The metropolitan area spreads out from the Pacific Ocean to Southern California's upper and lower deserts over valleys, mountains, canyons and coastal plains. Geography is an ideal discipline for the individual who is interested in either the cultural or physical environment and who enjoys field work and research as well as travel. Geographers practice their knowledge and skills in a diversity of ways, ranging from researching urban or environmental issues to the use of computers and satellite imagery in designing and creating maps. The purpose of the Department of Geography and Urban Analysis is to provide a program within the physical and social sciences that can provide the necessary understanding and skills that will lead to a satisfying and rewarding career after graduation. Whether studying traditional human-land relationships, elements of the physical environment, or contemporary urban problems, the geographer strives towards understanding the complex interrelationships that are part of both the physical and cultural environments. Interpreting the cultural and physical patterns of the earth requires training in both observational and technical skills. The department offers specialized course work in such areas as cartography, computer cartography, computer applications in geography, geographic information systems (GIS), geomorphology, locational analysis, meteorology and climatology, field methods, map reading, air photo interpretation, and remote sensing. These form part of a degree program that offers both variety and specialization.

At first, "California" meant the peninsula on the west coast of modern Mexico now known as Baja California or Lower California, and the Spaniards believed that they had discovered an enormous island. Only as they ventured further inland did they find that "California" extended north to join the continent, and they named this extension "Alta California," the region that now forms the 31st state of the United States of America. Even in physical terms that state is a region of extremes. It stretches 825 miles from its northwest corner on the 42nd parallel on the Pacific Ocean to its southeast corner on the 32nd parallel at the junction of the Gila and Colorado Rivers. The winding shoreline contains 1,264 miles of beaches and harbors. And elevations run from 14,495 feet at the peak of Mount Whitney to 282 feet below sea level at Death Valley, with both of these landmarks little more than fifty miles apart in Inyo County. California's climates are as varied as her physical regions. There are heavy snows in the high mountain ranges, mild and temperate conditions along the coast, wide variations in temperature and humidity in the valleys, arid conditions and great temperature fluctuations in the desert. The geologic forces that shaped the state's terrain and dictated patterns of climate also created spots of extraordinary beauty like the geysers of Sonoma County and the grandeur of the Yosemite Valley.
