Front Porch is a pretty unusual place. We all share many values, but each community is distinct. Each one has its own flavor, its own personality, its own history and setting. And each community is made up of individuals who have their own point of view about the world. We value this diversity, and we see it as an important part of understanding who we are: a community of communities.

Geography Baja California (English LOWER CALIFORNIA) is a peninsula, in northwestern Mexico, bounded north by the United States, east by the Gulf of California (Sea of Cortez) and the state of Sonora, and south and west by the Pacific Ocean. The peninsula is approximately 760 miles (1,220 km) long and 25 to 150 miles (40 to 240 km) wide, with a total area of 55,366 square miles (143,396 square km). Politically, it is divided into the mexican states of Baja California and Baja California Sur. Baja California has 2,038 miles of coastline, with many islands on both sides. The climate is predominantly dry and very warm. Rain is scarse in most parts, especially at the coast of the Gulf of California. Baja California has great natural beauty. Its territory includes impressive mountains, huge desert areas, fertile valleys and extensive coasts of singular abundance. Where coasts meet the desert you can find some of the most exotic landscapes on earth.

Welcome to the California Geography Archive of the California Geographical Survey. This collection of materials is being created by Dr. William Bowen to provide California's public and parochial school teachers with a source of free maps and other information suitable for supplementing classroom instruction in geography and related subjects. Although the initial focus will necessarily be on basic resources, teachers are encouraged to communicate their interests to the Survey so that very real needs will be served. Please forward your ideas to William Bowen if you wish specific issues to be addressed.

he California Geography Program and its Field Study Program was started in 1984 at La Puente High in response to meeting the A to F entrance requirements for admittance to the University of California system. Under the A to F requirement on Social Sciences it is clearly pointed out that students at the high school level must have field and laboratory work in their social science courses. California Geography is presently the only social science course that offers a true laboratory and field work setting. T he California Geography is a demanding and more in depth Geography course which focuses upon California. The course covers university level material. With the introduction of GIS, the class will take on added dimension in its instruction. The text book and field study book for the course has been written by the instruction an touches upon all areas of Geographic education. A ll materials and funds for the California Geography course are provided by the California Geography field Study Program, Inc., a non-profit educational program supporting California Geographic instruction at La Puente High School. the organization is registered with the California Secretary of State and the United States Internal Revenue Service. C alifornia Geography Field Study Program, Inc,. is a non-profit program incorporated under the laws of California. It falls within the meaning of Sections 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. Course Description AND OBJECTIVES
This course is designed to highlight California’s diverse regions through lectures, a field trip, slides and small group presentations. Landform provinces within California, as well as the human occupants within these provinces, will be explored. A special section will be devoted to California water and energy. The California Gold Rush will also be examined for its social, economic and cultural impacts on California. California will be viewed at several levels: individual places, groups of places (subregions) and, finally, broad regions themselves. Eleven geographic regions, based on landform provinces, land uses, and other traits, are recognized as the framework for this course. Through the use of geographic tools (maps, slides, charts), lectures, and a field trip, a regional exploration of California will be completed.

SOUTHLAND CALIFORNIA SUMMARIZED HISTORY, FACTS, AND DEMOGRAPHICS CALIFORNIA GEOGRAPHY Natural Regions California lies within four major natural regions, or physical geographic provinces. They are the Pacific Border province, the Sierra-Cascade province, the Basin and Range province, and the Lower Californian province.
The Pacific Border province, also called the Coastal Uplands, extends nearly the entire length of western California. It can be subdivided into four sections, the Klamath Mountains, the Coast Ranges, the Transverse Ranges, and the Great Central Valley.
The Klamath Mountains, partly in Oregon, occupy the northwestern corner of California. They include a number of separate ranges, such as the Salmon and Trinity mountains, and form a rugged forested area that rises to 2,700 m (9,000 ft).
The Coast Ranges parallel the Pacific Coast in a complex series of ridges and valleys. The only major low-lying pass through the ranges is formed by San Francisco Bay and its tributary bays, as they carry the waters of California's largest river, the Sacramento, into the Pacific Ocean at the Golden Gate. The principal range is the Diablo Range, which flanks the Central Valley and rises to 1,500 m (5,000 ft) above sea level. Between the interior Diablo Range and the coastal Santa Lucia Range lies the long Salinas valley.
The Transverse Ranges, so named because they run transverse or perpendicular (west to east) to the north-south oriented Coast Ranges, extend from Point Conception, on the coast, roughly eastward to the Mojave Desert. These generally narrow ranges increase in elevation toward the east, where Mount San Gorgonio in the San Bernardino Mountains rises to 3,505 m (11,499 ft) above sea level. The Transverse Ranges partly enclose low but often hilly Los Angeles and its suburbs.

SOUTHLAND CALIFORNIA SUMMARIZED HISTORY, FACTS, AND DEMOGRAPHICS CALIFORNIA GEOGRAPHY
California, the third largest state in the Union, has a total area of 411,469 sq km (158,869 sq mi), including 6,926 sq km (2,674 sq mi) of inland water and 575 sq km (222 sq mi) of coastal waters over which it has jurisdiction. The state is roughly rectangular in shape, although the southern two-thirds bends in a dogleg toward the east. It has a maximum distance north to south of 1,052 km (654 mi) and an east-to-west extent of 945 km (587 mi), although even locations along the state's eastern border are less than 350 km (220 mi) from the ocean. California's mean elevation is about 880 m (2,900 ft)
Much of California lies in a geologically unstable area, crisscrossed by fault, or fracture, lines in the Earth's crust. The great San Andreas Fault extends for 1,000 km (600 mi) northwestward from the Imperial Valley to Point Arena and out to sea. This fault line has caused several notable earthquakes in the recorded history of California. The most widely publicized was that of April 18, 1906, which resulted in the destruction of central San Francisco. Although major earthquakes are rare, landslides, mudflows, minor tremors, and cracks in the ground occur regularly.
