Week View Intel driving low-cost cable modems By Jim Davis Staff Writer, CNET News.com February 16, 1999, 4:00 a.m. PT High-speed cable modems may become cheaper in the near future as a result of an Intel initiative now coming to light. Intel is working with Libit Signal Processing and possibly other partners to produce a futuristic breed of devices called "host-based" cable modems. The devices would use the computer's main microprocessor and memory for some functions, rather than requiring the separate processor, memory, and operating system normally needed by a stand-alone modem. Because fewer chips are needed, they are potentially less expensive and easier to upgrade than traditional hardware modems. The effort comes at a propitious time for the cable movement: After a long and arduous process, cable modems based on industry-approved standards should be available by the end of the quarter. As a result, the long hoped-for move to sell cable modems in a retail market may finally start to develop in 1999.

cable modem Last modified: Friday, February 08, 2002 A modem designed to operate over cable TV lines. Because the coaxial cable used by cable TV provides much greater bandwidth than telephone lines, a cable modem can be used to achieve extremely fast access to the World Wide Web . This, combined with the fact that millions of homes are already wired for cable TV, has made the cable modem something of a holy grail for

DOCSIS Last modified: Monday, January 07, 2002 Developed by CableLabs and approved by the ITU in March 1998, Data Over Cable Service Interface Specification defines interface standards for cable modems and supporting equipment. With certification from CableLabs, manufacturers will be able to produce cable modems for retail, so consumers no longer have to depend on leased cable modems from their cable providers. Other devices that recognize and support the DOCSIS standard include HDTVs and Web enabled set-top boxes for regular televisions. DOCSIS specifies downstream traffic transfer rates between 27 and 36 Mbps over a radio frequency (RF) path in the 50 MHz to 750+ MHz range, and upstream traffic tranfer rates between 320 Kbps and 10 Mbps over a RF path between 5 and 42 MHz. But, because data over cable travels on a shared loop, individuals will see tranfer rates drop as more users gain access.

How worthwhile is it for a student to have his or her own computer? This is an individual decision depending on financial resources, personal priorities, and course of study. Certain departments may have specific recommendations or requirements for computers. Individuals are encouraged to consult with their advisors as soon as they have chosen a particular curriculum. If you already own a computer, by all means bring it with you to Auburn. If you don't, we encourage you to buy one. Here are some points to consider:
    • Having your own computer can put you in the best possible position to succeed at Auburn University.
    • Prepare for life. Wherever you go when you leave Auburn, computers will be in use. Whatever your chosen field, if you have computer skills, you will be that much more qualified to step into an employment position.
    • You don't have to be in a technical field to use a computer. No matter what your field of study, computer skills are a must have.
