History of Cambodia
The Khmer or Angkor Civilization came into existence during the period from 802 to 1431 A.D. and stretched as far as the modern Thailand-Burma Border in the West and Wat Phou of Laos in the North during its peak. Its emergence lies in the fact that the ancient Khmer rulers adopted a right political doctrine of its time, which enforce the unity among people. Moreover, they had developed an intelligent irrigation system to control the water of the great Mekong River for agricultures, which enhanced its prosperity. The Khmer Civilization had long been perished over 5 centuries ago, but it left outstanding monuments such as the great Khmer temples of Angkor Wat and Bayon and numerous unique sculptures like Apsara. The word " Angkor " is derived Sanskrit, an ancient Indian language, of " Nagara " which means " City ".

Cambodia Just reading the word "Cambodia" is sure to evoke a strong reaction.
Maybe your first thought is of the magnificent ruins of Angkor Wat (and the lesser known, but no less impressive Angkor Thom and the Bayon). Walk amidst the renowned architecture of the 9th-13th centuries and learn about the fascinating history of one of the true wonders of the ancient world.
And if your mind associates Cambodia with its famous traditional dances, we will ensure that you will attend a memorable, intimate dance performance during your stay.
Finally, if you are a student of history, politics or world events, the Cambodia of yesterday still lives on in your mind and heart. That unspeakable era of human suffering under the Khmer Rouge over 20 years ago is commemorated by today's Cambodia at two deeply emotional memorials close to the capital city of Phnom Penh.
Cambodia is all of the above. Today's Cambodia is a complex land - a glorious ancient history, a ghastly recent history, finely skilled artisans, graceful dancers and, most of all, warm, friendly people who teach us all about the triumph of the human spirit.
Cambodia Highlights THE ANGKOR CIVILIZATION While books, films and photographs about Angkor abound, nothing will compare to the wondrous sensations that will flow through you as you enter the ruins of ancient Angkor for the first time.

Haggling Together the countries of Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, and Burma make up one of the most ethnically diverse regions of Southeast Asia. Outside of the cities, little English is spoken in any of these countries except by tour guides and others who have frequent contact with Western visitors. Much of the architecture and art in Cambodia, Laos, and Burma is influenced by Buddhism and includes some of the world's most renowned temples along with exquisitely sculpted Buddha images. The temple complexes of Angkor Wat in Cambodia and Bagan in Burma are among the architectural wonders of the ancient world, while the finest temples in Laos are found in the ancient capital of Luang Prabang. One important point to note: the ethnic minorities, or hill tribes, of northern Vietnam, Laos, Thailand, and Myanmar (Burma) all share a common heritage with each other, originating either from Himalayan tribes or southern Chinese clans. You'll find startling similarities in the customs and languages of all these people.

Earthwatch Archaeologist Explores Cambodia
Cambodia harbors some of the most impressive archaeological sites in the world, including the incomparable monument of Angkor Wat, legacies of the Khmer civilization which dominated the region from 600 to 1450 a.d. But decades of political instability, inflamed by the Khmer Rouge regime of the 1970s, have left many of these sites abused and neglected. Responding to new era of peace in the region, Earthwatch-supported archaeologist Charles Higham was one of the first to explore Cambodia's historic riches.
Higham, a professor of anthropology at the University of Otago, New Zealand, and a Fellow of the British Academy, reported on visiting Cambodia in a recent Discovering Archaeology Online Weekly Newsletter. The article describes the evolution of the ancient Khmer civilization, the history of archaeology in the region, and the result of three visits to Cambodia with colleagues in 1999. The visits were an extension of Higham's excavations in neighboring Thailand, supported by Earthwatch's Origins of Angkor project.
"The highlight of our time in Cambodia was rescuing information at the Iron Age cemetery of Phum Snay, which has been 99 percent destroyed by looters," said Higham. "Phum Snay is a huge cemetery 70 kilometers to the west of Angkor Wat. We plan to work there for another few seasons, but first we need to get a permit from the authorities."

