California Genealogy
As early as the 1500s California was claimed by various nations, including Mexico, Spain, Russia and England. In 1769 Spain established the first permanent settlement near San Diego. When Spain granted Mexico its independence in the 1820s, California was included. American settlers began moving in in the early 1840s and war broke out with Mexico in 1846, and the American settlers set up the Republic of California. In 1848 the United States acquired California from Mexico, just in time for the Gold Rush, during which settlers poured into the area, raising the population to 250,000 by 1852. (Statehood was granted in 1850.) Chinese immigration followed in the 1860s with workers brought in to build the transcontinental railroad, which was completed in 1869leading to a new wave of settlers from the Eastern U.S. Real estate boomed and another wave followed in the 1880s. Recent immigration has largely been from Mexico.

California Pioneer Project
The California Pioneer List (CPL) is a list of settlers to California who migrated to or were born in California prior to 1880 (included in the 1880 California Census) and obtained from those sent (e-mailed) directly from individuals doing genealogical research. Note that the list is currently under development . We will update the list every few weeks. Please bear with us. Depending upon submssions we reserve the right to alter, amend or modify the chronological period of time coverd by this list. The California Pioneer List (CPL) works much like a mailing list. Each entry in the CPL is given with a Contact. You can find each Contact identified in the Contacts file. Each Contact in the Contacts file is given with a minimum of an e-mail address. In most cases, the contributor's "snail" mail address is also given. If the e-mail address bounces (user unknown) when the site manager checks them, then the entry is deleted. The California Pioneer List is not a permanent record unless the Contacts (submitter) keep the moderator informed about address changes.
