Cambodia's ancient temple city is one of the wonders of the oriental world. Masterpieces of decorative details as well as of architectural style, its awe-inspiring ruins survive as testament to the spectacular achievements of Southeast Asia's greatest civilization. Like Cambodia itself, Angkor has suffered bitter changes of fortune down the centuries, none more so than in our own time. Today, again accessible after long years of civil war, the ruins are once more attracting world attention as a priceless heritage site. At the same time, Angor remains an enduring monument to the people of Cambodia, their past glories, their hopes and aspirations. Click for an article on the "History" of this famous temple site.

The Khmer or Angkor Civilization came into existence during the period from 802 to 1431 A.D. and stretched as far as the modern Thailand-Burma Border in the West and Wat Phou of Laos in the North during its peak. Its emergence lies in the fact that the ancient Khmer rulers adopted a right political doctrine of its time, which enforce the unity among people. Moreover, they had developed an intelligent irrigation system to control the water of the great Mekong River for agricultures, which enhanced its prosperity. The Khmer Civilization had long been perished over 5 centuries ago, but it left outstanding monuments such as the great Khmer temples of Angkor Wat and Bayon and numerous unique sculptures like Apsara. Water Mastery - Khmer Civilization History of Cambodia Influence of Indian Civilization Inscription and Khmer Language Religion Lineage ... Mastery over Water Mastery over Water One of the major success of the Angkor Empire was due to its mastery over the control of water from the Mekong River. Being situated in the tropical Monsoon zone, the Angkor was subjected to a wet season with heavy rainfall during Monsoon and a dry season during the off-Monsoon period. Due to their engineering genius, the ancient Khmer built extensive irrigation and drainage system in order to manage the excessive water from the flood. This water was stored in the huge reservoirs such as the East and West Baray, and irrigated to the farmlands during the dry period. In this way, the Angkor were able to cultivate and harvest rice crops two or three times in one year. Such a high productivity of rice crops in a year helped to strengthen the country's economy significantly, and thus enhanced its prosperity. This enabled the god-king of the Angkor Empire to mobilize large number of laborers and slaves to undergo temples construction, several of which required over ten thousands of laborers and took them from two to three decades to complete. In addition, the Angkor kings were able to recruit manpower to serve in military which play a major role, not only in defending the throne, but in invading the neighbors. The Angkor kingdom expanded its territory vigorously and became a strong regional empire.

Amazing Cambodia My impulsive decision has never worked out so well. When I talked to friends about some exotic place to visit just one day before the Easter Holidays, it seemed that Cambodia was only choice because it was easy for a Chinese national to get a Cambodian tourist visa. The plane ticket to Phnom Penh was expensive, but I really couldn't complain too much for such last minute travel plan. Cambodians seem to have a short collective memory. Perhaps that is the only way a people could cope with the wholesale genocide committed against them by their own compatriots. The usual principle "enemy of enemy is friend" does not apply in Cambodia. Vietnamese are universally hated in Cambodia but many people, especially country folks, voted in the UN-sponsored election for Prime Minister Hun Sen, who was installed by the Vietnamese after they drove out the Khmer Rouge. Khmer Rouge is cursed beyond redemption, but the Chinese and the Thais, both offered military help to the Khmer Rouge, are well liked. Cambodia is destined to rise again to take its respectful place in the world of nations. But for all the glory and sophistication of their ancient civilization, until understood by the Cambodians, the recent dark past warns outsiders that Cambodia may yet make another ugly turn in their extraordinary history.

Internationally, in 1999, I lectured in Thailand, Hawaii, India, Russia, Trinidad, Venezuela and Guyana. The Ancestors were very good to me. It was wonderful set of experiences, and I frequently felt that I was in a kind of dream. All of this travel revolved around researching the African presence globally. All of my lectures were about who African people are, where we are, what we have done, and what we are doing. All along I felt that I was a sort of ambassador possessed of a strong sense of mission and purpose. THE BLACK PRESENCE IN CAMBODIA My last travel experience in 1999 took me to Thailand and Cambodia. In fact, Cambodia was the only country that I traveled to in 1999 where I didn't lecture. I went to Cambodia solely for research. My interest in the Cambodian kingdom of Angkor began in the mid-1970s when I came across John G. Jackson's powerful and informative volume

Beautiful History This book is a wonderful companion on a trip to Angkor Wat, in Cambodia. It makes excellent use of a wide variety of historical anecdotes and images to convey a sense of the feeling of rediscovery of Angkor temples in in the early 20th century.

How can I get a copy of the "Sister Civilizations" poster on your main page?
The Thai Tourism Authority sent it to us. A brief press release about the campaign is here . We have never seen this image on any website or heard much more about the campaign. It may have been created for use only during a German tourist convention in 2000. There was initially a plan to have all the nations in this region pool their tourism advertising, but only Thailand and Cambodia ended up following through . The image is a hint at what could be if the nations in the region could recognize their common heritage and intertwined history. UPDATE: October 17, 2002 - James Bambauer writes: I don't know much about the effort behind it, but I did see the very same poster displayed two weeks ago in the visitor's information office in Hong Kong, so I guess it's still an active campaign. Angkor ceased to be a living city in 1431 when the Khmer abandoned it in face on constant attack from the Thai's. With time the ruins were all but swallowed up by dense jungle. An ancient civilization lost to nature. The popular myth but in fact Angkor was never lost as such, rather it became less and less accessible. It was still known locally as a place of pilgrimage, a vague memory in the minds of European missionaries. It is claimed that the last Kingdom was re-discovered by French naturalist Henri Mouhot in January 1860. Wether or not the Kingdom was ever lost remains a matter for debate but what is not in question is that the posthumous publishing of the accounts of Mouhot's travels did trigger European interest in Asia's single most remarkable archaeological site - The Temples of Angkor. Angkor Wat was built in the 12th century by Suryavarman II is the largest religious building in the world measuring at its base 1,500 metres by 1.300 metre. When one crosses the Naga bridge it appears as if there are just three towers. It is not until one has entered the inner courtyard that the other two are visible. It was originally built for worship to the Hindu gods. To the north stands the Bayon with 54 stone towers, each the face of Bodhisattva on each of the four sides and stands at the centre of Angkor Thom. It is surrounded by a moat and is approached at the four cardinal points through massive stone gates. Ta Prohm to the east of Angkor Thom is particularly fascinating as it is left as it was found with roots of the trees growing up though the masonry of the ancient temples.