Welcome to Cambodia The magnificent temple ruins found in the country of Cambodia are considered to be one of the ancient wonders of the world. Dating back to around 1200 AD, the amazing architecture, engineering and craftsmanship represented in these structures speak of a civilization that was powerful, wealthy and highly sophisticated, far advanced from many other cultures of that time period. These advancements however, were totally eradicated during the centuries of war that followed. Like the ruins that were left behind, the amazing culture of the ancient Khmer civilization has been lost, abandoned, destroyed. With the rise of the Khmer Rouge In 1975, a man who had taken the name of Pol Pot led the rabble group of Khmer Rouge soldiers into the capitol city of Phnom Penh. Closing the nation off to the rest of the world, Pol Pot immediately began a brutal campaign of killing. Political figures, civil authorities, religious leaders, doctors, and school teachers were the first to be murdered. Eventually, simply having the ability to read was enough to earn a death sentence. All religious institutions were destroyed, currency was banned, and most modern technologies were abandoned. Families were separated and forced to work long days in the rice fields with very little to eat. It is estimated that during the next three years over one million people were murdered and an additional two million starved to death in the work camps.

    Khmer's Spectacular Monuments
War's End Reopens a Chain of Royal Temples
By Thomas Crampton International Herald Tribune PREAH VIHEAR, Cambodia - The surrender of Cambodia's Khmer Rouge guerrillas just a few months ago yielded a little publicized peace dividend to pilgrims and tourists: the reopening of a spectacular monument built by the ancient civilization most famed for constructing Angkor Wat. Preah Vihear, an extraordinary kilometer of elaborately carved sandstone temples, runs uphill to a cliff overlooking the northern jungle plains of Cambodia. Within Cambodian territory but accessible only from Thailand, the temple complex is the crowning jewel in a set of monuments that now make northeast Thailand an option for tourists seeking Khmer culture without the worries and dangers of violence-swept modern Cambodia. For much of the last 30 years, war has kept the temples along the Thai-Cambodian border off-limits to ordinary visitors. Since Preah Vihear reopened in August, Thai monks and tourists have flocked to the mountain each weekend by the thousands - along with a handful of foreigners.

After the genocide tragedy, the country began to awaken to international tourism. The extermination committed by the notorious Khmer Rouge had slowed down both the civil and social growth of the nation. Despite that, the Khmer heritage was not wiped out and every corner of Phnom Phen shows particular features that highlight those noble origins. To the astonished tourist the magnificence of this ancient civilization is widely shown at “Angkor Wat" with its majestic presence, one of the worlds great wonders, that the surrounding jungle has still preserved from those prior historical events. "Angkor Wat" is not the only testimony of past civilization; other similar temples are scattered all over the Siem Reap Valley. Many words cannot describe the beauty of the sunset, which can be seen from the Elephant Terrace.

Covering an area of 180,000 sq km and with a population of 9 million, Cambodia is bordered by Thailand to the west, Laos to the north, Vietnam to the east and the Gulf of Thailand to the southwest. Topographically, the country comprises a large flood plain ringed by forested mountains in the border areas, with the Mekong flowing north to south, providing a transportation route and bringing vital flood waters to the Tonle Sap, Southeast Asia's largest fresh water lake. From the 9th to the 15th centuries Cambodia formed the heart of the Khmer Empire, centred on Angkor and extending over much of present-day Thailand, Laos and Vietnam. In the modern period, Cambodia became embroiled in the Indochinese conflict and was devastated by civil war during the 1970s and 80s, although today it is on the road to recovery as a constitutional monarchy. The capital, Phnom Penh, can be reached in little more than one hour by direct flights from Bangkok.

find coastlines of Antarctica shown which could not have been known to their makers. Childress' many works chronicle the inexplicable sites around the world. Something was definitely up.
For centuries, people had whispered about "Atlantis" and "Mu." Colin Wilson rehearses many of these themes and their modern counterparts in From Atlantis to the Sphinx Speculation had often arisen over the seeming similarities of many ancient world cultures and artifacts. A unified theory began to emerge which would explain and unify all of these findings and phenomena. The theory speaks of a lost, antediluvian Civilization whose heirs we all are.
Not that this is new. Many mystical and metaphysical groups, notably the Rosicrucian Order AMORC , have taught that we have inherited the knowledge of "Atlantis," no matter how confused or diluted in the popular consciousness . But the wisdom that these groups had preserved for the many centuries is now finally being validated by modern science, it would seem!
Graham Hancock
, a British Journalist, together with a number of colleagues from disparate fields, began to pull the threads of the story together. Today, Hancock, West, Bauval (see bibliography that follows) and others are challenging the Archaeological and Historical establishment with a consistent theory which fits the observed phenomena well. The basic lineaments of the theory (as I understand it), are as follows:
