hardware for telecommunications. Almost any type of computer can usedfor telecommunications. Another route cable modems and ISDN.
http://fcit.usf.edu/telecom/chap3.htm
There are two requirements for establishing a dial-up connection to a telecommunications network such as FIRN. First, you must have the necessary hardware (a computer with a modem) connected properly. Second, you must have the appropriate software (computer programs) installed on your computer.
Hardware for telecommunications
Almost any type of computer can used for telecommunications. A high-end computer is strongly recommended if you are planning to connect to the World Wide Web. One advantage of exchanging information through telecommunications is that different types of computers can communicate directly with each other. In other words, a Macintosh computer can send information to a Windows computer just as easily as it can to another Macintosh computer.
Phone Line
Another issue to consider is that some of the newer telephone systems are not compatible with standard modems. A school or business telephone that has a variety of features, such as call-waiting, voice mail, and call-parking, may not be compatible with a modem.
Modem
Data transmitted through telecommunications usually incorporates standard telephone lines as the primary carrier for the analog sound waves. One of the impediments in this process is that information on computers is stored in digital form (bits and bytes). In order to

49. Cable Modems Put Industry On Fast Track
it's developing appropriate content, hardware or infrastructure during the transition. .modems make headway in marketplace. Motorola's CyberSURFR cable modem.
http://www.cedmagazine.com/ced/9601/9601b.htm
By Michael Lafferty The cable television industry's intent to deploy high-speed data modems was shouted out loudly and ratified by nearly every large MSO during last month's Western Cable Show, where an unprecedented show of support for universal communication standards took place.
Operators and vendors alike appeared to be in lockstep during a press conference at which they called for a set of common network interfaces and protocols (see Figure 1 ). Dr. John Malone, CEO of TCI, said such protocols are absolutely critical if computer users are to continue to be interconnected over broadband networks just as they are today via narrowband phone lines. While the show of force should rightly be considered a watershed event, so should the fact that this is the first time cable operators have embraced the retail model where consumers own the hardware. In the past, mostly for security reasons, the cable TV industry has been reluctant to give up any control of the devices that are connected to its networks. Furthermore, such commonality will drive costs down, allowing consumers to one day purchase the modem at retail outlets at prices below $200, according to Jim Chiddix, senior VP of engineering and technology at Time Warner Cable. "I see no reason why these modems, when mass produced, should cost any more than (today's analog) set-top box," he said.

Hardware and Software Companies to Cooperate With Microsoft
On Public Networks Platform At the National Cable Television Association Show, Microsoft Demonstrates Network Solutions With Participating Companies LOS ANGELES - April 30, 1996 -
The Microsoft public networks platform allows network operators the flexibility to choose open, interoperable software and hardware for their network infrastructures in meeting their business and residential customers' needs. Microsoft is working with industry leaders in the areas of cable modems, ADSL modems, systems management, network equipment, systems integration and network backbone providers. The platform builds on the Windows NT Server network operating system with Microsoft Internet Information Server; "Catapult," a proxy and caching server; and the Microsoft Internet Explorer browser. Future capabilities and applications include network quality of service, subscriber management, systems and network management, media streaming, authoring tools, and news and e-mail services. "Here at Cable '96, we are pleased to announce relationships that will enable network operators to provide users with the high-speed Internet connectivity they want today," said Craig Mundie, senior vice president of the consumer platforms division at Microsoft. "Our goal is to remove the complexities confronting both cable and telephone companies in delivering rich Internet services."

Buying the right hardware
To successfully install and run a home or small office network, you need to have the right hardware installed in each computer. This hardware includes modems, network adapters, network cables, hubs , or phone cables. The table below will help you determine the type of network to install and the equipment you need. For a comprehensive list of hardware supported by Windows operating systems, see Compatible Hardware and Software in Help and Support Center. Home Phoneline Network Adapter (HPNA) In a home phoneline network, you use your home's phone lines to connect your computers together. Each computer must have an HPNA that is plugged into a phone jack. Every phone jack in your home becomes a port on the network. Hardware How many? Comment Home phoneline network adapter (HPNA) One for each computer on your network The Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) host computer typically uses an Ethernet network adapter if you are using an external DSL or cable modem If you have an internal modem, or an external 28.8 or 56 kilobits per second (Kbps) modem, you only need one network adapter.

Cable Modem Installation
Background: It was clearly time to get a higher-speed home internet connection. In the three-and-a-half years since I had arrived at Berkeley, the average throughput I was getting from home through the dial-up lines attached to U.C. Berkeley's faculty modem pool had declined from an average of about 18,000 bits-per-second to about 8,000 bits-per-secondand that was not counting the increasingly-common experience of having to put my modem on auto-redial for half an hour to get connected at all. Increasing congestionmodem purchases and maintenance not keeping up with demandwas taking its toll. (And this was the level of service in the (privileged) faculty modem pool: when I asked my graduate students what things were like in the non-faculty home-IP model pools, they assured me that I really did not want to know.) This level of service began to feel more and more unacceptable. In part this was because of relative-service-speed considerations: while my Berkeley dial-up connection was falling in average throughput from about 18,000 to about 8,000 bits-per-second, my wife's AOL account was increasing in average throughput from about 4,000 bits-per-second (when she could log on at all) to a fairly reliable 36,000 bits-per-second or more. In part this was because of the increased availability of truly high-speed connections: both TCI Athome and Pacific Bell (and other DSL providers) were promising sustained 1,000,000 bit-per-second connections. In part this was because of the increasingly-large amount of interesting stuff on the internet.
