When the Roman emperor Jovian died suddenly in 364 AD, officials chose a high-ranking military officer named Valentinian to succeed him. To help keep order in the huge empire, Valentinian I split it in half and made his younger brother Valens emperor of the East. This was not the first time that co-emperors had reigned over the empire, but it was the beginning of a permanent separation of the empire into two realms, East and West. Three decades later, East and West Rome were briefly reunited under the leadership of a single emperor, Theodosius I. But upon his death in 395, the empire was divided between his sons Arcadius and Honorius, and from this time on East and West were ruled separately. The Western empire was overthrown by barbarians in 476, but the Eastern empire lasted for almost a thousand years more. Over time it evolved into a society very different from that of ancient Rome, and later historians gave it a new name: the Byzantine Empire. The word Byzantine comes from Byzantium, the original name of the empire's splendid capital, Constantinople (modern Istanbul, in Turkey). The Byzantine Empire itself is also called Byzantium. It included Asia Minor, the Balkan Peninsula, and varying other territories.

The Dark Ages Byzantium means Istanbul Hagia Sophia ... of the Church A Great Empire; The Byzantines In the year 395, when the Roman emperor Theodosum I divided the empire and placed his son Arcadius at the head of the Eastern side and his other son Honorius on the throne of the Western side, he could not have known what kinds of effects this action was to have on the future. The Western Roman Empire, with Honorius at its head, was to have a short life. The Eastem Roman Empire, however, was to last almost one thousand years until it was finally put to an end by the Ottoman Empire Mehmet II when he conquered the city of Istanbul in 1453. The city of Byzantium was chosen to be the capitol of the Eastern Roman Empire. Sixty five years later, however, the name of the city was changed to Constantinople in honor of its founder, Constantine. Even though this radical change was made in the concept of the empire, the Byzantines always referred to themselves during their one thousand year long history as the Roman Empire and their nation as the Nation of Rome. After the collapse of the empire, however, historians began to refer to this empire as the "Byzantine" Empire and so it is remembered today. This empire began in 330 and lasted until 1453, for 1123 years. A struggle between Moslems and Christians began to arise in the Middle Ages. Those warriors known as the Crusaders were the most concrete example of the struggle between these two major religious beliefs.

The capital city, Constantinople, had been founded as the capital of Rome by the Emperor Constantine, but a uniquely Greek or Byzantine character to the Roman Empire can be distinguished as early as Diocletian. Shema Yisrael, Adonai Eloheinu, Adonai Echad! In 614 C.E., The Persians invaded Palestine and with the help of The Jews defeated The Byzantines. For this, The Persians, allowed The Jews to live in Jerusalem. Unfourtunently, in 629 C.E., The Byzantines returned and defeated The Persians. They brought back with them their horrible ways, and restored Christianity in Jerusalem, and renewed the ban on Jews living there. After the start of Islam, The Arabs conquered Syria, Palestine, Egypt, Persia, and much of North Africa, in The Jihad, The Islamic Holy War. They captured Jerusalem in 638 C.E.. Between 688 and 691, they began their occupation of The Temple Mount, Judaism's holiest site in The World, and built The Mosque of Omar. However, this occupation wasn't totally negative. It was better than the rule of The Byzantines. Conditions in Palestine improved. Jews were once again permitted to enter the city and pray at The Kotel. A small Jewish community in Jerusalem soon formed. Under Arab rule between 638 and 1099, Jerusalem was ruled from Damascus, Baghdad, or Cairo. In 1071, Jerusalem was captured by The Turks. They persecuted Christian pilgrims to Jerusalem. This lead Christian Europe to start The Crusades against Muslim rule in Palestine. In 1095, The Catholic Church decided to free Palestine from Muslim rule. As these Anti-Semitic crusaders marched to Palestine, they killed Jews on the way. They attacked Palestine from The North and from The Mediterranean Sea. When they reached Jerusalem, they slaughtered its Jewish and Arab inhabitants. The Crusaders ruled Palestine for 88 years until Saladin, the Muslim ruler recaptured it. Saladin's court physician was Moses Maimonides. In 1291, The Muslims captured Akko and put an end to Christian rule in Palestine. There were 6 more Crusades and fortunently, they all ended in a Christian defeat.
