March 18, against former U.S. president George Bush and three other U.S. leaders for crimes perpetrated during the 1991 first Gulf War. U.S. officials immediately slammed the lawsuit, linked to the killing of some 400 civilians in the bombing of a Baghdad civilian bunker, as "totally baseless" and "clearly political." The lawsuit cites George Bush, the father of the current U.S. president, Vice President Dick Cheney, Secretary of State Colin Powell and retired U.S. Army General Norman Schwarzkopf, who led operation Desert Storm against Baghdad, said socialist lawmaker Patrick Moriau. Cheney was U.S. defense secretary at the time of the first Gulf War, while Powell was chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, reported Agence France-Presse (AFP). "We are convinced that mistakes will be made again, and we want to signal that all legal means will be taken so that justice is done," said Moriau, a member of an Iraqi-Belgian friendship association.

Speech by US President George W. Bush to the German Bundestag, Berlin, May 23, 2002
President, thank you very much for your kind introduction. And thank you for giving me this chance to be here today. President Rau, thank you very much; Chancellor Schroeder. I understand former Chancellor Kohl is here. I want to thank the members of the Bundestag. How are you, sir?
I was all nervous when the President told me that you all are on vacation. I can just imagine how my Congress would react if I called them back to hear a speech of mine when they were on vacation. But thank you for coming. I'm so honored to be here. And my wife, Laura, and I really appreciate the hospitality that you've shown us.
I've had the pleasure of welcoming your Chancellor to Washington three times, and we have established a strong relationship. Mr. Chancellor, I'm grateful.
And now I am honored to visit this great city. The history of our time is written in the life of Berlin. In this building, fires of hatred were set that swept across the world. To this city, Allied planes brought food and hope during 323 days and nights of siege. Across an infamous divide, men and women jumped from tenement buildings and crossed through razor wire to live in freedom or to die in the attempt. One American President came here to proudly call himself a citizen of Berlin. Another President dared the Soviets to "tear down that wall." And on a night in November, Berliners took history into their hands, and made your city whole.

http://www.expandnato.org/bushbrussels.html
June 13 - Remarks by US President George W. Bush at the Meeting of the North Atlantic Council NATO HQ, Brussels (nato.int) The President: Mr. Secretary General, thank you very much. It's an honor for me to be here. It's an honor to say hello to folks who I've had the honor of meeting before. And it's a real pleasure to meet other leaders in the free world.
Our nations established NATO to provide security for the free peoples of Europe and North America; to build a grand alliance of freedom to defend values which were won at great cost. We've succeeded in part.
The NATO alliance deterred the Soviet Union. It provided the time and space for free peoples to defeat communism. And it brought the Cold -War to a bloodless end. Now, we have a great opportunity to build a Europe whole, free and at peace, with this grand alliance of liberty at its very core.
That work has begun. By bringing in new members, we extend the security and stability through central Europe. By establishing the partnership for peace, we reached out across central and eastern Europe and Eurasia. By our actions in the Balkans, we halted ethnic cleansing in the heart of Europe and halted a dictator in the process.
Yet, there is more to do. We must strengthen our alliance, modernize our forces and prepare for new threats. We must expand cooperation with our partners, including Russia and the Ukraine. And we must extend our hands and open our hearts to new members, to build security for all of Europe. Next year, we meet in the ancient capital of a new democracy, our ally. Prague will host our next summit in November 2002. In preparation for the meeting, we must affirm our enduring commitments by preparing for the challenges of our time.

U.S. President George Bush Urges American Children to Help Afghan Children
October 11, 2001- The following are the remarks of United States President George Bush: "Let me conclude by one final statement. Thank you all for coming. Before we leave, I want to make a special request to the children of America. I ask you to join in a special effort to help the children of Afghanistan. Their country has been through a great deal of war and suffering. Many children there are starving and are severely malnourished. One in three Afghan children is orphan, almost half suffer chronic malnutrition, and we can and must help them. We've created a special relief effort that will be supervised by the Red Cross.
