06:14 PM May. 28, 1998 PT Children's book author Mercer Mayer, famous for his scribbly looking "critter" hairball characters, is tootin' mad and he's not going to take it anymore. His company, Big Tuna New Media, is suing videogame distributor GT Interactive , alleging breach of contract.
Story Tools
Today's Top 5 Stories
The suit, filed on Tuesday in US District Court in New York, alleges that GT Interactive, famed for titles like Doom, Duke Nukem, and the forthcoming Beavis and Butthead Do Hollywood, failed to fully pay Big Tuna for the CD-ROMs it licensed to the company; tried to force Big Tuna to default on its contractual obligation; and damaged the reputations of Mayer and Big Tuna by mismarketing their products and stealing their product designs. The suit seeks nearly US$44 million in damages, $23 million of which are royalties and contractual payments allegedly owed to Mayer.

Toys Take Manhattan
05:03 AM Feb. 10, 1998 PT NEW YORK - To understand the economics of fun, you'll want to visit the 95th American International Toy Fair this week in New York City. A carnival atmosphere prevails on the sidewalks along Broadway in the city's Flatiron District, with Mario of Mario Brothers fame mingling with passersby, the Nabisco Cool School Bus parked on a side street, and a stilt-walker vying for attention with the guy handing out fliers for Flash Dancers Adult Entertainment Bars.

But inside the handful of toy showrooms that house the fair, the mood is dramatically different. Here, talk of packaging, promotions, price points, and point-of-purchase displays dominates. Some 20,000 toy buyers from 50 countries have descended upon the city to determine which toys will turn the most profits in 1998, and they mean business. Last year, toys racked up US$22.5 billion in retail sales, according to the

But Broderbund's ''Living Books'' have impressed us: They're entertaining, educational, and easy-to-use - at least most of them are. Broderbund has been developing original Mac and PC titles since the early 1980s. But the company also has been transposing well-loved children's stories into interactive software for nearly a decade, periodically revamping them to keep up with advances in multimedia technology. The company's current offerings for younger kids (ages 2 to 7) includes three Dr. Seuss books, two Arthur stories, and one title from Mercer Mayer's ''Little Critter'' series. Every ''Living Book'' is introduced by the story's main characters. It then gives young users (or their parents) two options: ''Read to Me'' and ''Let Me Play.'' If the child clicks on Read to Me, the program will read the story aloud, highlighting each printed word in the text as it is spoken. At the end of each numbered page, the program shows a few animated tricks. While the disc plays, Mommy and Daddy are then free to do something else.

Brooklyn Dream Job: Help Kids Learn Online
Page 1 of 1
11:55 AM Oct. 28, 1997 PT You might not know it from reading the newspaper lately, but public libraries are actually doing something with their Net connections besides brewing up controversy about kids, porn, and pedophiles. If you believe everything you read, you probably think that instead of focusing on developing compelling Net programming or even reshelving books, librarians are spending all their time policing pixels. The Brooklyn Public Library is living proof that this isn't the case. For almost a year, the director of Brooklyn Library's literacy program, Kevin Allard-Mendelson, has been working on a pet project with two of Brooklyn's other cultural centers - the Brooklyn Children's Museum and the Brooklyn Museum of Art - to synthesize into Web-savvy packagesthe three institutions' wealth of information. The trio's mission is to weave their resources together into Web-based exhibits on a site aimed at local schools and the general public. With financial backing from the Brooklyn city council, the project is off to a good start. And now Kevin is shopping around for a project coordinator to act as a liaison between the three institutions, communicate with schools, and generally oversee the project.

06:34 PM Jun. 24, 1998 PT The Walt Disney Co.'s ( DIS ) Internet push hasn't slowed since it bought a stake in search engine Infoseek ( SEEK ) last week. Disney Online launched a kids' search service called Disney's Internet Guide (DIG) on Wednesday, which is available on the Disney Online site . The site is part and parcel of the company's goal to become the number one portal for kids and families online.

"DIG shovels through the dirt and rocks to unveil the pure gold," Disney Online president Richard Wolpert said in a statement. The site which will also appear on Infoseek as a search option for kids and families certainly does sport its share of mining icons. The "rocks" in this metaphor are pornographic and other "inappropriate" sites that many parents do not want their kids to see. Similar services like Yahoo's ( YHOO Yahooligans typically serve up chosen Web sites so that no nasty nuggets are uncovered for the eyes of the kids at home.

Geek Dream Job: Make Swiss Bank Tech Hum
05:45 PM Dec. 11, 1997 PT It's impossible to describe Zurich without gushing. A small, beautifully preserved old European city on the shores of a picturesque lake just south of the Alps separating Switzerland from Germany, Zurich is a clean, efficient city. And while built around the legendary Swiss banking industry, Zurich also boasts a small but boisterous night life, with bistros and techno clubs open all hours. Nowadays, Swiss-based financial institutions also operate around the clock internationally, and require cutting-edge information technology to keep their worldwide operations in synch. Rather than trying to stay on top of the technology themselves, the banks contract hotshot firms like Open Systems AG to roll out new IT for them. Florian Gutzwiller, the 28-year-old CEO of Open Systems, has his hands full with interdisciplinary contracts for banks, hospitals, and other organizations in need of fast, savvy implementation of standards-based infotech for the next millennium. The explosion of demand for Internet solutions and services gives Open Systems more opportunities than the company can currently take on, allowing it to choose the most profitable and exciting work. "One of our customers in the financial industry asked us to put together a new network security design that would allow all business units to expose their own services on their own infrastructure on the Internet," Florian explains in a cheerful Swiss-German accent, failing to point out that the organization is one of the largest global financial operations in the world.
